I’ve officially taken over the blog from Ed this week to go over a lot of Afterbirth+ and some Afterbirth, too.


Covering the most important part of Afterbirth+, I want to reiterate it’s the definitive version of Isaac. It’s not just mods, the new items, enemies, bosses and ending conclude this chapter of Isaac. Oh yeah, and achievements, too.


NEW ITEMS! (all of these items were mods the team made and ed approved as official in game items)


Little Horn

Effects: Damage on collision (*.*), *% of special tear (scales with luck up to **%) that kills instantly any non boss enemy.


Poke N’ Go

Effects: On first room visit that has enemies it has a **% chance of spawning a friendly enemy + 


Brown Nugget

Effects: Rechargable item. Spawns a fly turret (select’s an enemy in radius and shoots at it once per ** frames (* secs) with a tear of collision damage *.0f (Isaac base damage *.*)


New boss tease

At least two of the new bosses from Afterbirth will be receiving evolved versions. These aren’t palette swaps or additional attacks on an existing boss, but all-new designs with new art and behaviors. Ed won’t let me spoil them too much, but you may have already seen this:

Console version(s)

We’re still planning on following up the PC version with the console versions. For now we can confirm PS4 and Xbox One. The wait will be less than it was with Afterbirth, but will not be simultaneous with PC.

iOS version

TL;DR It’s coming to iOS VERY SOON!!!The game has been approved by Apple and we’re working on getting all the features we want into the game. Obligatory bulletpoint list: - It’s a universal binary so you buy it once for iPhone, you can download for free on iPad (and eventually Apple TV–eventually, we don’t have timing on the Apple TV version)- iCloud save support for uploading/downloading save data between those devices- Bluetooth controller support


PS Vita version

We still haven’t given up on this one, but it’s a VERY low priority. The optimization involved for acceptable performance is a big deal. The little Vita doesn’t like crazy weapon combos.

So Ed and I have been working on a A LOT of amazing stuff. First, we’re going to be launching a N—— <edmund> wtf, there is no way im going to let all this info get out in one post… ill finish his sentence in a future post. </edmund>

today i asked fans what they wanted to see in this weeks post and it was a pretty close between telling you what Void does and showing a new item.. so ill do both!

Void is the starting item for afterbirth+’s new character Apollyon and an item i designed because ive always wanted an item like this.

Apollyon is the destroyer so i felt it most appropriate that his item convey destruction as well as his army of locusts.

Void - usable item - charge 4

on use void destroys all items in the room, if an item is a usable item void now gains that items ability when used ( this stacks ), if the item is a non usable item it gives the player a random stat bonus.

void will also destroy all pickups in the room as well and turn them into a small army of locust ( blue flys ).

pretty neato huh? after designing void i got in this destruction and stacking effect kick and designed this little thanger.

Smelter - usable item - charge 6

on use smelter destroys all trinkets you are carrying permanently applying their effects to your character.

i like this one a lot, same idea as void but can make for some really interesting bonus effects in longer games. 

this will be a store item btw.

its been 2 weeks and im still digging through your over 5k item suggestions (who am i kidding im only looking at the top 200, so kill me!). i have quite a few that i think are pretty interesting, mostly trinket item ideas but still good none the less.

so i took a vacation from isaac and reddit for a while (aside from AB+ testing) but i took a gander and it seems like a lot of you think Afterbirth+ is just going to be some dev tools for you to play with… well… YOU, ARE, WRONG!

our goal with AB+ was to do a mini dlc + dev tools for you to continue the isaac legacy, beause this is the end of the line folks! here is a rough list of features we are currently working on.

AFTERBIRTH + FEATURES LIST!

-55+ new items (yes im counting trinkets as items you sons a bitches, always have always will!)

