So… I’m still not over Arcane

Today’s arcane art is… (spins wheel) emo Ekko! Tomorrow? Who knows <3

I finally finished Arcane

Another redraw

I’m enjoying this a lot, can’t wait to draw my ocs in Arcane style

Peak cinema is when two characters who used to be friends are on opposite sides of a war, and when they finally fight, their action scene is interspersed with scenes of them playing a game or having a spar as children and the action scene that’s currently happening is mimicking what was happening in the past.

Chapter 38

You didn’t want to wake up. You were too tired and drained for that and your mind was covered in a pleasant fog of oblivion. But that noise… It kept repeating itself, echoing through your mind louder and louder each time.

Your brain couldn’t really register what you heard, it was just there and it somehow worried you - apart from being annoying.

Cling. Cling. Cling.

You frowned and opened your eyelids that felt heavier than ever in the complete darkness. It was still late at night - around you it was almost pitch black, apart from the weak light of the moon outside Ekko’s window, painting a silver square on the wooden floor by his table. Judged by the silence, everyone was asleep, probably.

Ekko slept on his back and your head rested on his warm, bare chest, steadily rising and deflating as he breathed. You remembered falling asleep to the sound of his heart peacefully beating under your ears. His left arm, that was under you was wrapped around your shoulder, while your legs entangled with his. You liked this moment; you surely didn’t want it to end.

Cling. Cling. Cling.

But this damn noise… You looked at Ekko’s stress-free face, happy to see him like this once in a while, before carefully sitting up, gently unwrapping your shoulder of his arm. You tried not to wake him up - he needed the sleep. But you had to investigate the source of the repeating sound that you could now hear was metallic. As if someone banged their fists against a huge piece of metal.

You climbed out of the bed, looking for your own clothes in the complete darkness to dress up before leaving. They were all over the floor - you had to check twice not to put on some of Ekko’s accidentally. He shifted a little behind you, making the bed creak under him, as you pulled your top on, but he was too tired to wake up.

You were just going to quickly look around, find out what was making the noise, and then come back to fall asleep again, by the young firelight. Your heart ached as you looked back at his dark silhouette from the opened entrance of his room, but you sighed and made yourself promise inside your head that you were going to be quick.

Your instincts were just telling you to check out what was making the noise. You carefully closed the door behind you and grabbed the hoverboard leaned against the wall. In the absolute silence around you, even your own heartbeat seemed too loud - not talking about the sharp, mechanic noise of the hoverboards engine…

You immediately turned off the device once you got close to the ground and carefully leaned it against the trunk of the huge tree. It was dark outside as well - only the moon’s dim light helped you see where you stepped. Here and there a sleepy firelight flew by, but they weren’t as active tonight as usually.

Cling. Cling. Cling.

You froze in your place to find out the direction of the noise.

Cling. Cling. Cling.

It was coming from your brother’s cell…

Your stomach clenched into a nervous knot as you started heading towards the little, metal door along the curved walls. Your heart pounded against your chest, when you got there and peeked inside the dark premise through the small, barred window on the door - only to see your brother’s dark figure hitting the wall with his head…

“Oh, no, Neo…” you sighed sadly as you grabbed the cold, metal bars to lean your face closer. “Don’t… Don’t do that!” You asked him, watching him hurting himself with such a force, that it made you flinch each time. The metal plates, used to reinforce the room clung after each impact with your brother’s head…

His glowing, purple eyes shot towards you when he heard your voice, but seeing you only made him more nervous. You saw how his eyes became shinier, and angry grunts left his huffing body for a few short seconds, before he started banging his head faster and with more strength, whimpering in his pain he caused himself. Your heart broke for the sight…

“You’re safe here!” You said quickly. You felt it deep down, in the back of your stomach, that he was distressed because he was afraid, he’d hurt someone… He was always the protective type. Back when you managed to turn him back for a short period of time, he was instantly worried he’d hurt you too… “My friend worked on this room for you and trust me, you can’t get out of here…” You smiled weakly at his shadowed figure in the dark, little room. “You can’t hurt anyone.” You added to reassure him even more.

He didn’t stop headbutting the wall, but was his pace really slowing down or were you just imagining? Either way, you decided to talk to him more. You weren’t exactly sure whether he could understand your words or not, but you wanted to tell him everything that had happened to you ever since that day, you decided to stole yourself shimmer.

“I think you’ll like him.” You went on, as you thought about Scar. “He’s absolutely a big brother type, just like you.” You chuckled a little. “I trust him…”

Neo’s whines got quieter, though the banging still hadn’t stopped. You let go of the barres, that got warmed up under your touch and turned your back on the door - only to lean against it. You slowly slipped downwards, to sit down. So much for making your little night walking quick…

You longed to be back by Ekko’s side, but you couldn’t just leave your brother here on his own, when he was clearly stressed, and you talking to him, to calm him down, seemed to be working.

“I have so much to tell you, Neo…” you sighed, pulling your knees up to your chest. Your head rested against the door behind you. “I’m pretty sure you are going to freak out once you’ll learn how I got here.” You chuckled again.“ I think I’ll keep that part for myself for now…” he would probably call you an idiot and got angry if he could talk and you told him about your silly, little plan.

“But I’m so much more independent now. And I’ve stopped hiding my powers!” Your fingers nervously fiddled with each other as you talked. “There are people out there who are actually talking about me out there… They… They know my name, and what I can do…” you shrugged a little. “I help others - there are so many people in need… Ekko, he’s the leader here, constantly works on trying to make this place better for everyone, and it feels good that there’s something I can do as well about it.”

“You know, Ekko… he helped me grow so much as a person.” you smiled brightly to yourself, and felt the hotness inside your chest as you talked about the young firelight. “I think, once I’ll heal you properly, and you can get to know each other, you’ll like him very much…” you got quiet for a second. The banging stopped. You let out a relieved sigh, glad that Neo wasn’t hurting himself anymore…

“He’s also like you, you know, in so many aspects.” You smiled. “He always wants to help others, and he’s honest, clever and, well, he can also be very protective…” Yes. You were sure Neo and Ekko would like each other.

“I’m going to heal you!” You said, determined, into the darkness. “I promise, that I will not rest, until I finally can get you back, Neo.” You promised to yourself as well… It was just about time for you to finally start learning to have full control over your own powers.

You thought about going back to sleep. To snug tightly up to Ekko and have him wrapped his arms around your figure… But what if Neo got stressed again? No, you couldn’t leave him on his own, one more time. Not anymore…

You yawned into the darkness and lied down to the cold and hard ground under you, using your own arm as a pillow for your head. When you closed your eyes, you honestly believed you wouldn’t be able to sleep that night, in such a comfortable position - but only a few minutes later, you fell into a dreamless sleep.

Chapter 37

“What the hell was that, huh?” Ekko asked. You could see his frustration on the deepness of the puckers around his nose. The two of you were sitting on his bed now, the tiny, oil lamp on the boy’s desk being the only light source in the small room, fighting the darkness outside. Even the firelights living in the tree’s crown seemed to be less active today than usually - maybe because it was also warmer than usually.

Ekko had already thrown his jacket to the chair next to his desk, along with his scarf and you made him take off his tank top as well - to be able to see his injuries better.

“I don’t know…” you replied as your hands gently folded around the roundness of his shoulder to heal the disjointed limb before dealing with his cuts and bruises too. “I’ve never seen anything like that before. I mean, my brother’s quite unusual as well, so…” you shrugged as your mind wandered back to the wolf-like creature. It disappeared completely, but to be honest, you didn’t even stay around the black lanes much more to investigate it. You and Scar grabbed your brother quickly, while he was still unconscious, and headed back to the base as soon as possible after tying him up as well, just to make sure.

Neo was still knocked out - at least he was a few minutes ago - and in his new ‘room’ now. Which both calmed you and made you nervous at the same time.

I was talking about you…” Ekko said and you froze. You were kind of expecting him to call you out on your stupid decisions and he had all the rights to do so. And yet, your stomach still turned uncomfortably as you looked into the brown eyes of the boy by your side. “If there are at least two of us telling you that an idea is stupid, you have to believe it!” he was angry, you could hear that. But he also tried to restrain himself.

“I know…” you said under your nose, looking away from him. “I’m sorry… I just… I thought it was my brother who ripped those men apart, and I couldn’t have bared the thought of him committing any more of those murders…” you sighed. “I just… You know, I have known about him for long weeks now and I have done close to nothing to help him.” you looked at the young firelight again. You saw a mixture of fury and empathy twinkling in his eyes as he looked down at you from his height.

“I’m sorry for not listening to you and getting you and Scar in danger… It won’t happen again.” you sighed and returned to healing his shoulder. You heard the uncomfortable noise of the two joints sliding over each other slowly as your powers worked, but Ekko didn’t even flinch. You saw him buried under his thoughts, contemplating whether to say what was on his mind or not.

He stayed silent for a few more seconds, but when you reached for his face to pay attention to his wounds there, he couldn’t hold it back anymore. “You have no idea how many times I had to watch you being ripped apart…” he sighed tiredly and you furrowed your brows. “You’re only lucky because I had the Z-drive with me.” He pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and index finger to massage it, along with his eyes, as if he wanted to erase the pictures from his mind.

You had the feeling he had to reverse a few times after some 'accidents’, but hearing him talk about seeing you die - you felt a shiver run along your spine. It was just so surreal…

“Well, it’s a good thing you had it with you then…” you chuckled nervously but the puckers around Ekko’s nose grew deeper. You laughing at the situation was probably not the reaction he wanted at that moment.

“I also had it with myself when Ajuna died!” He said and you could hear the annoyed anger in his tone. But he was right… You should have listened to them. If not for your own sake than for theirs at least.

It won’t happen again.” You repeated yourself, gently cupping his face to finish healing his wounds. You were serious when you said that - though you also knew, that your impulsive decision making was something you couldn’t really help…

You saw him deflate a little under your touch and the nervous clench in your stomach, you hadn’t even noticed was there, also seemed to ease for that.

The silence around you ate itself into your ears. It felt like the whole world was asleep except the two of you - which was probably partly true if you took the whole world for the firelight base. The realization certainly gave you an idea…

“You know, everyone’s probably asleep by now.” You said, letting go of his face to slide your hand over his chest.

“Yeah, probably.” Ekko replied tiredly and he seemed absolutely clueless - so you decided to give him another hint of what you were thinking of.

“Meaning…” your hands slid even more down, towards his belly, your thumb gently stroking his skin where his happy trail started. “That no one will knock on your door anytime soon.” You saw the realization on the boy’s features and his frustrated expression changed into a cocky one in just the fraction of a second.

“You’re trying to change the subject.” he stated simply and watched you crawl onto him to sit yourself on his lap. He wrapped his arms around your back as you lied your palms onto the warm skin on his shoulders.

“Is it working?” you chuckled a little, as your eyes wandered to look at his lips. Oh, how you loved those lips…

“You know that I’m still mad at you, right?” he asked, with a half-smile he couldn’t compress, showing his incisors as he raised his chin a little, trying to seem taller under you.

“In that case…” you leaned closer to him. “I will definitely need to propitiate you as soon as possible.” you whispered and kissed him. He parted his lips right away to stroke your tongue with his, but he wasn’t rushing you now - he had a casual pace, deepening the kiss slowly but steadily, tasting you with bigger bites with each second.

