Now Aragorn knelt beside Faramir, and held a hand upon his brow. And those that watched felt that some great struggle was going on. For Aragorn’s face grew grey with weariness; and ever and anon he called the name of Faramir, but each time more faintly to their hearing, as if Aragorn himself was removed from them, and walked afar in some dark vale, calling for one that was lost.

And at last Bergil came running in, and he bore six leaves in a cloth. ‘It is kingsfoil, Sir,’ he said; 'but not fresh, I fear. It must have been culled two weeks ago at the least. I hope it will serve, Sir?’ Then looking at Faramir he burst into tears.

But Aragorn smiled. 'It will serve,’ he said. 'The worst is now over. Stay and be comforted!’ Then taking two leaves, he laid them on his hands and breathed on them, and then he crushed them, and straightway a living freshness filled the room, as if the air itself awoke and tingled, sparkling with joy. And then he cast the leaves into the bowls of steaming water that were brought to him, and at once all hearts were lightened. For the fragrance that came to each was like a memory of dewy mornings of unshadowed sun in some land of which the fair world in Spring is itself but a fleeting memory. But Aragorn stood up as one refreshed, and his eyes smiled as he held a bowl before Faramir’s dreaming face.

'Well now! Who would have believed it?’ said Ioreth to a woman that stood beside her. 'The weed is better than I thought. It reminds me of the roses of Imloth Melui when I was a lass, and no king could ask for better.’

Suddenly Faramir stirred, and he opened his eyes, and he looked on Aragorn who bent over him; and a light of knowledge and love was kindled in his eyes, and he spoke softly. 'My lord, you called me. I come. What does the king command?’

'Walk no more in the shadows, but awake!’ said Aragorn. 'You are weary. Rest a while, and take food, and be ready when I return.’

'I will, lord,’ said Faramir. 'For who would lie idle when the king has returned?’

Sam was not daunted, and he still eyed Strider dubiously. ‘How do we know you are the Strider

Sam was not daunted, and he still eyed Strider dubiously. ‘How do we know you are the Strider that Gandalf speaks about?’ he demanded. 'You never mentioned Gandalf, till this letter came out. You might be a play-acting spy, for all I can see, trying to get us to go with you. You might have done in the real Strider and took his clothes. What have you to say to that?’

'That you are a stout fellow,’ answered Strider; 'but I am afraid my only answer to you, Sam Gamgee, is this. If I had killed the real Strider, I could kill you. And I should have killed you already without so much talk. If I was after the Ring, I could have it - NOW!’

He stood up, and seemed suddenly to grow taller. In his eyes gleamed a light, keen and commanding. Throwing back his cloak, he laid his hand on the hilt of a sword that had hung concealed by his side. They did not dare to move. Sam sat wide-mouthed staring at him dumbly.

'But I am the real Strider, fortunately,’ he said, looking down at them with his face softened by a sudden smile. 'I am Aragorn son of Arathorn; and if by life or death I can save you, I will.’

There was a long silence. At last Frodo spoke with hesitation. 'I believed that you were a friend before the letter came,’ he said, 'or at least I wished to. You have frightened me several times tonight, but never in the way that servants of the Enemy would, or so I imagine. I think one of his spies would - well, seem fairer and feel fouler, if you understand.’

'I see,’ laughed Strider. 'I look foul and feel fair. Is that it? All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost.’

'Did the verses apply to you then?’ asked Frodo. 'I could not make out what they were about. But how did you know that they were in Gandalf’s letter, if you have never seen it?’

'I did not know,’ he answered. 'But I am Aragorn, and those verses go with that name.’

Turning back they saw across the River the far hills kindled. Day leaped into the sky. The red rim of the sun rose over the shoulders of the dark land. Before them in the West the world lay still, formless and grey; but even as they looked, the shadows of night melted, the colours of the waking earth returned: green flowed over the wide meads of Rohan; the white mists shimmered in the watervales; and far off to the left, thirty leagues or more, blue and purple stood the White Mountains, rising into peaks of jet, tipped with glimmering snows, flushed with the rose of morning.

‘Gondor! Gondor!’ cried Aragorn. 'Would that I looked on you again in happier hour! Not yet does my road lie southward to your bright streams.