-new final chapter, boss and ending (yes i said chapter, not area)

-new playable character 

-greed hard mode

-daily greed runs

-5 new challenges 

-loads of new achievements 

-a few new bosses and other little editions 

PLUS DEV TOOLS! so you can design, edit and play and endless number of mods, features and whole new games that the community will no doubt eventually design.. but ill let tyrone go into more detail on that at a later date.

we have no set release date but the goal is before the end of the year.

other isaac related updates (by Tyrone!):

-Confirmed consoles are: PlayStation 4, Wii U and Xbox One. We’re about three weeks from launching and will have an official announcement VERY soon. Wii U may not release at the same exact date, but will be very shortly behind PS4 and Xbox One

-AB+ WILL come to consoles. More specifically, expect it on PlayStation 4 and Xbox one. It UNLIKELY to release simultaneously with the PC version. The console version will NOT have mod support as most of what we’re doing for mod support will likely not pass certification requirements.

-iOS Isaac: We haven’t given up. I’d like to think Apple would embrace a game like Isaac on iOS, but the final outcome is still TBD

Bumbo update!

you guys seem to want more info on this game, so here is a bit more detailed info.

Bumbo is a difficult game to compare to other games but i think the best would be to call it a cross between puzzle quest and isaac mixed a bit with magic the gathering. its probably good to get that basic description set in stone before we go to far into teasing and too many of you think we are doing some wacky JRPG type paper mario game.

it a randomly generated, puzzle based, turn based, combat driven ball of chaos and poo! and its coming together quite nicely..

its that time again!

as many of you know afterbirth+ has been in dev for a few month mostly focused on the mod tools, but we have recently started on new content and as the weeks go by im going to once again try to do a few focused posts that revolve around fan feedback like i did back in the day with afterbirth.
this week is item week!

there are currently over 55 new items i  afterbirth+ but i want at least 10 fan designed ones to be added before release, so here are the rules.
i started a reddit thread here, to submit your item item youll need to post it there.

-Only post one item per comment!

-Focus your attention on what the item does, not what it looks like!

-Try and keep your item unique, dont just say brimstone but purple and homing!

im looking for really out of the box shit this time and dont worry, even if your item is simple and unfocused but still fun/unique if it makes the cut ill tune and design it in a way that makes it work.

Bumbo update!

Bumbo is unfolding quite well, i hope to be doing more full updates on it in the coming months once we have an official teaser video floating around. but till then i can only tease this beta partial screen cap to lube things up a bit.

also a few seem confused by the RPG aspect of the game that i mentioned in my last update, i kinda consider isaac to be an RPG so a better description would probably be “randomly generated turn based puzzle strategy”. “poop based punching sim” also works…

It’s me Tyrone (@tyronerodriguez) and I’m still not Ed. 

We’ve been busy resting, getting ready for more Afterbirth+ work but have made some progress through the holiday. I want to go over some frequently asked questions in today’s post. 

I’ve heard about Afterbirth+, will it be free?

It will not be free, it will be a paid DLC and will require Rebirth and Afterbirth to purchase.

Why isn’t it free?!?

Because it’s another expansion, just like Afterbirth and will complete the Rebirth ********* and ********* ***. As far as gameplay, we’re adding (and this is still Tyrone, but ** might ****** the following) a bunch of new ***** items, over ** **** enemies, rad bosses, redesigned ***** mod ******* and a few ***** surprises. That’s a big part of the D**.


Why are we paying for mod support?

Technically, you’re not. Remember, this is an expansion just like Afterbirth. Trust me, it’ll be worth it, you’ll love it and if you don’t, blame Northerlion.


I keep seeing your tweets mentioning Lua. Who is she?

Actually, Lua isn’t a girl, Lua is a lightweight multi-paradigm programming language. But I just ripped that from wikipedia. Go there if you want to learn more.

That Matthias Bossi guy has one sexy voice, but I’d really like my own voice packs. Will Afterbirth+ allow this?

Yes! You’ll be able to swap out all those lovely voice over effects with your own version of Balls of Steel!


What platforms will it be available?

This one is tricky! The DLC/expansion will be available on Windows, OSX and Linux. It’ll probably also be available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. BUUUUUUUUT the mod support tools will only be for Windows. 


Will platforms other than Windows be able to play the mods?

We’re pretty sure that it’s not an issue for OSX and Linux, but we need to do more research on what it would take for packaged mods and changes to be accessible on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Keep in mind that mod support for the consoles might be entirely out of our control. 

When is it coming out?

2016, that’s this year!