His fingers carved into your skin as he firmly pulled your body even closer to his and you already felt a bulge forming inside his pants. You smiled to yourself as you glided your pelvis against his and you immediately felt the unconscious counter reaction of him, bucking into you as a response.

His hands reached for the edge of your shirt to pull it off your body and you eagerly helped him with that. He parted from the kiss, both to pull the piece of clothing over your head and to look at your bare chest with darkened eyes. His fingers on his right hand entangled with your hair - only to swiftly pull your head back, giving him a clear opening at your throat.

Without hesitation, he ducked his head to gently bite the soft skin under your jaw, stroking it with his tongue right after and you shut your eyes to give yourself fully in to the feeling of his lips wandering along your neck. But then, when you felt the slight pain of sucking, your eyes popped open and you furrowed your brows.

“You’re gonna leave a mark…” you warned him, forgetting the fact that you could heal it in no time, and tried to push his head away but he was adamant.

And?” He mumbled against your neck, the way his breath tickled your skin sent shivers of pleasure along your body, covering you in goosebumps. “Everyone should know by now that you’re with me…” he went on, and your chest got ignited, making your heart rush to escape your ribs under the hotness. “…That you’re mine… So that they can think twice before even considering fucking with you…” he continued as he advanced further down your neck, his hand still holding your head in place.

His words surprised you. Apart from that one time when he said he loved you, he never really talked about his feelings. He was probably like this because he’d seen you 'die’ and that hit close to home, after having to lose so many…

“Let’s get this off you…” Ekko said when the two of you parted for air, tugging the waist of your pants and you agreed with him with an eager nod. You climbed off him to stand up and kick the piece of clothing off your body, having Ekko’s eyes on you all the while, though his hands worked to get rid of his own pants and boots as well.

You stood in front of him naked, as he looked up at you, and gently reached your hand out to stroke his face. Your thumb ran over his cheekbone and he instantly leaned into your touch to kiss your palm, while his arms longingly grabbed your waist and pulled you close to him. Close enough to lay a gentle kiss onto your belly, making you chuckle a little at the ticklish feeling.

He then pulled your body back onto his lap and you obeyed him, his lips looking for yours to peck them quickly before kissing your cheeks and jawbone, then your neck and then…

You had thrown your head back when he licked your nipple, closing his lips around it to suck it in, hollowing his cheeks. Your fingers scratched the skin on his shoulders and his arms pulled you even closer, making you feel like he was trying to collapse the two of you into one, single entity. Every move of his was more affectionate and controlling than ever, but you didn’t mind the slight dominance.

You raised yourself onto your knees, keeping your weight on his shoulder with one hand, reaching down to guide him into you with the other. Pulling the skin back, you grabbed his cock at the base, gently bathing the tip in your wetness at first, then stroking your own clit as well, his eyes hungrily resting on the sight.

When you let out a breathy moan, his hands on your waist pushed you down impatiently and he slipped fully inside you without a warning. Your eyes teared up a little at the sudden stretch, you weren’t expecting, but you held your breath back and leaned your forehead against his, waiting for your own self to adjust to his length and thickness for a few short seconds.

“Gosh, you’re big…” you huffed, and immediately felt his fingers arch into your skin for the compliment. He urged you to raise your hips, and you did as he pleased; slowly, very- very slowly working yourself up and down on his length. His belly brushed your clit as you moved, making you want to rush to reach your climax as soon as possible but you restrained yourself, and kept your torturingly slow pace.

“You feel so damn good, baby…” Ekko murmured, before grabbing your cheeks to pull you into an affectionate kiss and you mewled into his mouth, your hips never stopping the steady up and down motion.

He buried his face into the crook of your neck and you tried to stop your moans to not be too loud in the complete silence, but you couldn’t, really. You felt yourself getting closer and closer to an orgasm, you’d been longing for so long. You closed your eyes and concentrated on the arsenal of feelings - his cock sliding against your walls, his breath against your skin, his wandering hands all over your body and the sounds he made… Your movements became less coordinated and your moans also became huffs when…

“Are you close?” Ekko asked, breathing into your ear and your only answer was a weak nod. His hands immediately reached for your hips to push you down, not letting you move at all.

“What are you doing?” You asked, your eyebrows knotted together in your confusion as you leaned back to look into his eyes. He raised his chin again and looked back at you with a dead serious expression, though his eyes were just as lustful as yours.

“I feel like I need to teach you how to listen to me better…” he said and you saw a wicked sparkle lighting up in his brown eyes.

“Oh, no you don’t…” you huffed, frustrated that you were stolen of your climax but Ekko only chuckled at that.

“See? That’s exactly what I’m talking about…” he leaned back on the bed, pulling you with himself and with one, well-coordinated movement, he rolled the two of you so that he got above you. He pulled himself out of you, for which you made the most disappointed noise, and positioned himself so that your thighs cradled his face. You pushed yourself up onto your elbows to look at him angrily as he softly kissed your inner thighs.

His breath tickled your clit sending a pleasant shiver along your body before the flat of his tongue licked through your folds. He only tasted you at first, as if your juices were the most delicious dessert he’d ever eaten, before licking your most sensitive part, making you fall back to the bed immediately. You twitched and trembled in his mouth as he slowly tongued your clit, sucking on the little ball of nerve as if it was some kind of life elixir for him, and when you felt yourself getting close again, you couldn’t help grinding your hips against his lips, longing for more friction.

His hands immediately pinned you down by your hips, not letting you move again, and his tongue stopped working on you.

Ekko…?” you huffed angrily.

“What? Were you close?” he asked again and you heard the smile on his voice.

“Fuck you…” you gathered your strength to push your overstimulated- self up onto your elbows again to shoot a telling look at him, but the boy was already making his way up on your body. He kissed you where he could - on your belly, on your ribs, between your breasts, up until your neck. Everywhere Ekko’s lips touched your skin, you felt an electrical spark jolt through you, making you tremble and shiver. He pushed you back onto the bed and grabbed both of your hands to pull them above your head.

His clench on your wrists were so tight that, yet again, you couldn’t move as the young firelight kissed your skin closer and closer to your breasts. Of course, you whimpered when you felt his breath above your right nipple before licking it ever so gently. He barely touched it, just teased you again for long, long seconds, before finally closing his lips around it to suck it in.

You arched your back into the boy’s mouth, grinding your hips against the thin air, longing for him to finally fuck the life out of you…

“Ekko, please…” you moaned. “I’ll do what you say, just please…” you stopped to swallow. “…I need you…” you felt him pause and raise his head to look at you.

“Promise?” The boy asked and you could hear the amusement in his voice.

“Yeah…” you looked at him and he finally let go of your hands. You immediately reached for his head to entangle your fingers with the blonde locks and pull him into a kiss, while one of Ekko’s arms reached under your hips and pulled you closer.

You licked into his mouth as he aligned himself with your entrance, and when he pushed in, you moaned into the kiss. Your legs immediately wrapped around his ass to urge him to fasten up his moves and it seemed that the boy was finally done with torturing you. In fact, he was just as eager as you to finally be able to cum as he thrusted into you with a fastening pace.

He leaned his forehead against yours, watching your panting lips catching for air after each time he pushed back inside you with hooded eyes - though he still seemed to be restraining himself, careful not to finish before you.

Your moans became huffs and your whole body was trembling as you got closer and closer - again - to your own climax. Your fingers carved into the skin on Ekko’s back as you called for his name.

“Are you close?” He asked and if you had the strength to stop and look at him with the universal expression of 'i’m gonna kill you’, you swear you would have, but you were indeed oh, so close already… “Come for me…” he continued this time, and as if he had ordered you, your legs cramped against his thighs and a wave of pleasure ran across your body - starting from your toes, through your core and stomach, all the way up to your head, making your hairs reach towards the sky on your nape…

Ekko followed you closely, pulling himself out of you just a second before releasing a load of warm sperm onto your pelvis. The boy compressed his moans as he stroked himself a few more times before laying his dick against your stomach and leaning on both of his lower arms by the sides of your head, his forehead still resting on yours.

He cupped your face with his right palm, stroking your lower lip with his thumb as he gathered himself, and you could see such an amount of affection glistening in his eyes that it stirred your insides and warmed up your chest - even more.

“Will you always punish me like this if I don’t behave?” You panted and looked at him through your fogged mind. Your brain was just as pleasantly numb as your whole body as you let yourself get lost in the moment.

The boy only closed his eyes and chuckled a little before answering.

“You enjoyed it too much, huh?”

//A/N.: Omg, guys I’m so sorry for disappearing! I managed to develop asthma for my own cat who I had had for 5 years now and coughed so much that I have intercostal muscle strain (I’m not sure I translated it correctly, it’s when your muscles between your ribs get sore and hurt), and now every time I take a breath, it feels like someone’s stabbing me in the back :“) Anyways, so I’ll try to get back to regular updates and I brought you a longer chapter with smut to try and compensate for my absence! Chapter 36

The creature was groaning in the shadows as you gathered yourself from the ground. You couldn’t explain why, but you had the feeling it was fighting himself, trying to restrain its own instinct to rip you apart as it panted. Its saliva dripped to the ground next to its feet.

At first glance, it seemed like a wolf, but what was the strangest to you is that it was standing on its hind legs. Its fur-covered body seemed to be modified artificially - metal claws were at the end of its fingers and throughout his whole frame, a greenish liquid ran all over in translucent pipes, all starting from a huge container on its back.

You stood up, while still feeling a bit dizzy, looking straight into the glowing red eyes, and for a second, nothing happened. But then…

“What have you done…” it mumbled. Its voice was hoarse, dry and out of this earth… The fact that it could speak just made it scarier in your eyes. “Run for your life!” the warning roar sent shivers down your spine as it threw itself right after you and you were sure that in a second, you would end up in pieces. Just like those thugs in that alleyway…

If you could shield yourself - the thought rushed through your mind as you raised your arms up to protect your face. But you didn’t have the time to even just blink, everything happened so fast. Ekko jumped forward the same time as the beast, as if he knew its moves in advance, and yelled:

“Don’t shield!” You had the strangest feeling that he could read your mind… But how? You hadn’t even tried to just simply practice that side of your powers ever since you almost died to it… How could Ekko know that you were thinking about it? “You have to run!” he pushed you back to the ground, out of the way of the beast, and combining the momentum with all his force, he swung his metal pipe to batter the face of the creature, hitting it right on its jaw. Scar also moved by your side and kicked it on its chest, making it fly back to the ground.

“The hoverboards!” Ekko gave the next instruction and you jumped to your feet right away, starting to run to the opposite direction without a second thought, while reaching for the device on your back. The foggy air of the lower lanes itched the back of your throat and scratched your lungs as you breathed.

You hit the starting pedal with your fist and threw the hoverboard in front of you, jumping on it immediately. Letting out the biggest sigh of relief, you followed Ekko and Scar, who were both already flying in front of you, seeing them aiming above the houses. You wanted to go after them, when you noticed the clinking noise of metal screeching against concrete. Your brain needed a few seconds to realize it was the beast’s claws hitting the pavement under them and just when you turned the hoverboard towards the sky, something grabbed the device under you, pulling it back with such a force that your body continued to fly onward.

I can’t save you!” You heard it shout again, through his growls.

