owlishintergalactic:

This is an anthology of original stories written by fanfic writers. One of them is my own. For so long, fanfic writers have been discouraged from sharing their links to fandom in the original stories world and from disclosing they write fic to the publishing industry. Fic writers have been told many things. We’re told we are inferior writers. We’re told fic isn’t real writing, but practice for originals and, simultaneously, that our originals will never fly because we cling to our beloved tropes and the conventions of our genre.

I took these things to heart, for a long time, even as I knew there was an audience out there for the kinds of stories I wrote. Folks who would love the slower, more character driven adventures I wrote with fluff scenes interspersed throughout the action. Who consumed character studies and emotional prose as if they were as necessary to life as food and water. Who were desperate for the sort of inclusiveness in origfic that fanfic has always had. The same inclusivity the publishing industry has barely begun to tap into.

So many of my fandom friends can point to a 200k word story they swear is better than any published novel and that it would suffer greatly from being forced into the 100k word or less box Big 6 publishers insist on to reduce risk.

It can seem impossible to get your name and your words in print when you want to tell yourstories, not those of the publishing industry, and you don’t want to stop writing fic, much less renounce it. Self publishing, too, can seem like an insurmountable mountain of work and self-promo.

I could sit here and talk about indie presses and niche zines and how they are, for the most part, a friendlier place for fanfic writers, but I mostly want to get the word out that there are two (that I know of) who specifically only take on fanfic writers and have built platforms around supporting those of us who want to be published: Duck Prints Press (@duckprintspress) and OFIC Mag (@oficmag).

In the interest of full disclosure, I am both published with Duck Prints Press and became a part of the editorial staff after my story and contract were finalized for printing. I don’t speak now as a staff member, but the author I am. I don’t ever want to hoard opportunities, because we all benefit when there are more stories out there for us to read. I’ve got no affiliation with OFIC Magazine and haven’t submitted a story to them (yet), but they appeared on my wall and inspired this post.

I truly, deeply, down into my very core, believe in the missions of these companies and want to see them succeed (it’s why I accepted a staff position in the first place). Publishing needs diversity; not just in authors and characters, but also in style and structure. It needs new stories. Fresh stories. The kinds millions of fandom folk already love to read. We don’t need to grow out of our tropes or write something to Market with a capitol ’M’. It’s not the only market, and it excludes so many people and so many beautiful, impactful stories.

And I am glad there are people willing to put in the time and effort to publish books, anthologies, and publications to showcase all of these amazing tales of adventure, sorrow, intimacy, fluff, and love.

If you’re looking for paid opportunities to write the kind of stories you love, please check out https://www.oficmag.com/and https://duckprintspress.com/for upcoming opportunities. As I learn of more fic-writer-friendly publishers and zines, I will try to share them here as well as my fic-friendly general writing advice and answers to Asks on writing, making the transition from fic writer to origfic writer, and how my birds/guinea pigs/child/wife are doing.

And, if you aren’t interested, pass these opportunities along and keep on writing and reading. You’re all amazing.

So,the previous inbox got me thinking and I decided to write this, which will serve as a little about us, an introduction (long overdue) for those of you curious followers who wants to get to know us better. I also posted a little text I wrote in early january.

My little Pet and I haven’t always been Master and Pet. We were just boyfriend & girlfriend a few years ago. A couple who loved each other a lot… Pretty vanilla eh?… Well, here is the twist: We were also a couple of horny teenagers who were rough in bed, fuck a lot and were into S&M sex. So you can figure out this was just matter of time. After spending some time appart we are back together, more mature and in a new kind of relationship. So this isn’t really getting back together, but a new beginning.

We are now Master&Pet, and have been like this for over 5 months now. Though we are fairly new on this life style, we are walking this new path together, growing and learning and even getting to know us again. Things that we didn’t even knew about each other or even ourselves, things that we were too shy to tell, new things that have been forged in our personalities with the passing of the years, adjusting and fitting to our new roles and kind of relationship, and a lot of great things that we are discovering and exploring in this bdsm world.