Gondor! Gondor, between the Mountains and the Sea!
West Wind blew there; the light upon the Silver Tree
Fell like bright rain in gardens of the Kings of old.
O proud walls! White towers! O winged crown and throne of gold!
O Gondor, Gondor! Shall Men behold the Silver Tree,
Or West Wind blow again between the Mountains and the Sea?

In the days that followed his crowning the King sat on his throne in the Hall of the Kings and pronounced his judgements. And embassies came from many lands and peoples, from the East and the South, and from the borders of Mirkwood, and from Dunland in the west. And the King pardoned the Easterlings that had given themselves up, and sent them away free, and he made peace with the peoples of Harad; and the slaves of Mordor he released and gave to them all the lands about Lake Núrnen to be their own. And there were brought before him many to receive his praise and reward for their valour; and last the captain of the Guard brought to him Beregond to be judged.

And the King said to Beregond: ‘Beregond, by your sword blood was spilled in the Hallows, where that is forbidden. Also you left your post without leave of Lord or of Captain. For these things, of old, death was the penalty. Now therefore I must pronounce your doom.

'All penalty is remitted for your valour in battle, and still more because all that you did was for the love of the Lord Faramir. Nonetheless you must leave the Guard of the Citadel, and you must go forth from the City of Minas Tirith.’

Then the blood left Beregond’s face, and he was stricken to the heart and bowed his head. But the King said.:

'So it must be, for you are appointed to the White Company, the Guard of Faramir, Prince of Ithilien, and you shall be its captain and dwell in Emyn Arnen in honour and peace, and in the service of him for whom you risked all, to save him from death.’

And then Beregond, perceiving the mercy and justice of the King, was glad, and kneeling kissed his hand, and departed in joy and content. And Aragorn gave to Faramir Ithilien to be his princedom, and bade him dwell in the hills of Emyn Arnen within sight of the City.

The next day at the hour of sunset Aragorn walked alone in the woods, and his heart was high within

The next day at the hour of sunset Aragorn walked alone in the woods, and his heart was high within him; and he sang, for he was full of hope and the world was fair. And suddenly even as he sang he saw a maiden walking on a greensward among the white stems of the birches; and he halted amazed, thinking that he had strayed into a dream, or else that he had received the gift of the Elf-minstrels, who can make the things of which they sing appear before the eyes of those that listen.

For Aragorn had been singing a part of the Lay of Lúthien which tells of the meeting of Lúthien and Beren in the forest of Neldoreth. And behold! there Lúthien walked before his eyes in Rivendell, clad in a mantle of silver and blue, fair as the twilight in Elven-home; her dark hair strayed in a sudden wind, and her brows were bound with gems like stars.

For a moment Aragorn gazed in silence, but fearing that she would pass away and never be seen again, he called to her crying, Tinúviel, Tinúviel! even as Beren had done in the Elder Days long ago.

Then the maiden turned to him and smiled, and she said: ‘Who are you? And why do you call me by that name?’

And he answered: 'Because I believed you to be indeed Lúthien Tinúviel, of whom I was singing. But if you are not she, then you walk in her likeness.’

'So many have said,’ she answered gravely. 'Yet her name is not mine. Though maybe my doom will be not unlike hers.’

Crown of Aragorn

tap picture for better quality

——

Also known as the crown of Gondor, or the Silver Crown, it was said to have come from a Númenorean helmet, one that the great kings in battle used to wear. When it got crushed in the Battle of Dagorlad, the helmet of Isildur became the next Crown of Gondor.

When Atanatar II The Glorious became king, he refashioned ht helmet into the crown we know to have been King Elessar’s, or Aragorn. The crown was once more lost as Eärnur lay it in the lap of King Eärnil II, his father, in the houses of the dead, and it remained there for 969 long years, awaiting the next king.

It was Gandalf who eventually handed Aragorn, or Elessar, his crown on May 1st of the year 3019 of the Third Age. It was tradition that the helmet be passed from father to son, but as Aragorn had no family left, he let Gandalf bring it to him, to crown him as king of Gondor, reclaiming his title as the last heir to the throne.

Andúril

tap picture for better quality

——

Andúril (or “Flame of the West”) is the sword that Aragorn II Elessar wielded in the infamous Lord of the Rings books. The blade was reforged from the shards of Narsil, which was the sword of King Erendil, used by his son Isildur to cut the One Ring off of Sauron’s hand.

Its blade had engraved the designs of Seven Stars between the rayed Sun and the crescent Moon, symbols of Elendil, and his sons Anárion and Isildur. It also had many cirth.