You couldn’t keep your scream inside your throat as you fell, and hit the cold, wet ground under you. Again. You were really getting tired of falling for today…

Your only luck was that you didn’t pass out. You felt dizzy for hitting your head and your left shoulder also hurt, but you tried to get up as fast as you could. Your eyes desperately searched for your hoverboard around you but your gaze got caught on the beast’s glowing eyes in the distant, as it ran for you and only for you…

You saw Ekko flew towards you from the corner of your eyes but something was just off about him. He only hit the beast once and yet, he seemed like he had to fought an army… he held his left arm awkwardly and on his face bruises and scratches were all over. You noticed his Z-drive glowing more than usually on his back, and it clicked to you suddenly.

It wasn’t the first time he went through all this…

Before he could have activated the device one more time, and the beast could have gotten close to you, you heard another howl.

A familiar one

And a second later, from a side street, that ran at right angles to the one you were stumbling through, someone else roamed out with such a force, that he had to dig his claws into the concrete ground under himself to be able to stop. A second later, he threw himself after the wolf-like creature and by its hind legs, he pulled it back to himself.

Neo!” You screamed when you saw the beast hit back, causing your brother to whine up painfully, but when he noticed the creature head towards you again, Neo didn’t hesitate… He jumped onto it one more time and they became a howling, growling and barking mess as both of them tried to overcome the other.

Using the time Neo managed to give you, you started searching for your hoverboard around you. It took you a few seconds to finally see it, - lying halfway between you and the monster fighting your brother.

“Here goes nothing…” you mumbled as you dashed forward, trying to run as fast as possible despite all your aching limbs and dizzy head. When you reached it, your legs slipped as you had to brake so quickly and you fell onto your knees but you didn’t pay attention to the pain.

Your fingers finally locked onto the hoverboard’s cold, metallic edge, when you heard the long, painful yowl. It could only mean that one of the beasts won… You had to fight your urge with all your heart to not stop and look back to see who got hurt, while still kneeling on the ground. You needed to get high enough first so that you wouldn’t get caught one more time…

But what if it was your brother who got injured? What if he would die without your help? Could you really help him in this situation?

Ekko had the Z-drive, yes, but he had been wounded as well… you couldn’t risk neither him nor Scar to get injured because of you.

And still, you turned back for a second, still half on your knees to just at least know what happened… Having more questions would have dried you crazy, you knew that.

But the alleyway seemed empty. You couldn’t see neither the wolf-like monster nor your brother anywhere. Only the greenish fog swirled at the place they had had fought each other just a few seconds ago. With a heavy heart, you wanted to turn back to really jump onto your hoverboard this time, but your brother’s distorted face greeted you from so close, that you felt the heat coming from his body.

It surprised - and also scared you - so much, that you wanted to scream, but your voice got stuck inside your throat as you looked deep into the glowing eyes. A purplish, shiny liquid was dripping from a wound above his right eyebrow - it was probably his blood that got completely mixed with shimmer by now…

Your brother was whining quietly, suffering from his wounds and your heart shattered inside your chest. He heard your scream probably. Your old home wasn’t far from where you were at that moment. He came to protect you

And it could only mean that he still remembered you deep down…

You felt the tears burning your eyes as in that moment, you were really looking into the eyes of your brother. He was the one in control, you could see that… His glance was so soft and was asking for help again. You slowly, and carefully reached your hand out, to try and heal his wounds he got from the other beast. He was bleeding from several cuts, all over his distorted, shivering body.

But the moment your fingers touched his face, he blinked and your brother suddenly disappeared. His panting became wild again as he raised his hand to hit you with all his force - but Ekko was faster.

After an enormous hit on the back of his head, Neo collapsed to the ground, unconsciously and you just knelt there, watching him in slight shock.

Is this your brother?” Ekko panted, pressing his left arm to his body with his right.

You weren’t able to force a single word out of your lips, so instead of an answer, you could only nod as you swallowed your stomach back down.

You begged Ekko that only the three of you go out to investigate that ’beast’. Just him, Scar and you. You were too afraid that if it really was your brother, he would have hurt more people… You trusted everyone among the Firelights, it wasn’t about that. The one you didn’t trust was Neo. Or what was left of him.

So many weeks had passed since you last saw him in your old home. He said he kept losing himself. What if it got worse? What if he couldn’t even recognize you anymore, even deep down?

You convinced Ekko to bring the Z-drive with himself, which wasn’t an easy task. Since he couldn’t save Ajuna, he didn’t use the device at all. It was just collecting dust in the corner of his room, ever since he fixed the glass, and more or less pieced it up to its original condition. But you felt much safer when you saw it hanging over his chest…

Especially as you stepped among the ripped bodies and puddles of blood under your feet… The metallic smell made you nauseous and your stomach weakly trembled as you searched for any clue in the small, dark alleyway in the depth of the Black Lanes…

Could it really be your brother who did this? If it was him, then you definitely had to hurry to find him… You tried to look away from the torn figures but your eyes unintentionally kept flying back to watch them, maybe to carve them deep inside the convolutions of your brain to remember them when you’d ever try to sleep again… Or maybe to remind you why you needed to find your brother as fast as possible…

The fact, that this place was only about a 20 minutes’ walk from your home only strengthened your concerns about Neo. He could had easily reached this place to hunt, and then go back to your old home and rest until the next time he feels an urge to rip people apart. You blinked when you stepped on a hand.

“Oh…” you mumbled. “I’m so sorry…” you said, as if you could hurt someone who was already dead. Stupid…

“Is this near the place you grew up?” Ekko asked and your body shivered in your surprise. You had gotten so lost in the arsenal of dead around you - at least 5 or 6 men - that you forgot about both him and Scar walking a few steps behind you.

“Yes.” you swallowed, finally ripping your eyes from the sight to look at the boy stepping by your side. “It’s a few minutes of walk from here, but yes. Neo could have easily gotten here…” you saw Ekko search your face but you didn’t look at him.

“Funny.” he said quietly and this little sentence surprised you. “Where I grew up, and the pawnshop I used to work at, is also in a mile’s radius.” you looked at him, and felt grateful for helping you take your mind off the bodies around you. “What if we’ve met before already?” he asked and you didn’t even notice Scar kneeling down by each of the dead to search them.

“I doubt…” you smiled sadly at the boy by your side. “I had to stay at home all day, you know.” you shrugged, desperately trying to keep your eyes on the young firelight. “I only left our street a few times when I was a kid…”

“Y/N!” Scar interrupted you and you turned towards him right away. “This one’s still breathing.” he gestured towards the man, he was kneeling beside and you immediately hurried towards them. Both because you couldn’t just let someone suffer when you could help and because you needed to know how the monster looked like and where it went…

You crouched down by the man, trying not to look too long at the huge opened cut on his throat as you placed your hand onto his chest and used all your inner strength to be able to heal him. You felt your powers starting to work, and not long after, the poor bastard under your hands started choking on his own blood as the life slowly returned to him but the cuts were still too deep along his body. A few additional seconds later, he finally sat up under your hands, like a spring, and you opened your heavy eyelids, only to see Ekko push him back to the ground by his shoulder - poking him with his staff.

“Stay where you are!” he said under his mask that he had just put on before the man in front of you could had woken up. Scar followed his examples, but you didn’t want to wear a mask anymore…

“Where’s it?!” he asked, crawling backwards until his back collided with the cold, brick wall of the alley. “Is it gone?!” you could see his eyes pan along his dead mates and the shock on his face was clearly visible. “Oh my god…” he pulled his knees up and covered his head with both of his hands. You looked at Ekko by your side for help, but he just shook his head, showing you, he didn’t have much more ideas than you.

“Listen to me…” you said, placing your hands onto his shoulders. You didn’t have much time to waste… You felt your palms warming up and your powers were working again - which seemed to be calming down the man in front of you. “You need to tell me what did this to you.” you asked him quietly to which he only swallowed at first. His eyes kept nervously jumping between the three of your, but you didn’t let him look at the bodies again. You covered them from his sight with your frame.

“It was… a monster.” he pushed the words out in the end, pulling his body smaller by the wall. “It was terrible… It was the Howler!” he said the name and you could see the panic rising in his eyes again.

“Where did it go?” you asked the most important question, quickly before he could have given himself in to his own terror inside his head. “Did you… did you see where it went?” he only nodded and with a trembling hand, he pointed towards the far-right end of the alleyway…

***

Following the tracks of the beast was the easiest job. You just had to pay attention to the occasional drips or smudges of blood on the ground, sometimes splattered on the walls of the dark buildings all around you. You didn’t meet much people on your ways, but you were glad for that, because you were sure they only left you alone because there were three of you.

Most of their faces was covered with a hood, but the way their eyes twinkled out of the shadows, made shivers run along your spine. You definitely kept your hands near your weapon - the staff with the expandable ends. You just liked it. It gave you a chance to get farther away from enemies, while you could quickly jump on your hoverboard.

Not that you had to fight lots of enemies.

“They end here.” Scar rumbled as he kneeled down by a sewer. Its heavy metal lid was misplaced, meaning that someone did really went through there not long ago.

“Then let’s go.” you said right away, stepping to the sewer, trying to push the heavy, metal lid out of the way.

“No, Y/N…” Scar said and you paused to look at him.

“We couldn’t really defend ourselves down there.” Ekko joined him, crouching down by your side to be able to look into your eyes properly. “It’s too narrow and dark.”

You looked at them in confused disbelief. You were so close and they would just give up here.

“No.” you shook your head and took out your staff to use that as a crow bar. “I’m going anyway.”

As you struggled to open the lid, you couldn’t get rid of the pictures of those bodies you’d seen earlier. No way you would let your brother escape and roam around to commit more things like that… It would be on you… You were the one who knew how he was and still left him on his own for such a long time. In fact, those bodies… they were on you as well…

“Y/N, we can come back…” Ekko started when you finally managed to move the metal out of the way.

No!” you cut him off, maybe a little more heatedly than you wanted to. You looked at him and Scar, with your cheeks burning as you went on. “He is my brother.” you said, as if you were begging for their approvals. You didn’t know why. You would be going down there anyway…

You grabbed the edges of the entrance, preparing yourself to climb down, but you weren’t careful enough…

“Ouch…” you mumbled, looking at the huge cut on your palm you just got. It started to bleed right away. “Damn, I cut myself…” you said, but before you could have looked for a rug to wipe off your blood, you heard a howl.

It echoed through the sewers under you, sending the most chilling shiver down your spine. All your hairs stood towards the sky as you knew you had to jump back from the entrance, but you didn’t really have the time.

Something flew out of the sewers by you, knocking you back with such force, that you felt like you were only just a ragdoll as your body impacted the cold ground under you. All the air pressed out of your lungs as your eyes desperately searched for the thing that had just sent you to your back.

You heard the growl coming from the shadows in front of you. Then you saw the glowing eyes as well.

You didn’t know what this thing was.

You only knew that,

It wasn’t your brother…

Chapter 34

“You sure it’s gonna be able to hold him?” you asked and you couldn’t hide your worry from your expression. Scar only proudly nodded as he crossed his hands in front of his chest.

“100% sure.” he said as well but you still furrowed your brows.

“You haven’t seen him.” you went on, stepping closer to the metal door. It had been reinforced with so many additional pieces that it looked like a patch work blanket already and so was the walls of the little premise. “He is… he is strong and… I think he isn’t really capable to restrain himself…” your fingers grasped the metal bars on the door’s little peeking window as you looked at the soon-to-be prison in front of you.

“Yeah, you said that already.” Scar stepped by your side to observe his work even prouder than before. He and a few other firelights had been working for days now to modify a room at the firelight base - for your brother… You tried to convince Ekko that you didn’t find bringing Neo here - among children and sick - such a good idea, but he had been adamant about it.