Other news for console players who want Afterbirth. We should be done with porting both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version by the end of next month. Release would be shortly after that. For any other consoles, I can’t promise you anything, but XO and PS4 are between Q1 and Q2 this year.

Hopefully by now you’ve had a chance to play this weekend’s big update with a lot of good changes to Afterbirth. If you haven’t, go do that now and come back.

OK, welcome back.
We’re going to talk about the new mini DLC that Ed, I and the team at Nicalis are working on for next year. Tentatively called Afterbirth † , it’s a great name that represents what we’re doing on this new DLC. 


<evil edmund>Afterbirth † will have a bunch of new ***** ********, including a couple of new bosses, a few transformations and new items/trinkets. How many? That’s a ****** you’ll find out on *******. Oh, also, ***** ***** **** and maybe something else related to ***** ****. There’s also a *** ****** I’m leaving out until a later time so you can wonder and conjecture/speculate ***** ****.</evil edmund>

Aside from that we’ll also include the Bestiary, which will show a lot of detail related to the enemies you encounter in the game–but not the ones you haven’t seen yet. It’s a fun way to give you more insight into your overall progress

The big news, and I’ve mentioned this in passing on my twitter feed and some interviews, is the massive game modification support. I’ve been somewhat quiet about mod support in the past and that hasn’t been because I don’t want to do it–it’s been because I want to do it RIGHT. 


The tl;dr version–imagine having access to game API, so you can add and modify the game and do things not possible without .exe modding–in a much simpler way.


Afterbirth † will include a player/user-friendlier Room Editor, Animation Editor and Lua support. You’ll also be able to edit the item pools.

Room Editor: The Room Editor, will allow you to design your own rooms without hacking the game. This includes rocks, blocks, TNT, holes, chests, enemies and just about everything else Ed has access to.

Animation Editor: the Animation Editor it’s just exactly what it sounds like, you’ll be able to externally create your own new art, nightmares etc, then import those files into the animation editor to bring it to life and appear in the game. hashtag=fun

Lua Support: This might be the single biggest thing that will really allow you to go crazy in terms of modifying the game. With full Lua support you can create new enemies, items and effects and make a whole new Isaac or–hell, even an entirely new game that ISN’T Isaac.

one of them is actually an older design of mine that i had been planning on doing before our shop died (RIP!). the actual illustration was done by Tikara (she made all the isaac tarot cards) and a shirt ill personally be wearing a lot. i feel like the image sums up the themes/story of isaac better than any written description. 


and finally.. time to spoil the final weekly feature… Daily Specials.

daily specials are specifically themed daily runs that revolve around special days of the year. these runs can range from visual changes, to specific load outs, or even more challenge themed runs.

dev for afterbirth has been pretty inspiring, the nicalis team has really done an amazing job breathing a huge amount of life back into this freak of a game and i cant be more proud of our work together, once again they have made something that i would for sure buy and play for ages.. and thats not an easy feat by any means. 

you guys are really gunna love all the new little details and additions.. there is so much new stuff i keep forgetting what stuff does.. even though i designed it :|.

so full disclosure, i slept with a night light till i was 11. 

i had a horrible fear of aliens… i didnt think the light would keep them away but if it was dark then they may have basically always been there in the room with me. 

i was convinced that they could read my mind and knew when i was scared so would take the opportunity to pin point the exact moment that would be the most earth shattering and just appear somewhere with me in my dark room.

i got over my fear that year when i finally had enough of being scared and told them (telepathically) that if they really existed then this was the night i was going to be abducted and to just get it over, and that was that.

the night light was an item Tyrone almost teased once in a stream and one people keep asking about. its a fantastic item (pretty op imo) and here is it in action.

no longer may you fear the dark!

its hard, its weird, its personal, its has amazing controls, its a totally new unannounced IP and its easily one of the largest games ive ever made level wise.

Challenges!!!! i really wanna add fan challenges with achievements and unlockable items in the next boosters, ideally id like at least one each time.. but ill take what i can get.

challenges should do something totally new, they should challenge the player and force them to play the game differently than normal, dont just put a few items on the player, we have more than enough of those.