Aragorn carried the blade with him the entire length on the journey to Mordor, after it was reforged by the elves of Rivendell when the Council of Lord Elrond had ended. Upon arriving in Lothlorién after Gandalf’s supposed death, Lady Galadriel gave the man a sheath for the blade, as a gift for the oncoming journey.

Later, in Rohan, Aragorn showed his sword to justify his words and show his heritage to Éomer. With the weapon, he reclaimed his heritage and rights to the throne of Gondor in Return of the King.

Hello friends, new and old! Welcome to my new blog!

It’s hard to sell oneself in merely a header, title or description, so I figured - for the sake of anyone who wanders into this place - that I would organize a bunch of fundamental information right here!

Who am I?

Who are you?You needn’t think of that now, unless of course, you’d like to.

My name is Jules, I use he/they pronouns, and I am a lifelong fan of Tolkien’s work and world. As a small child, my mother read The Lord of the Rings to me, and by the age of six I had seen the films. I read the books for myself between the ages of eight and ten, and have done so some times since.

Tolkien’s work shaped me fundamentally from that starry-eyed chapter in my youth, everything from my fantastical adventures and ambitious in my backyard to my perception of masculinity, femininity, love, power and comradery. The young man I am and grow to be each day is very much indebted to the characters and stories of all The Professor’s work.

What is this blog?

Obviously, this blog is themed around an appreciation for anything and everything Middle Earth

In particular, though, I intend to post a combination of quotes from the novels and/or films, and brief observations or notations I find in the margins of my copies of the novels as I re-read them, perhaps with some fresh notes to join them. In addition, I am taking a class this semester in University entitled “J. R. R. Tolkien and Counterculture,” (with our dear @wilderlandranger) and will likely post some notes, food for thought, or even scribbles for assignments.

There will also likely be memes. Maybe some of my own writing.

I am very much going to treat this blog like a more organized version of a very disorganized Word doc currently festering on my Desktop called “Tolkien Diary,” if that adds any briefer explanation or flavor to what you expect.

Additives and Addendums

If I find anything more noteworthy to add to this post of great importance, then it will be listed under this section! But, for now, good day!

Based on this post I made, I couldn’t decide who to ship myself with, so I just did a bunch of different characters I liked, haha. Hope y’all enjoy, and special shout-out to @cryptichobbitand@lady-latte for inspiring me!

Aragorn

  • Well, Aragorn is 6’ 6” and I’m 4’ 11” so that’ll be interesting
  • I have very messy long brown hair. It’s practically a mane at this point, it’s wild and unkempt at all times. Just picturing him trying to brush and wash it is kinda funny, but also very heartfelt. I just imagine him trying to be gentle, but running into knot after knot and getting frustrated
  • The bulk of our relationship would be telling stories. I could tell him all about Thor and the other deities I know, and he’d probably just eat that up. He might even want to make an offering to them with me, which would be so much fun!
  • We’d spend a lot of time talking about our family lines and connections, for sure.
  • I have a burning need to get stronger, both physically and mentally, which I think he would admire. I do worry about becoming obsessed with my weight and strength, so he’d probably be really good at getting me out of that cycle if needed
  • I’m very focused on self-improvement, but that can lead to me stretching myself too thin and trying to do a hundred things at once. He’d be very good at helping with this, I’m sure
  • But I think he’d also admire that, in a way
  • We both love getting messy, so we could wrestle and race in the mud and rain and not be bothered. That’d be great
  • We’d probably be a very supportive couple, constantly having one another’s best interest at heart

Faramir

  • I think our relationship would be very sentimental and soft
  • I know I’d try my best to comfort him, make him feel safe and loved, and I’d like to think that’d make him get attached quickly
  • He’d probably get very protective
  • I have a lot of family issues myself, so we could bond over that
  • Comfort and protect one another
  • And I’ve been told that I’m “wise beyond my years” so he’d probably appreciate that too
  • We could spend hours in the Gondor Library, telling stories and sharing legends
  • I think we’re both deep and philosophical sort of people, so that’d mesh well I think
  • He’d be very curious about Thor and all the other spirits, I’m sure
  • And he could give me piggy-back rides and cuddling with him would be so lovely!!
  • Just two sorta broken people helping one another back on their feet
  • I have this thing where I just.. giggle for no reason. I think of something funny in my head, and laugh out loud, and startle everyone around me. I feel like Faramir would find that very cute and endearing
  • I can totally see me wearing his clothes, and him just melting seeing how big they are on me.