Especially since there had started being reports about a ‘monster’ roaming around the lowest parts of Zaun, attacking people there. Mostly just scums in the Black Lanes where all kinds of illegal trades went off every day - that was why no one investigated the case yet. And though, you had no confirmation, you couldn’t shake off the idea of the beast being your brother.

There probably weren’t much dangerously mutated and extremely aggressive creatures roaming around every corner of Zaun…

Your heart worriedly sank for him. If it was really your brother - which was highly probable - then the more he roamed around attacking strangers, the more danger he got himself into. And he had also become less trackable… You just hoped that your old home was kind of a nest for him to which he returned after his hunts.

On one hand, you were happy that Ekko wanted to bring Neo here, where you could keep an eye out on him every day and try to heal him again, but on the other, you thought it was also too dangerous and maybe even a bit stupid…

You sighed as you closed the door of the small and dark premise. It was down, by the walls. Used to be a weapon warehouse before Ekko claimed it to be your brother’s new 'room’.

“Thank you.” You smiled honestly at the huge firelight by your side. You were grateful for what so many people did for you here, despite your concerns.

“You don’t have to.” Scar replied. “We saw what you can do. We are not afraid to have your brother here, you’re gonne heal him anyway. You should trust yourself…” he couldn’t finish his sentence. A loud ’boom’ coming from Ekko’s room, accompanied with a strong, blue light in his window shut him up. The two of you looked at each other, surprised at first, but then your tense shoulders loosened up.

“I’ll go, check on him.” You said, grabbing a hoverboard into your hands to which the huge firelight only nodded.

Ever since…. since Ajuna’s death a few weeks ago, Ekko had been tinkering with his inventions a lot again. But this time he actually focused on devices that could help him now. He said that, he wouldn’t let any more of you to loose his life again… You doubted it, given the fact that you had to live in Zaun, but of course, you didn’t mention it to the boy.His inventions weren’t as drastic as Heimerdinger’s for example, who had set up a complete arsenal of rockets to protect the base’s entrances… The boy had been working on smaller and more pacifist tools for fights that would only help to blind or immobilize the enemy while the firelights fled away. And yet, while making them Ekko wasn’t careful at all. You had lost count already of the broken fingers and noses and burns you healed in the past weeks…

You directed the hoverboard towards his window and tried to see through the thick cloud of blue smoke flowing out of his room when you reached it. You coughed as you hopped into the windowsill, blinking fast to get rid of the itchy feeling in your eyes.

“Ekko?” You asked, climbing into the premise.

“I’m all right…” you heard his voice. Your worry evaporated as Ekko stepped out of the cover of the smoke, that was slowly thinning around you, and you could see a strange kind of device in his hands. It reminded you of a thick, metal frisbee.

“I was just trying to make a flash grenade.” He coughed. “I wanted to use the gemstone dust, but I probably screwed up at one of the steps.” He put the device onto his desk.

“Well, I mean, you can still use it as a smoke bomb…” you joked pointing all around you for which Ekko chuckled. He leaned against his table and pulled you closer to himself by your wrist.

It’s good you’re here…” he mumbled before kissing you longingly and embracing you into a tight hug. You wanted to hug him back, but your arms were pinned against your body, so in the end, you just melted into his presence. “I should blow my room up more often.” He said, when he parted from your lips and looked down at you with a cocky, half smile. “Then you should come and nurse me, you know…” this smile still managed to turn your insides upside down…

“We can also just pretend that you need a nurse.” You chuckled. “You don’t actually need to injure yourself to…” another kiss shut you up but you didn’t mind. Now you two might actually had some time to spend together finally. Just the two of you…

Every single time the two of you needed or wanted some privacy, someone interrupted you with some business that had to be taken care of.

You had been longing for Ekko so much by now, that his sole presence was enough for you to awaken your hunger. Of course, you didn’t hesitate now, that you finally had the chance to kiss him the way you wanted…

His tongue against yours felt like the most delicious thing you’d ever tasted as the sweet muscle rediscovered every inch of your mouth. He pushed himself away from the desk and turned the two of you around, so now it was you who leaned against the furniture.

His hands reached under your bottom to lift you up and you jumped a little to help him place you on top of the table. Your heart thundered inside your chest when his lips left yours to start kissing your neck and when his hands reached between your thighs to part them, you couldn’t help but let out a soft moan.

But then you felt something furry brush against your fingers and you immediately opened your eyes to take a look. To your greatest surprise, it was a rat…

“Is that…” you had to huff because what Ekko did to your neck with his tongue felt unearthly. “Is that Mister Tails?” You finally managed to ask your question.

“Uh-huh…” he mumbled against your neck. “I found him in the kitchen the other day and took him in.” He said, now his lips were kissing your jawbone. It felt like he was tasting you like the most delicious dessert on the Earth.

“Is he gonna watch us?” You asked as you pushed his Jacket off his shoulders. Your hands stroked over his arms, feeling his muscles tensing up under your fingers and you immediately felt the heat between your legs.

“He’s just a rat…” Ekko chuckled and looked at you for a second, amusement twinkling in his eyes, before leaning down to kiss you again.

You felt his fingers crawling under your top, softly stroking the skin on your sides. His touch ignited your skin, sending sparkles all over your body, just before you heard a knock on his door.

It was way too urgent to ignore…

No…” Ekko groaned into your mouth quietly. “I don’t care…” he whispered continuing to kiss you but they knocked again.

“Ekko!” You heard Prowl’s voice. He was the youngest member of the Firelights, a boy with a little mohawk on the top of his head. Prowl also lost his parents at a very young age, making him to become more mature than the average kids around his age. He could also sneak upon anyone without being noticed - mostly due to his smaller frame - hence his nickname.

We got recent reports about that monster…” he said through the closed door and the two of you parted immediately to look at each other.

Chapter 33

“This is useless!” Ekko groaned angrily as he had thrown the Z-drive to the ground. Its broken glass crackled even more and additional pieces fell out of it, sprinkling all over the ground. The device’s bluish light reflected on them in a strange kind of beauty. The dust, that had remained of the gemstone shards were swirling insanely, seemingly trying to stick close to each other in the now opened container.

Ekko told you that the one - you couldn’t even call him a human - who killed Ajuna, shot the device as well when the boy tried to make him pay for what he did, that was why it was broken. The boy could have got his revenge on him and get there to be with Ajuna in his last moments if the Z-drive didn’t get damaged… But this way it became too unstable to take him back more than two minutes and Ekko had to choose.

And now that bastard lived on…

But this way, Ajuna didn’t have to be on his own when…

You could only be happy that it wasn’t Ekko who got hit by that bullet but the Z-drive instead. The lump in your throat had become so huge as the thoughts rushed through your mind that it almost hurt you. You felt like you were suffocating as you stood a few steps behind and watched the boy took his rage out on his trinkets and chattels.

He turned towards his desk and swiped all the books and papers off with one swing of his arm, huffing angrily. He even kicked his chair to the ground, grunting. Every noise he made, caused you frown and shook but you silently waited for him to get rid of his anger - until you saw him turn towards the wall. The moment he punched it with all his force, and you heard the bones crackling, your body finally swung forward to stop him.

You wouldn’t let him hurt himself. You swallowed the lump in your throat as you wrapped your arms around his torso and hugged him from behind. He just stood there, huffing heavily, his arms dangling by his sides as he watched his own feet. You knew what he was thinking.

“It wasn’t your fault…” you whispered against his back.

“I sent him out there!” he yelled his reply angrily, trying to break free of your hug, but you didn’t let him. You buried your face into the jacket on his back and closed your eyes. “He just wanted some attention…” his voice shook and your hug tightened. You blinked fast to force the tears back. “I… I keep sending people to their death… And they are willing to follow me! Maybe I’m not good enough to be anyone’s leader…” your heart shattered to pieces as you listened to him.

Of course, he was blaming himself - for everything.

“Ekko…” you started quietly but he stopped you right away.

“What if soon I have to paint your face onto the wall, huh?! Like Ajuna’s…” his breathing got more and more unsteady and after a few seconds, his shoulders started shaking. He was crying… And you let him. For long, long minutes you just silently stroked his chest with your thumb all the while, patiently waiting for him to deflate in your arms. He needed to let his feelings out for once at least.

All this time he had been staying so strong…

You let go of him, but grabbed his hand with yours when you finally felt his crying ease. You softly pulled him towards his bed, and he followed you, with his back arching under the weight of his own thoughts and guilt. You sat him down and sat by him yourself as well, your heart aching inside your tightened chest. You cupped his face softly, forcing him to look at you and you had to swallow when your eyes met.

His gaze was so tired, and filled with pain as he looked back at you - you could see that he was searching your face with a strange expression. You saw that he wanted to tell you something which he held back in the end.

Oh, how you wished you could heal feelings as well.

“It wasn’t your fault.” you stated it one more time, piercing your eyes into his brown ones, and you saw his brows weakly furrow. When he opened his mouth again to speak, you cut him before a single word could have left his lips. “It wasn’t!” you said fiercely, stroking his cheekbone with your thumb. “Ekko, we are all capable of making our own decisions here. You are not sending anyone to their deaths. If anything, you are always there, front row, when there’s a fight, risking your life for everyone here…” you said gently. “If any of us… dies… it is not because of you.” you leaned forward to touch your forehead to his and you saw him melt into your presence tiredly.

“Give me your hand…” you said quietly after a while and he obligated you a little hesitantly. He was still wearing his leather gloves so you couldn’t see the damage, he caused himself, at first. As gentle as you could be, you pulled it off his right hand and he let you do it without a word. No huffs, no words, not even a tiny hiss left his lips as you forced the piece of clothing off his fingers and you first thought it was because he wasn’t in pain, but you had to gasp when you finally were able to take a look at his injuries.

The back of his hand was covered in purple, crimson and black bruises. His fingers, except for his thumb, were all twice their sizes, - you were sure he had broken them…

“Ekko…” you said in a low voice. “You can’t do this to yourself again…” you mumbled, holding his hand like a porcelain figure as you closed your eyes and tried to think of something happy. You tried to recall something, anything that could have helped you feel better at that moment, but your heart just felt cold and it hurt inside your chest.

Your stupid, damned powers… And your inability to fully control them… The harder you tried to think of something positive, the worse pictures came to your mind.

Your parents, Ajuna, your brother’s distorted figure and eyes asking for help, Eden, the injured children all working in shimmer factories, the bodies of the Enforcers lying all around that Jinx ended, Ekko’s eyes filled with pain…

Your hopelessness and the cold were eating you up alive, when out of nowhere…

“…I love you, Y/N…” Ekko said queitly - his voice somehow sounded like he was begging you - and your heart got ignited inside your chest as your eyes popped open.

Chapter 32

The z-drive was glowing slightly in the darkness of the tunnel. The bluish green lights seemed so soothing; you just wished the cold feeling would disappear from your stomach finally…

But the longer you looked at it, the more you could see something was off. It looked like the device had cracks all over its glass - though, from the distance you were trying to observe it, it was hard to tell. When Ekko stepped out of the shadows, you could see he wasn’t alone - Ajuna was lying on the young firelight’s shoulder. He had probably injured himself and now walking was hard for him - that must had been the only reason why Ekko had to carry him, right?