Enemies / Bosses!!!! just try to stay on theme and ill do what i can to balance and add them in.

Angel Room items!!!! i know people have issue with the angel rooms and i have a few ideas on how to push them up a tad…but id like some new items to throw in there as well, thats where you come in…

im also up for whatever oddball ideas you guys have, ive seen some impressive stuff out there, so please continue!

I’ve taken over duties with today’s megapost, which was supposed to go live last week #sorry. We were busy updating the PC version and announcing the Nintendo Switch retail version of The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+. Oh yeah, we also released Rebirth on iOS. It was a busy week.


AFTERBIRTH+ STATUS REPORT
If you’ve played Afterbirth+, you’ve probably seen the regular patches, bug fixes and tweaks since launch. BOOSTER PACKS
We’re still committed to providing updates as long as there’s new content created by the community. You’ve already been busy making really great items, weapons and mods for the game. We’ll will have an official method of submissions and accepting mods into monthly updates. Keep doing what you’ve been doing. Personally, I’d love to put in @ThatScayze’sPac-Man Mod, as a random bonus room.


API/MOD SUPPORT
When we started working on mod support and opening up the game to all of you, I was very hopeful that you’d make amazing things. As I mentioned previously, tomorrow will be two weeks since launch and you’ve already impressed the entire team with what you’ve created in such a short amount of time. I can’t imagine what you will be making a year from now.

Like the main portion of AB+, we’re still fixing bugs, updating the API and making improvements that will allow you to make more changes to the game. What you see now isn’t the final version of the mod tools, but just the beginning. If you do have feature requests, also send them to [email protected] with subject: Mod Tools Suggestion


Later this week/early next week we plan to do a quick Mod Tools Tutorial stream online with a few of the Afterbirth+ team members to help you get a better understanding on how to get started modding. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is available on iOS as a universal binary. We’ll have AppleTV support at a later time, but right now it’s touch- and MFI-compatible. Requires iOS10, runs at 60fps xoxo

NINTENDO SWITCH
By now you’ve hopefully heard that The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ is coming to Nintendo Switch in retail form. What does it mean?

It means that there is more than just The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on launch. Afterbirth+ will be available at retail as well as on the Nintendo eShop for $39.99 and will include Rebirth, Afterbirth and Afterbirth+ packed together as one game.

If you’re that excited about the game, it’s still available to pre-order at GameStop and Amazon. You might want to consider pre-ordering as the first few thousand copies may come backed in with something special

AFTERBIRTH+ STATUS REPORT
If you’ve played Afterbirth+, you’ve probably seen the regular patches, bug fixes and tweaks since launch. It’s been just over two weeks since launch and we’re still working away at making sure the game is perfect, as-balanced-as-possible and as bug-free as possible. Afterbirth+ will close the book on a 5 year journey that started out as a 3 month flash project i made with a friend (florian himsl) for fun. we had no real intentions to sell it, it was originally going to just be a sponsored flash game due to the fact i was worried people wouldn’t be that into it, and we only spent a few months on it. 

i never had any idea Isaac would become what it has, this little monster has consumed my brain for what feels like a lifetime and im at a point now where i can be happy with officially finishing the story and calling the Isaac project done. 

but as sad as that may sound to some, this is really just the start of things to come. AB+ started as just a mini DLC of mod tools, but slowly ballooned into another game expansion with a bunch more added content… but still at its core the whole point of AB+ was to hand the game off to the community, who at this point knows the game better than i do.

this new year will be a changing of the guard so to speak, we will be giving over Isaac future to the fans and supporting the mod community as much as possible.

this year will be a year of the monthly “Booster pack”!

as you may have assumed, using mods wont allow for you to unlock new game content / get achievements. but we have come up with a way to bring the best mod content officially into the game via mini monthly updates to AB+ or “booster packs”.

(ill probably also join in the fun a little.. honestly i came up with a few neat item ideas during the last week of crunch that i need to see in game.. so maybe this whole “letting go” thing is a lie!)

so all you out there will get to experience a year of free user made content officially added, and all you modders will get a chance brag to the internet about your amazing design skills and unlock the biggest and most sought after achievement in Isaac to date, the “MY WORK IS OFFICIALLY IN ISAAC” achievement!