Having been on both kinds of relationships together, and loving each other in both cases; we’ve found that the D/s bond it’s so much more meaningful, deeper and stronger. As well as kinkier, sexier and fucking awesome, of course. It’s a whole new level of bond, both physically and mentally speaking.

So, this is it, this is us. And there is no other way for us now.

We’ve got a big week this week for the Ling Space! Today, we’ve got a collaboration episode we did with the fantastic history channel The Origin of Everything and the fascinating music theory channel 12tone. It’s on the history of God Save the Queen and My Country ‘Tis of Thee and anthems; we talk about song translations and how they work. We’re really excited to share it!

Then tomorrow, we’ll be posting our new video on the semantics of conditionals. If you’ve been wanting to understand how we deal with what-ifs, then this is the video for you! Tomorrow afternoon - we’re looking forward to it. ^_^

We’ve been nominated for Bab.la’s Top Language Lovers in the YouTube Channel category for the 3rd year in a row! Thanks so much to all of you for your support, it really means a lot to us. If you’d like to vote for us, click here to head over to their page.

We’ve been pretty quiet lately, and we took this week off to work on something big that we’ll be telling you about soon. But we’ll be back next week with a regular episode for you all on Wednesday, and we’re looking forward to getting back to talking about linguistics with you all. ^_^

Everyone:

Absolutely everyone:

Us: SO WE’RE CHANGING OUR NAME!

We’re excited to say that from here on out, we’re going to be known as Wickling Comics!
Instagram:@wicklingcomics
Twitter: @wicklingcomics

Idiot Boyfriends will always have a special place in our hearts. That place looks a lot like somewhere in Latveria where Billy makes bad decisions and Teddy is threatening to maim Pietro.

Still, we’ve decided an ship name that’s an inside joke based on a couple of comic panels might not best exactly clear for people trying to find us.

Plus they’re married now so it doesn’t even really work anymore.

ANYWAY. That’s it for now.

Thanks for following along! We can’t wait to bring you more home-brewed Wickling content.

Your #IdiotBoyfriends,

- Baz & RJ

I think I speak for both Kitty and myself when I say this is quite unexpected. We started this blog a week ago, and we’re already past 100 followers! I really thank all of you guys, and hope you keep enjoying the content we post. Thanks for everything, and we’ll keep it up on our end for you ;) ~Sixxth

Folks with this whole “you’re old once you hit 25” mentality are just buying into a repackaged “you need to have your life figured out by 18 and if you’re not successful by 22 you’re a failure” load of shit. Like….bruh, life doesn’t end at 25. Idk how to tell you that the time limit you’re silently imposing on yourself and your peers is largely responsible for your dissatisfaction with your life. Stop living your life like happiness has an expiration date. It doesn’t.

I think media has a lot to do with this.

I was explaining to my husband a while back that I thought I was a complete failure by the time 8 was 25 because I didn’t have a new car, a house of my own, and a career. And he was AGHAST at the fact that I thought that. He asked what made me think that and I explained that growing up watching movies and television and reading books that had protagonists that were in their middle twenties and super successful made me think that I was supposed to be the same way and the fact that I wasn’t (even though I left home at 19 years old with a 1.5 year old baby and nothing but my car, the clothes on our backs and ten dollars and therefore didn’t have any kind of chance of having a good start) meant that I’d failed my son and myself.

It seriously wasn’t until I was 29 and pregnant with my youngest son that I realized I wasn’t the only person my age who didn’t have my shit together. By the time I made it to 35 I started to feel like I knew what I was doing and even though I’m almost 40 I still occasionally have realizations that make me sad that I put expectations on myself that are still unrealistic.

What I know now is that failure is a good thing. To fail means you tried and you’ve learned something. Failure is a stepping stone to success. I’d rather fail at something then have it handed to me, because to fail means I worked for it, grew through it, and I earned it.

Society as a whole knows nothing about what an individual is capable of. Don’t let society define who YOU are, what makes you happy, what makes you successful, what makes you feel whole.