You saw the boy stop to ask Scar something for which he pointed right towards your direction. The huge firelight dropped his head and his shoulders as he started following Ekko only a few steps behind, when he started towards you. More and more people gathered around the tree to watch who came back to the base and you yourself had also started walking towards them, with Actias still in your arms.

It was Ekko’s expression that had first sent a shock throughout your numb body, as he firmly advanced towards you. He pressed his lips together so much, that despite their thickness, they only seemed like a thin line now, and the way his eyes looked at you under his furrowed brows gripped onto your heart…

Your gaze flew to Ajuna’s figure and you could see now that something was wrong. Really wrong…

He seemed so small in Ekko’s arms - like the child he really just was, after all… His head leaned against the young firelight’s shoulder as he carried Ajuna right towards you. He was just injured, right? That was why Ekko had to carry him… right? But then you saw his little hands dangle lifelessly by his sides and you felt your throat tighten around the lump you’d been desperately trying to swallow for long, long seconds now.

When they reached you, you handed Actias back to Scar right away and, your body frozen in place, your eyes met the boy’s…

“Can you… can you heal him?” Ekko asked as so carefully, as if he was made out of glass, lied Ajuna onto the ground and you kneeled by them right away. “Can you try…?” he asked - no, he beggedyou quietly and you were sure he was fighting to not break down in front of everyone.

More and more people gathered around you - Ajuna’s friends among them, all holding their breath back as they watched his pale complexion almost glow under the darkening sky.

You saw that his goggles were broken on his forehead as you reached your trembling arms out to hug him to your chest. You tried to concentrate on something happy but your mind felt numb - so you reached one of your hands out to Ekko. When you felt his fingers interlock yours, you felt your powers activate, but instead of the warmness you usually felt when you were healing, you felt the cold clench of death in your heart, for the first time in your life, and you almost jumped back.

You wanted to scream up with all your heart but for Ekko, you didn’t.

You had to restrain yourself as you looked at him in shock, the tears you’d been trying to fight now all flowing down your face, uncontrollably. You shook your head slightly, unable to speak and even though you knew it had no point to anymore, you wiped the dirt off Ajuna’s pale face. You fixed his hair blindly - your tears blurred the world in front of your eyes but when you looked at Ekko, annihilated by your side, you knew you had to stay strong.

You had to stay strong for him to be able to feel weak just for once…

“Who…” you had to swallow. “Who did this?” you asked quietly. You blinked quickly to be able to see through your tears, but they just didn’t want to stop flowing out of your eyes. You saw that the tears dripped onto Ajuna’s shirt so you quickly wiped your face with the back of your hands.

The people around you seemed to notice what happened. You heard gasps and whispers, but you couldn’t understand what they were saying, they just buzzed inside your ears like a swarm of bees.

“A Piltovian piece of trash… he simply… shot him. He shot a kid…” Ekko grunted. The puckers around his nose showed his anger, but he couldn’t look neither at you nor at Ajuna in your arms. Just at the ground in front of himself. You squeezed his hand and you saw him deflate a little. “He just wanted some attention…” he said quietly and his gaze finally fell onto Ajuna’s pale face. Guilt was glistening in his eyes and you hated to see that.

It wasn’t his fault…

Scar crouched down next to you reaching his hands towards the little boy in your arms. He gently took him away from you and stood up.

“Where are you taking him?” you asked, an unexplained fear gripping your heart. If he takes Ajuna now, you will never see him again… “Scar, where are you taking him?” you asked one more time.

“He can’t stay here…” his deep voice rumbled, and the reality had hit you stronger now than ever… Ajuna was dead. There was nothing anyone could ever do about that anymore… He would never finish Daisy’s tail now. He was so close to finishing it…

Your eyes blankly met Ekko’s. He seemed so much older now than he actually was. And he seemed so tired… You saw the many faces around you all looking at your directions and you gathered all the strength left in your body to stand up. For Ekko…

You saw him watch your movements without a word and when you reached yor hand towards him, his eyes fell onto your fingers. You didn’t say a word, didn’t ask him to come, just let him gather himself at his own pace. You patiently waited for him to accept your hand as you tried to swallow back your tears.

And in the end,

he did.

//A/N.: So after the cliffhanger, I thought that at least I won’t delay the next chapter that much. Sorry if it’s short, I tried to finish it for today at all costs, so here we are now.

Ajuna and his death are part of Ekko’s lore. He does really send Ajuna away to get some food, even though he wasn’t even hungry and the little boy does get shot by some rich Piltovian dude. Ekko tries to save him and end his killer as well with the Z-drive, but when he realizes that his time is running out and he can’t do both, he stays with Ajuna in his last moments to comfort him. I have been crying for a day now tbh. Why does Ekko’s lore have to be so heartbreaking all the time :(( //

Chapter 31

Your heart ached a little when you thought about how your ways had to part, just when you finally had the chance to kiss him again… You knocked on the door of Heimerdinger’s little workshop, he spent most of his time at, nervously hugging your own stomach.

It was that itchy, cold feeling again, deep inside your guts that had been nesting itself inside you for an hour now. You remembered how right after your lips touched Ekko’s, you immediately had to part them - you felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured into your neck.

“Something’s wrong…” you said, making the boy furrow his brows in his confusion. Your eyes longingly lingered on his mouth - the darker shade of his upper lip had become your favorite color. But this feeling - it was too familiar for you already to ignore it and every time you felt it before, it had always meant sorrow…

“What…” you saw Ekko searching your face, probably believing it was him again you had problems with.

“I - I don’t know. I just feel it.” you said and you looked at him with slight fear glistening in your eyes. “I think I’m gonna go… talk to Ajuna…” you mumbled. Your gut told you to go and search for him.

You had already looked for the little boy in his room. You knocked on the wooden pallets of his door, but only Daisy’s dry and old bark greeted you. After a few seconds, you realized you were probably waiting in vain, so you carefully opened up the entrance, making sure none of the little boy’s pets could escape, and peeked inside. The premise was dark, and apart from the animals - empty…

So that was the reason why you were standing in front of Heimerdinger’s workshop now. Since Ajuna always liked to trinket with some kind of a device, naturally, he liked to spend his free time with the old Yordle - who happily taught him a thing or two he knew.

The professor had been staying with the firelights in the past weeks - ever since he came here with Ekko - he seemed to be serious about trying to help Zaun, especially after how the council expelled him and he could see it with his own eyes how many strong people lived here as well.

He was fascinated by the what Ekko and firelights accomplished here, despite the huge disadvantages they had to start with.

You didn’t know exactly what he had been working on all the time, but you could hear the sounds of literal explosions coming from his workshop from time to time. Ekko often stayed with him, probably usually asking for Heimerdinger’s help to stabilize the Z-drive. But you never really had your business with the old man.

Once at dinner, when he decided to ate with you, he asked about your talents and you told him everything, but he didn’t seem to be surprised - in his long life he probably had seen people with powers similar to yours. You decided that you would ask him to talk about them, but you hadn’t had the chance ever since.

His door opened up, and the professor’s face greeted you from behind a pair of goggles - similarly oversized to Ajuna’s.

“Good afternoon, missy.” he said, in his usual, light tone, while he nodded towards you. “What a nice surprise!” he said and opened his door up for you so that you could enter. “What can I assist you with?”

“Oh, I’m only here to ask whether Ajuna’s with you?” you asked, looking inside his room. All around the place, parts of some kind of… weapon? lied around. You didn’t know what it was good for, but it definitely seemed dangerous.

“No, I haven’t seen the young lad since yesterday.” he shook his head. His pet poro was around his leg, checking who was their visitors.

That was not good news… The cold feeling inside your stomach became more distinguishable. You said your goodbyes to Heimerdinger and quickly turned back to search for Scar. He was your last hope…

Ekko said he would look for him outside the firelight base while you stayed and searched for him here. He said he knew about a place he could be, as he hanged the Z-drive over his chest and grabbed a hoverboard into his hands.

“Take care…” you said to his back as he stepped outside his door and wished that, just for once at least, the two of you could have a normal day. Without worries, problems, sorrow and questions…

You quickened your steps when you finally saw Scar standing by the side of the walls. He leaned his back against the cold concrete, and his daughter - Actias - was chasing (or rather toddling after) a firelight by his leg. He was busy sharpening the blade of his spear with a hone. When you got to them, you crouched down next to the little girl right away to stroke her soft, chubby cheek with your hand.

“Hi little one.” She grinned at you with her tiny sharp teeth, but she was so preoccupied with chasing the bug, that she immediately redirected her attention back to it.

“Hey, Scar…” you said, standing up, and he nodded back at you with a light smile from his own height.

“Have you seen Ajuna?” you asked. Your concern was probably showing on your face by now because the huge firelight leaned his weapon against the wall to pay all his attention to you.

“Not in the past hours. When we last talked, he said he would go out to get some food. Why? What’s wrong?” his voice now sounded even deeper than usual as he changed into a more serious tone.

“Nothing…” you said as you hugged yourself. “I don’t know…” you sighed tiredly. “I just have this feeling in my gut, you see? I’ve had this before… Once when I lost my family and once when Ekko got injured on the bridge.” you looked away from him, feeling stupid for coming with silly things like ‘women’s intuition’, or whatever you should call it. You wouldn’t even pay much attention to it if it was the first time you felt it… “I know it sounds crazy…”

“I trust your gut.” Scar said simply without hesitation, his huge palm petting your shoulder. You saw the seriousness in his glowing green eyes and for a second, you felt better. But then, you heard the metallic ring of a fist banging on the huge entrance of the Firelight base and you felt the same old bucket of cold water pouring down your spine.

The huge firelight immediately started towards the door while you stayed back, taking Actias into your hands causing her grunt towards you, showing her teeth again. You booped her nose for which she frowned and got confused, making her little rage stop - you’ve seen Scar doing it countless of time and it always worked for him.

Your steps were unsure while you neared the entrance and when you saw the huge round piece of metal rolling aside, you held your breath back as your heart raced inside your tightening chest…

Chapter 30

“Ekko, let go of me…” you rather asked than ordered him this time as you lowered your voice. You didn’t want to make a scene, especially not in front of Ajuna. Your heart beat inside your throat and your stomach trembled as you faced him from up so close again.

As your eyes met his, you felt yourself getting torn up between your emotions - what your heart wanted was completely different from what your mind had been telling you… Now that he was so close to you again, every single inch of your body longed for his touch and his warmness but your brain reminded you of your pride. You knew anyway what he was going to tell you. You knew that for him, you were nothing more just a spare part; an interim replacement of something that was much more valuable for him…

“Ekko!” Ajuna by your side greeted him gladly and you saw the young firelight blink impatiently because of the interruption. You were only happy because this way, you could pull your wrist out of his clench with one, swift movement.

“Y/N, wait…” Ekko started, but Ajuna also began speaking with such buoyancy, that he didn’t notice the little interlude of the two of you.

“I’m almost done with the tail we’ve talked about,” the little boy went on, jumping closer to Ekko, putting Mister Tails onto his shoulder so that he could gesture freely with both of his hands. You looked into Ekko’s eyes one last time before turning away and silently starting your way towards your room one more time. You knew that he could follow you there as well, but you hoped for some kind of false shelter from the little, wooden door of yours.

“I only need to fix the wiring because now it’s working reversed - but I’ve tried everything already and it keeps getting worse…” you heard the boy’s tiny chuckle as you walked away, unnoticed.