SO YOU WANT YOUR MOD OFFICIALLY IN THE GAME!?

so when making mods you can honestly do whatever the hell you wanna do, so dont let this post sway you from making a totally nutty mod with guns and Jesus and copy-written material that will put you in jail! but the following is a list of basic guidelines when it comes to content im looking for to be added in this years monthly “booster packs”.


Items-

theme tips: 

this can be a difficult one due to the fact that most of the items in Isaac are based on personal items/themes from my own childhood but the best way to stay on theme when it comes to items visual design is to stick with these simple and effective Isaac tropes.

-gross items (bodily functions / liquids / solids / wounds)

-christian items (artifacts / rituals / etc)

-pagan / satanic / occultic items (artifacts / rituals / etc)

and the minor Isaac themes like fetal development, disease, dnd and general 80s nerd bullshit.


design tips:

Isaac has a few hard archetypes when it comes to items, its best to design around these specific groups.

-HP driven items: (items that use life as resource / contact damage stuff / items that like it when you take damage)

-Defensive items: (items that protect you / raise your hp / reduce damage)

-Tear mods: (items that change your tear behavior / add status effects)

-Resource based items: (items that effects pickups / generate things / use your resources in different ways / affecting shops)

-High risk reward items: (stuff like bobs brain / curse of the tower / cursed eye) (people may not like them but items like these are important too!)

-Mod items: (items that affect usable items / familiars / angel,devil rooms / shops / etc)

-Trinkets: (items that passively mod behind the scenes %s, effects and support a range of archetypes)  

-Wild cards: (items that dont fit into an archetype but do interesting things none the less)


Enemies/Bosses-

im specifically looking for enemies that will be added as alts to existing ones. this makes them a lot easier to add so we dont need to include 100+ rooms specifically for each of them. they dont need to be like the enemy they are an alt of, but should roughly fit the theme/difficulty of said enemy you are making an alt for.


theme tips:

most of you should know these themes by now.

-most enemies should resemble Isaac in some minor way

-stick to Edmunds 6 Ds of Isaac visual enemy design: decaying, demonic, dead, dying, diseased and decapitated!

- again minor themes of fetal development, insects (decomposers) and body horror in general are always accepted!

Challenges-

it would be great to add a new challenge every month this year.. but they gotta be good! 

challenges should force the place to finish the game in a unique / interesting / challenging way that you aren’t usually used to. theme doesn’t matter as much on these, as long as the design is fun or new id be more than happy to add as many as we can over the year.  


Misc- 

im sure there are things out there we somehow missed that we can officially support. out of the box stuff, whatever works as long as it fits the theme and is a solid design im more than happy to consider it.


the best way for me to see your designs is to simply tweet me a gif or video of your mod in action, be specific though dont send me like 20 items or 15 enemies, just send me one of each that you feel is the best, then wait a month to send more. 

thereddit page is also a great place to showcase your mods as well as get feedback and maybe even sync up with an artist or programmer you can partner with (romance?).

anyway i hope this was helpful, its a bit hamfisted but as the months roll by im sure we will find a smooth way to exchange ideas and ill keep updating the blog with new info as the year unfolds.

Expect Afterbirth+ on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and one more console. Sorry no PS Vita or Wii U versions. Date? Spring 2017–we’re already working on the console versions. - Mod support? We’re still investigating a good method to deliver mods. It WILL NOT have built-in mod support as the tools we’ve created have some very specific requirements

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth iOS!

In case you missed the previous update on it (and you’re too lazy to scroll down), here’s what you can expect in the iOS version: - Universal binary (buy it once, and download for free on iPad or vice verse)- iCloud save support, upload and download your save data between devices- MFi controller support–Apple’s licensed bluetooth iOS standard (also compatible with Apple TV- Landscape and portrait orientations- A bunch of other little features to make the iOS experience good. We’re in the final phase of beta testing. I’ll be opening up beta testing to a lot more people and not just David Parkour.

A little bummed that I made them as apng initially, but Tumblr doesn’t seem to support it. :( I’ll be putting them all on Sketchfab when all 12 are done.