Eowyn

  • On one hand, I could see us as being a slow-burn kinda relationship
  • We’re both very aloof and I can get nervous and back out of things, so it may take us awhile to get together
  • But on the other hand, I CANNOT resist a pretty girl
  • And Eowyn might appreciate a tomboyish kinda person in her life, so it may go quicker than I think
  • We could do workouts together
  • I could make clothes, armor and weapons for her
  • Care for horses with one another
  • And I’d definitely tell her all the stories I know about powerful women from my world
  • Can you imagine showing her Mulan? I love her
  • I can see Eowyn being very protective over me as we grow close
  • Which is a good thing, I can be really scared of confrontation, so I need a protector in my life
  • I would still do the cooking in the relationship, though
  • I’d call her “My Athena” or “My Freya” after telling her about the powerful goddesses she reminds me of
  • I think we’d make a very lovely couple

Merry Brandybuck

  • I’m a little taller than him, especially before the entdraught when he was still 3’ 6”
  • And I can see Merry being very happy about having a tall girlfriend
  • Since I’m working to build muscle, I imagine him asking me to pick him up a lot and carry him
  • Which I’d do happily, tbh
  • God he’s cute
  • I’d tell him all sorts of stories about my life and connection to deities
  • And he’d talk about his and Pippin’s adventures right back!
  • Though, I can see him getting a little jealous when he hears that Thor flirts with me a lot
  • Good luck squaring up with the god of Thunder, Merry, really hope that goes well for ya (LOL)
  • I’d embroider some waistcoats for us to wear
  • Though I get the sense he’s be just as happy wearing one of my T-shirts too
  • He’d look so cute in them
  • We’re both very protective of one another, obviously
  • Constantly looking out for one another
  • Though, he’d probably have to tell off bullies for me more often. I’ll fight if it’s a life or death situation, but I can be very nervous about such things when they’re not
  • Thanks, past trauma
  • We both have messy hair, his is curly while mine is wavy, so we can exchange tips and take baths together!!
  • And he’d probably love my Rock and Roll playlist almost as much as I love it! I can see him binging Queen and AC/DC songs
  • I also have this vow where, if I ever get married, I’m wearing a kilt to the wedding. Because if the person I’m to marry doesn’t want that, I shouldn’t be marrying them. I feel like Merry would be very on-board with that

i just am DYING for some platonic co-parenting with Elrond & Gilraen raising Estel like— why do people constantly leave Gilraen out of Estel fics when you have a perfectly good opportunity for some platonic coparenting content!

  • soft smiles exchanged whenever tiny toddler Estel says something endearingly stupid
  • Elrond entertaining Estel so Gilraen can take a goddamn nap
  • Estel behaves better for Elrond when it comes to bathtime but in general is just allergic to getting clean but in GENERAL this is Elrond’s department because there’s minimal small feral child wrassling
  • Gilraen falling asleep with Estel on a couch somewhere and Elrond tucking them in fondly
  • ‘hey can i do the thing’ ‘what did your mom say’    *mumbling* –she said no–  ‘yeah your mom is absolutely correct’
  • Estel getting a cold or something and new single mom Gilraen freaking out and getting nervous but Elrond, who has raised countless little Edain children going ‘he’ll be fine don’t worry’ and helping them through it
  • JUST
  • Elrond filling that father-shaped hole in Estel’s life without erasing Arathorn
  • Always making sure that Estel knows who his dad is (without directly telling him, you know, the important part about him being the heir to Gondor– he knows who his dad is on a personal level, not a political one), Elrond being able to tell both Estel and Gilraen stupid stories about what Arathorn was like when he was small!!
  • Lots of reassurances to Gilraen that she’s doing a great job
  • Emotionally supporting each other
  • Mutually supporting each other’s rules and boundaries when it comes to both how they raise Estel together, and also about (healthy!) discipline– healthy discussions around how to keep rules consistent
  • Elrond constantly being so careful not to overstep. Gilraen constantly affirming that he’s allowed to Dad
  • Best friends Gilraen and Elrond <3
  • just !! platonic coparenting

i want tiny!estel & healthy coparents!elrond&gilraen stories so. much. there are some but NOT ENOUGH JUST NOT ENOUGH NEVER ENOUGH