Were you a coward for leaving Ajuna behind without a word? Absolutely… But you still needed time. You weren’t ready to hear what you’d been suspecting anyway… You just weren’t…

“Not now, Ajuna.” Ekko’s voice drifted towards you as you deliberately walked towards the rope ladder by the side of the tree. He sounded way harsher than he should have and you silently blamed yourself for that. He was only mad at you ignoring him and not the little boy. Now he would be probably taking Ekko’s reaction upon himself.

“It’s gonna be quick, I promise! That’s all that is left to be fixed for Daisy to have a tail again and you said…” but Ekko cut him off before he could have finished his sentence.

“Ajuna, please… Just… make yourself useful for now… I really don’t have the time for this.” You heard the words drifting towards you as you started climbing the ladder as fast as possible. When you looked back under you, you couldn’t see Ekko anywhere and you let out a relieved sigh, believing that he finally gave upon his idea of talking to you.

You only felt bad for Ajuna… You were definitely going to talk with him and explain that Ekko wasn’t actually mad with him but you.

You sighed sadly when you were halfway already but then suddenly, you heard the familiar buzzing of a hoverboard’s engine nearing and a second later - you felt an arm around your waist pulling you away from the ladder. You only had time to let out a small scream of surprise before feeling Ekko’s body against yours as he hugged you to himself.

“What the hell are you doing?!” you asked angrily as he was nearing the both of you towards his room.

“Making you finally listen to me!” he answered and the light tone of his voice annoyed you. Was he entertained by all this?

“Let go of me!” you insisted when he directed the hoverboard in front of his door.

“As you wish…” he said, gently dropping you before jumping off the device himself as well. You automatically opened up his door when you got in front of it to step inside and turned back to face him, your arms wrapped in front of your chest. Your cheeks were reddening as you thought, you were trapped now. No silly excuses, no last-minute slip-outs could save you anymore of what you’d been trying to avoid for so long.

“What do you want?” you asked tiredly. Maybe it would be better to just get it over with…

“I want you to finally let me talk.” he said, stepping so close to you that you felt the air brushing against your face that he brought with himself. “I gave you time, I gave you space and you haven’t even let me explain myself yet…” There was something in the way he looked into your eyes. You couldn’t really describe what you saw in his gaze, but it definitely made your chest tighten around your heart.

“I already know what you want to tell me…” you looked away. “I don’t need you to shove it into my face…”

“The hell, you know!” he burst out and you shut your mouth immediately. “Yes, Jinx is and will always be important for me…” he said and your heart twitched painfully. “And of course, I want to help her… It’s like…” he tried to find his words desperately. “Imagine having to fight your brother day by day - knowing that he’s still in there…” you held your breath back as you listened to him. Maybe he was right about you not knowing what he wanted to tell to you…

And now you were starting to feel more and more terrible with each passing second…

“But with you it’s different. It’s completely different…” he changed to a gentler tone as he stepped closer to you and you wondered, what did he mean by that? “I’m sorry for what I said a few days ago… I just… I got so scared when you didn’t wake up for days… I can’t lose you too…” he lowered his voice when he said the last sentence, almost like he was talking to himself, and stepped closer to you. So close, that he could lean his forehead against yours as you stood there with your eyes as big as a pair of coasters and chest hotter than the sun itself… Did this all mean that he…

“I’m sorry for letting you risk yourselves…” he sighed. “I should’ve been there…” he went on but you couldn’t hold it back anymore. Your heart wanted to beat its way out of your chest as your hands reached for his face and you pulled him into a gentle, longing kiss…

Chapter 29

The shadows were getting longer and longer around you as you sat under the tree for hours now. You had been checking every single hoverboard the Firelights had, making sure that the cables, screws and parts, that Ajuna had shown you were important, were all in place and intact.

In the past days you’d been trying to help out wherever you could around the firelights base. If you had to, then you cooked, washed the laundry and fixed up the buildings, but never just let yourself sit in place and think… You had enough time for that at nights when you should had slept, but instead you sat hours in your window and either fought your guilt for saying, well, the things you said, or was so mad you wanted to scream out your anger into the night.

But during the days, your most important task was to keep yourself occupied. And avoid Ekko…

The moment you saw him appear around, you took out your most transparent and ridiculous reasons to just flee the place. It’s been going on for a week now and you still couldn’t get yourself to look into his eyes… Though your heart ached every single time you turned your back on him, you weren’t just ready to talk to him - as if nothing had happened. As if you felt nothing…

“I think that’s tight enough already…” you heard the deepest voice of Scar as he sat down by your side and you realized you had been letting your thoughts wander again. Your hands were working on their own, trying to tighten an already tight screw at the bottom part of the hoverboard.

“Damn…” you mumbled, dropping the screwdriver to the ground by you. “You’re right.” you smiled at the large firelight by your side. In his hands he held a bowl of stew which he reached out towards you.

“You forgot to eat today.” he said and waited for you to take the food from his hand. It was true that too many days went by already without you eating anything… The wooden bowl was still steaming hot so you hadn’t started eating it right away.

“Thank you…” you mumbled gratefully and felt a warmness inside your chest. Scar was slowly becoming like a second brother to you, especially in the past days. The little free time you had, you usually spent it either with him or with Ajuna. The little boy had started rescuing injured animals from the streets of Zaun and asked you a lot of times to help and heal them. When they were in a condition in which your talent was no use anymore - the poor animals had lost a limb for example - the boy engineered them custom prosthetics.

He was amazingly talented but he kept saying that he learnt everything from Ekko. The little boy’s company was only painful for you sometimes, because he kept talking about the young firelight a lot. He looked up to him for which you couldn’t blame him, and also had absolutely no idea about anything that had happened between you and Ekko.

You held the stew between your hands but didn’t eat. You had let your thoughts wander. Again. You probably would have been sitting for long, long minutes and just staring in front of you if Scar wouldn’t have started speaking.

“I haven’t even thanked you for saving us.” his deep voice shook you out of your thoughts. You looked up at him, surprised and you saw his glowing green eyes look into yours with a slight worry.

“You don’t even have to!” you said quickly. “It was natural… And I would do it again, no matter what anyone says.” you thought about Ekko’s words when you said that. “You are my family now.” you added, smiling. You put the bowl to the ground by your side to let it cool and pulled your knees up to your chin.

It was getting dark faster and faster around you as the time was nearing towards the evening. The greenish lights of the firelights peacefully flying around the tree were starting to get more distinguishable among the leaves.

“He was just too worried for you, you know…” Scar then said after a while and you jerked your head up immediately. You furrowed your brows and actually had to take a deep breath to not answer too swiftly.

“Well, he wasn’t exactly worried for me…” you said bitterly, turning away from the huge firelight. You felt your cheeks burn as you let your jealousy talk out of you again… Scar watched you for a while, probably perfectly aware of what you were thinking. He was older than both you and Ekko, he probably was wiser as well.

“He hadn’t slept nor eaten while you were knocked out.” he tried again and when you looked up at him, you saw he was watching your reaction. “He stayed by your side without a break.” he added, shrugging.

But you just scoffed sarcastically - even though your heart tiredly twitched inside your chest. “Probably didn’t want to miss the chance to shove it in my face how ’I don’t know my own limits!’” you mocked Ekko with slight anger but Scar chuckled deeply by your side and that also made you smile a little.

Just when you were starting to feel better, you noticed a familiar figure advancing towards you behind Scar’s back. Ekko was still far enough for you to just leave before him being able to get there - which was exactly what you were planning to do.

“Speak of the devil…” you mumbled and saw Scar following the direction of your eyes as you stood up. “I’m sorry… But I’m not ready for this just yet…” you said honestly to the firelight by your side before turning your back on him, leaving him there on his own. You fastened your steps up to be able to reach the rope ladder as soon as possible and climb back to your room but then…

“Y/N!” you heard Ajuna’s voice calling your name. The boy was walking towards you, with his new rat on his palms he had just rescued a few days ago. He named it Mister Tails. “Where are you going? It’s almost dinner time.” he asked, scratching the animal’s tiny ear with his index finger. You glanced behind your back only to see Ekko being just a few feet away from you.

Your stomach turned upside down in your belly as you nervously tried to be both nice to Ajuna and also quickly come up with an excuse to be able to leave him there before Ekko could reach you. But you felt like your brain had shut down…

Y/N…” you heard your name again, this time coming from Ekko’s mouth and you froze in one place.

He grabbed your wrist and when he pulled your arm you turned back right away to free yourself from his touch. “Let…” you wanted to tell him to let go of you but your words stuck inside your throat. He was so close to you - you felt the warmness coming from his skin and it stunned you. His face was only a few inches away from yours and you could even feel his breath brushing your cheeks as you blinked in your surprise.

You had been denying it, but you had missed him so damn much… Your gaze drifted to his lips for the fraction of a second before looking back into his brown eyes. He seemed tired as usual and he was under himself you could see that. But what almost broke your heart was the begging twinkle in his ever so serious eyes…

//A/N.: Ekko actually had a pet rat named Mister Tails in the game lore heh (but he lost the poor thing and now the boy suspects that Mister Tails has become huge and mutated and is now harrassing the citizens of Piltover with a chemtech crossbow)//

Chapter 28

“Are you being serious right now?” You asked as you had thrown the blanket off your body. It felt heavier than it should have - probably because you hadn’t moved a single muscle of yours for days. Every single inch of you felt sore.

“Yeah, I’m dead serious.” Ekko stepped towards you to look into your eyes, maybe even trying to intimidate you, but you stood his gaze. He towered above you as you were still sitting, but that only made you angrier.

“I shouldn’t have let you go out with the others…” he started again but you cut him off right away.

“Oh, so it is completely and only my fault now that I ended up here?” you put your legs to the ground by the side of the bed temperamentally. It annoyed you that you felt like - after almost murdering you, Scar and Raven - he was somehow trying to protect her… You just wished you weren’t feeling so weak… “You should be thanking me! I saved us this time…”

“You clearly don’t know your own limits…” he continued. You felt your face and ears reddening - you were sure that if he continued saying things like this, you’d blew up soon. “I won’t let you…

“Could you please stop acting like I’m your damn property?!” you stood up to be able to look into his eyes properly, but you were too fast and the black dots immediately started dancing in front of your eyes. You blinked rapidly to get rid of them and pushed away Ekko’s worried arms that reached for you right away when he saw you stumbled. “I don’t need you to boss me around! I - and the others - needed you to be there!” you yelled. You didn’t feel like crying and yet tears of anger burned your eyes as you raised your chin even higher. “But all you’ve been doing is trying to get rid of… of everything! The firelights, your friends, this place! Me…” you lowered your voice at the last word.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Ekko asked perplexed. “I would never want to get rid of you, why on earth do you think that?” He furrowed his brows in his confusion and as much as you didn’t want to say out loud what you’d been thinking for days, there was no stopping now and the words just flowed out of you.

“This whole thing with the z-drive… How can you not realize that what you’re trying to achieve is to conjure away what you have now…” you said and cursed yourself silently for the shake in your voice. You felt selfish as you tried to put yourself into the boy’s shoes. You remembered how happy he was the day he created the device. And wouldn’t you probably try to get back what you had lost, if you’d seen even the slightest chance?

You knew that jealousy was talking out of you as well. You just felt that… that he would be ready to exchange you for her any moment if he had the chance… And it hurt you… After everything… It really hurt you…

But could you blame him? Jinx was to him, what he was to you. A first love, who also grew up to be beautiful, while you were, well, just you… Could you ever compete with that? Now especially, that he realized that Jinx and Powder were still the same person, no matter how hard Ekko had been trying to deny it for so many years… And he had a device now, that could literally turn back time…

You looked at the young firelight standing in front of you and your heart ached. The sounds of people going by their days outside hit your ears, and as you thought about everything, you were sure about the answer to your own question was no. There were people now who needed your help and that wouldn’t change either if you went back in time. You just wouldn’t be there for them anymore…

How could Ekko forget about his own people? So many of them wouldn’t even be alive without him. He was the one who kept telling you that you shouldn’t dwell on the past and now he himself seemed to be completely getting lost in it.

“I’m not…” Ekko started but couldn’t find his words. “You don’t understand…” he said under his nose and you knew what he was talking about. But he wasn’t the only one who had lost everything in one, single day. You just had to think about the mural outside with the countless of portraits… Or yourself…

“Trust me, Ekko, I do.” you said in a low voice. “In fact, I think, every single person here understands…” you saw him raise his head towards you but you turned away ready to walk out of the room.

You felt tired and worn out again. All you wanted to do was just lay back down to a bed and bury yourself under the covers. And just stay there. Hidden from everyone’s eyes. Alone. Safe from anyone that could ever hurt you again…

You started walking towards his door with heavy legs and an even heavier heart. You couldn’t get to him - maybe now was the time to just distance yourself from Ekko. For your own sake. It was obvious that he didn’t need you like you needed him and, again, you didn’t want to become anyone’s burden…

“Y/N, wait…” Ekko asked you and you heard him step towards you when your hand grabbed the knob on his door. But you didn’t stop. You didn’t even act like you heard him, even though all you wanted to do at that moment was just to turn back, hug him and say that you didn’t care if he didn’t love you like you loved him…

He didn’t need you - you reminded yourself as you opened his door and stepped outside with your whole body shaking helplessly, leaving him on his own in the fading afternoon lights.

Chapter 27

It was cold and dark. And silent. It felt so peaceful to just be lost in this senseless nothing. It seemed too enticing at that moment to just stay in this void and rest…

But then your brother came to your mind. He was alone and he needed you. You were probably the only living being in the whole world who could and also wanted to help him. You couldn’t just give up on him…

And Ekko… If you could had moved a single muscle in your body, your lips probably would have curved into a sad smile… Because you knew that he probably didn’t need you at all. Especially now that he had the Z-drive and a hope to change what had been written in stone for so many years. You were sure his mind was occupied with someone else and yet there you were, hoping that his heart would be big enough for two people…

You felt wind against your cheeks but it felt so unpleasant now, that all the warmness had left your body. You usually liked the cold - given the way your powers worked, always making you feel hot. But not this time.

You wanted to gather your strength to force your eyelids open, but not a single muscle in your body could move. It felt like they were desperately trying to spare the energy, you had still left inside you, for your heart to be able to keep pumping your blood through your veins.

The more you tried to use your brain, the more you felt that you were going to black out again. And eventually, after a few more seconds, you did.

***

“What the hell happened to her…?” you heard Ekko’s voice in the distance and you immediately felt the warmness inside your chest. It was hardly there and so faint, but helped you already - your eyes finally moved behind your eyelids. “She’s barely breathing…” you heard the slight panic in his voice.

“We… We ran into Jinx.” Raven’s voice spoke from your other side. Everything echoed so strangely in your ears…

What?!

“Y/N… she somehow protected us… she just jumped in front of everyone and there was an invisible shield… it was kind of incredible…” you heard the girl spoke but it was getting harder and harder with each passing second for your brain to understand the words.

“Why the hell did you go there on your own?!” Ekko asked furiously but Scar’s voice joining the conversation cut him off.
“We haven’t even seen you for days, Ekko.” he sounded upset. “Things still need to be taken care off…”

You’d never heard them argue before. You didn’t like them jumping to each other’s throat for something you did. You wanted to interrupt them, trying to force your eyelids open again, but you couldn’t. You couldn’t even hold onto your consciousness anymore as the voices faded into complete silence and you were once again swallowed by the nothing.

***

You were lying on something soft. A warm blanket covered your whole body that made you feel safe and comfortable and also made you want to just stay and sleep more. The smells filling your nostrils also made you happily soothed. It smelled like wood, oil, leaves and paper.

You heard the peaceful afternoon sounds of people outside the room and the rustling of the branches and leaves of the tree you loved so much. A perfect way to start your day - you thought and a peaceful smile lay onto your lips.

But then you heard the careworn sigh coming from right next to you and you knew you should remember something…

You tried to make your brain work as hard as you could before opening your eyes. You saw that you were in Ekko’s room and when your gaze fell onto the boy, sitting on a chair next to you, his elbows resting on his knees while his palms massaged his face, everything clicked in place. You sat up like a spring scaring the boy next to you.

“Y/N, oh my god!” He immediately jumped off his chair to sit on the bed next to you and pull you into a tight hug. He buried his head into your neck and his presence, touch and brush of his breath on your skin all made you get covered in pleasant goosebumps.

“Are Raven and Scar okay?” You asked. Your voice was hoarse and your throat was so dry, it felt like you hadn’t drunk in days.

“Yes…” he said, his hug tightening around you. “When they brought you back, I thought you were dead… too…” he said after a while. “And then you didn’t move at all for days… I thought you weren’t gonna make it…” he went on, his voice becoming more and more upset with each of the words leaving his mouth.

“Ekko…” you huffed. His hug was so tight you could barely breath. You wanted to hug him back but your arms were pinned against your body - so you just awkwardly bent your lower arms, hardly able to reach his back as you tried to caress him. “I’m fine, but you’re crushing me…”

He let go of you unwillingly and you were finally able to have a good look at his face. The afternoon lights seeping into his room shadowed his features as he was sitting with his back to the window. And yet you could still see that he was in a really bad condition. Stress was slowly eating him up - at least all the dark circles around his eyes indicated that. He even seemed that he lost some weight…

You couldn’t see him like this… You slowly reached your palms out to grab the boy’s cheeks and he leaned into your touch right away. He closed his eyes, enjoying the contact and you felt your powers working right away. You wanted to help him feel better… But after only a few seconds, Ekko’s eyes popped open and he strictly grabbed your wrists to pull your arms away from his face.

Don’t!” he said swiftly. His brows furrowed and he suddenly seemed upset as his brown eyes darted into yours. Your lips fell open as he threw your hands away and even stood up from the bed to leave you there on your own, with your confusion.

“What…” you started but he cut you off.

“Don’t use your powers on me again!” he said and turned his back on you. You just sat there and watched him, not being able to find the words.

“What’s your problem?” you asked after a while of complete silence in the room. The lighthearted voices coming from outside of his window felt so distant now, as you thought how it wasn’t exactly the reaction you needed - or longed for - at the moment.

“Raven told me you almost died because of your powers…” he started and you immediately felt your temper rise.

“Excuse me?” you cut him off. “I almost died because of Jinx.” you saw his back tensing when he heard the name. He took a deep breath which he held in for a few seconds before letting it out.

“I’m sorry.” he sighed as he turned back to face you. You felt a part of your anger vaporize immediately when you saw his tired expression and you wanted to say that everything was fine. But then he went on…

I shouldn’t have let you go there…

Chapter 26

“Oooh…"she chuckled again. "The firelights…” she said, and even though she sang the little word, her voice didn’t sound impressed at all. Your head immediately jerked towards the direction you heard her voice coming from - and there she was. Sitting at the edge of the roof of a single story building not far from you, dangling her right leg in the air as she was watching you.

She seemed unimpressed and despite the slight chuckling, no joy was twinkling in her eyes.

“I was actually waiting for someone else to show up…” she sighed with pretended annoyance and rolled her eyes. “Thanks for ruining my surprise.”

It was the first time you had ever seen Jinx in person. You had only heard stories about her - especially about the way she liked to take care of her businesses. And of course, Ekko told you a few trinkets as well. But seeing her with your own two eyes stunned you for a reason that was unknown to you.

The childlike, beautiful features paired with the cold, glowing, purple eyes sent shivers down your spine. You saw her watching you, unamused and when her hands reached towards her gun you stepped a step towards the Enforcer woman.

“Stand behind me.” you said, trying to sound braver than you actually were. You saw how pale her complexion was, and the sweat slightly glistening on her forehead and you couldn’t decide whether it was because of her injuries you didn’t have the time to heal properly, or because she was so afraid…

“There’s no way I’m gonna hide… Especially not behind someone like you…” she spat the words fiercely, grabbing her baton with both of her hands. “This lunatic have ended my friends!” you swallowed as you looked at her. You thought about how bravery and stupidity probably walked hand in hand in her head as you, yourself wanted to turn and runaway as fast as possible from the bottom of your heart…

You were just about to answer when you saw the movement in the corner of your eyes but by the time your head turned towards the direction, only the emptily swirling fog was left behind the girl. Your heart beat like crazy in your throat and you saw Scar’s body tensing up as well as Raven’s head turning to all directions.

So brave...” you heard the chuckle again, so close this time, you had to jump back and a short scream of surprise left your lips. Jinx was right by your side, but when both Scar and Raven moved to attack, she easily dodged them. She kicked Scar on the chest so hard, he fell to the ground and immediately after that, aimed a gun right at Raven’s head, making the girl freeze midair right away. “A-a-a…” she said coldly. “Don’t make me shoot you.” she said and again, she seemed annoyed. “That would ruin my hard work!”

She stepped a few steps back as she groaned, still pointing her gun towards you and your mind was desperately trying to find a way to get everyone out of there, safely. But God damn it! You weren’t made for this… You never had working plans and couldn’t fight…

“Now.” Jinx said when she stopped, putting her gun inside her belt. She then raised her arms in the air, by her face and put on an almost innocent expression as she started talking. “If you leave her here to me, I won’t hurt you I promise.” her head gestured towards the enforcer and you saw her straightening her back by your side. “My promises totally can be trusted! I swear…” Jinx added, grinning like crazy while she visibly crossed her fingers.

“What’s your point with this?” the enforcer asked as she stepped in front of you. You saw her body was shaking.

“Oooh… thank you for asking!” Jinx clapped her hands happily. “You know they were all part of the plan - that I just made up this morning though!” she was eagerly explaining. “You know, I need to see my sister but she left with that Piltovian filth. Who happens to be an enforcer as well… I thought that, if I made her a surprise, she would pay me a visit… But you showed up instead…” her voice shifted into annoyed once again, when she got to the last part of her sentence and her head gestured towards you, Scar and Raven. You saw her annoyance almost turn into anger before shaking her head and she was grinning again.

“But!” she changed her voice to sound deeper. “Attention, this is a one time, and one time only offer!” she pretended to have a cone in her hands marching around herself, acting like a circus announcer. “You can leave today in one piece and only today! I just need her…” she formed a gun with her right hand that she then pointed at the enforcer. “You know… To finish my surprise.” she shrugged and you just stood there in complete shock.

She was crazy. She really was…

“Oh, come on…” she groaned up. “You’re starting to bore me… Leave now, or you know, die; whatever… I don’t think anymore that she would come anyways…” she turned her back towards you, waving disappointedly with her hand. Scar and Raven immediately moved by your side but before they could have gotten just a step closer to Jinx, she stopped.

“Duck!” she suddenly turned back with a ticking bomb in her hands. She pulled out the pin with a smooth movement of one finger of hers and threw it towards you. “Just kidding!” she laughed a little before her face turned dead serious. “That won’t help…”

It was so strange to feel the time slow down around you and yet, you knew everything had happened in only one second. You saw it from the corner of your eyes how everyone moved at the same time around you, but you wouldn’t have had the slightest chance to dodge the explosion. Your body moved on its own, almost instinctively, as you throw yourself in front of everyone and extended your arms out.

You didn’t know why, you just knew you had to do that.

You kept your back steady as you felt the warmness inside your chest, stronger than maybe ever.

But this time it was different. It didn’t just run through your body but it expanded from you, leaving you to… to shield you?

The explosion seemed to stop in fron of you, as if it had hit an invisible wall and the smoke parted like a fork of a river around you as you stood there, with your arms reaching out as far as possible, in front of everyone.

But you didn’t have time to think about what happened. You felt the darkness swallow your consciusness and the exhaustion drain your body like never before.

And a second later, your lifeless body collapsed to the ground…

Chapter 25

“Scar…” you grabbed the arm of the huge firelight. He stopped and turned back to face you, yourself doggedly standing his gaze under your furrowed brows. “Are there injured as well?” you asked and you saw his eyes jumping towards Ekko’s room for the fraction of a second before looking back at you.

“There are…” he sighed. “But they are mostly among the Enforcers.” he added, probably believing he could convince you to stay by saying this.

“I’m coming with you.” you nodded fiercely and got the hoverboard into your hands. You despised the Enforcers with all your heart, but they were people as well… Plus there probably were Zaunites among the injured.

You hated how Scar believed you couldn’t do anything just because there was a chance Ekko wouldn’t be happy about it. Ever since he - and a few others - learned about your relationship (could it even be called that?), they started acting like you needed permission for anything slightly dangerous.

Ekko was with Heimerdinger most of the times anyway in the past days, trying to stabilize his invention - the boy liked to call the z-drive - furthermore. It worked perfectly; the only problem was that it could only rewind time until about roughly 4 minutes and it seemed that it wasn’t enough for Ekko. You honestly believed he wanted to change the past…

His obsession annoyed you for some unknown reason, even to you. Maybe because you could see him less than ever… Yes, probably that was the case. But you tried to not think about it more than it was necessary and especially tried to avoid being seen as someone’s damn possession…

You kicked the pedal on the hoverboard which rose onto the air with you right away, and flew out of the firelights base. You’d be back before Ekko could have noticed you were gone, anyway. And you couldn’t just sit back while there were people out there - enforcers or not - you could help.

You let the cold, leading wind brush your cheeks and calm you down as you followed the green sparks of the other firelights’ hoverboard in front of you. When you noticed the lights at the end of the huge pipe, you pulled your mask down your face. Ekko gave it to you when you started going out more with the firelights to have your face hidden as well. It represented a head of a crane - he said it was the first that came to his mind when he thought about you.

When you flew out of the pipes, you distanced from each other in the air, always keeping your eyes on the others, while trying to be as discreet as possible. Getting unwanted attention was the last thing firelights usually needed, especially when leaving and entering into the drains. Your hideout had to stay a secret, no matter what. Especially now with the increased number of enforcers patrolling all around the lower city.

But that was exactly the first thing you noticed as you looked down, under you. The lack of golden-blue uniforms shining out of the dirty and worn-down Zaunites’ clothes… It was definitely strange. It was true that Piltover’s rage was slowly fading away along with the aggression towards Zaun, but having them disappear from one day to another just seemed… odd.

You ducked under when you saw Scar doing to same ahead, diving between the buildings of a lane you’d never been to before, but when you noticed what greeted you among the streets, you almost fell off your hoverboard.

What the…?” you mumbled when you got close to the ground and jumped off the device, catching it in the air - still a bit clumsily - and hanging it onto your back. All around you - every direction your eyes fell - you could see lifeless bodies of Enforcers lying on the ground. Each one of their faces had been painted with bright pink and blue paint - their eyes all crossed over with the shape of an X. On the walls you could see the same crossed eyes portrait of one person you’d only met once in your life.

Vi.

You stepped speechless among the bodies on the ground, unable to decide whether they were just knocked out or…, - and you couldn’t decide where to look - to the walls painted with Vi’s face all over, without eyes, or to the ground.

You felt your heartbeat rise inside your chest and when you looked at Scar and Raven by your side, you saw the same perplexity showing on their confused faces.

“What the hell happened here…?” you heard Raven’s mumbles by your side and you were just about to open your mouth to say you absolutely had no idea, when you saw someone move on the ground, just a few steps away from you. You immediately rushed to the woman, dizzily awaking, and knelt down next to her right away.

You hoped that if she was coming to, then maybe, the other Enforcers weren’t dead either…

You grabbed the face of the young woman and carefully took off the mask she wore on her face to be able to breathe. Silently thinking how big of a hypocrate one had to be to come down and breathe in a device instead of trying to help, get the air better down for everyone. You wondered for a second, did honestly no one ever thought about how Zaun’s air was this polluted because the people here had to produce what they used up there?

You tried to put your bias aside as you touched her bare face with your right hand, trying to help her heal faster. The woman furrowed her brows and flinched a little at first but then slowly opened her eyes. At first you could see the confusion evincing on her face but then everything hit her and she sat up like a spring.

“Calm down…” you placed your hands on her shoulders, but you saw her looking for her weapon right away. You were afraid she’d want to hit you with it, but when she finally managed to grab the baton between her hands, she raised it up above her head and looked around herself, heavily breathing.

You saw something - a shadow - moving on the rooftop of a building not far from you but when your eyes jumped at the direction, everything seemed motionless…

“Who…” you had to stop to nervously swallow. “Who did this to you?” you asked and before the woman could had answered, you heard a dry, joyless chuckle above your head. The chuckle then escalated into a hoarse laugh, so maniac, so out of this earth, that you felt all the hair on the back of your head reaching towards the sky.

Me!

Chapter 24

You probably had never felt such physical pain before. The throbbing of your head at that moment felt unbearable, as if someone was hitting your brain inside your skull. Stars were chasing each other behind your closed eyelids as you were trying to figure out what that echo in your ears was. It kept repeating the same word, but you were too soggy to understand it…

You flinched when you felt the arm behind your back and hand on your face. You just wanted to rest and wait until your headache finally passed…

But why where you even in pain in the first place? All you remembered was a blue light, still tainting your pupils slightly in your mind. You remembered it was shiny and sharp, but you couldn’t just grasp what was it.

God, you just wished the pain was gone…

You slowly opened your eyes - feeling like your eyelids were heavier than iron - and the first thing you saw was Ekko’s face. You would have been happy if he didn’t seem so worried. Why was he worried?

You furrowed your brows as your mind tried to dig past the pain, to be able to finally remember how you got to the ground…

And then it finally came to you… you sat up right away, but the movement was too sudden and you became nauseous immediately as the world blurred in front of your eyes. You hit your head when Ekko pushed you away and now you probably had a nice little concussion.

You remembered seeing him getting hit by the shockwaves but he seemed completely healthy…

“Look at me, it’s okay…” Ekko said but your eyes kept searching for the evidences of the explosion, mainly on him in the first place.

“What…?” You wanted to ask what happened but the boy gently stopped you.

“Everything’s fine…” he tried to calm you down. He seemed too okay for the situation…

“There was an explosion!” You wanted to stand up but he pushed you back so you looked around the room still on the ground - which was in perfect condition. You became more and more confused with each passing second. You were sure there was an explosion

“Stay down, you’re gonna fall if you stand up.” He said, holding you down by your shoulders. His eyes were glowing almost… happily? You could see a taint of worry twinkling in his gaze as he searched your face, but he was just unnaturally calm.

“What happened? Is everyone okay?” You looked at him, desperately waiting for answers and he finally started talking.

“Everything is perfectly fine!” He said, still holding you by your shoulders. “But you won’t believe what just happened… I know because this is the third time we are going through this conversation and you didn’t believe me the first two occasions either…”

Wait! Ekko…” you interrupted him. The things he said just helped your confusion to grow.“ Are you all right?” Maybe, he had hit his head as well…

“I’m perfectly fine!” He laughed. “When the crystals exploded something strange but… pretty amazing happened! The crystals somehow - they made up this vortex - of… of dust! An anomaly… Right in the middle of this room! And… and then there was more of me! Several of me, actually, and they were all just as panicked as me.” He chuckled a little, with his eyes opened big, trying to gather his thoughts. “And we all started working together and managed to stabilize the crystal and - and fix the tear the explosion caused on… well, the air… I really don’t know how to put it into words.” Your brows were now almost touching each other as you looked at the boy, becoming even more confused with each word that left his lips. “Me and my… echoes managed to harness the whole thing into one single device. A working device! It was incredible…” he brushed through his hair with his fingers and you were seriously starting to worry about him…

He probably had hit his head as well and something happened to his brain. You wanted to reach out to grab his temples to try and heal him but, as if he had known what you were thinking, he grabbed both of your wrists and gently pushed your arms down.

“You don’t have to heal anything on me.” He smiled. “I’m perfectly fine. I have proof I’m not crazy. Look at this.” He said and pulled the very same container out from behind his back in which he wanted to take that one gemstone to Piltover. “I know it all sounds unbelievable. But I can prove everything I told you is true! I asked you the last time to tell me something that I - or anyone among the firelights - surely can’t know about you and you told me you got your powers after you grandfather!” He said excitedly and your eyes grew double their sizes under your raised eyebrows. Your lips slightly parted in your surprise.

“How do you…” you wanted to ask but he interrupted you once again.

“I told you! You were the one who told me!” He chuckled happily and then suddenly pulled you into an excited kiss. You felt he was smiling as he longingly sucked in your lower lip. When he let go of you, he leaned his forehead against yours. “This is the third time I kiss you…” he said happily.

“Okay, first of all… I want to remember when you kiss me!” You said indignantly. “And the second thing is just… just wow…” you looked at the container in which the dust particles, that had remained of the gemstone shards, peacefully flowed around in the middle of the glass, glowing slightly. They seemed to gather into a shape that reminded you of an hourglass in their orbit. “It’s just a lot… to take in…” you said, still confused.

You tried to believe his words, but everything he said was just way too surreal.

“I think these crystals somehow reacted to the watch you left next to them…” Ekko said. “And that is why it can… it can rewind time! I can literally time travel!” He said so happily. You watched him with the same amount of confusion as before.

Everything he said sounded so unbelievable but how else would he have known about your grandfather? Your brother was the only living person who knew this other than you, but without your help, he probably still couldn’t talk. And you doubted Ekko just visited him to have a pleasant chat about your family over a cup of tea while you were unconscious…

“This thing right here…” he pointed towards his device happily. “It will change everything…” he looked at his own invention and even in his eyes you could see he hardly was able to believe what he held between his fingers…

Chapter 23

“Your bruise is gone.” Ekko said in the darkness, breathing a kiss onto your cheek, just where your brother had hit you hours ago.

“Yeah.” You smiled and he pulled you closer to him, to embrace you into a warm and affectionate hug from behind. “I heal much faster than anyone else - especially when I feel good.” Your head rested on his arm as you lied down to your side, while his free one hugged you tightly.

“What does it feel like, - when you heal?” Ekko asked after a while, stroking your hair away from your neck so that he could place the softest, most gentle kiss onto your skin. You felt your whole body getting covered in goosebumps as you smiled.

“It is warm.” you said after a few seconds of thinking, trying to grab the feeling in your mind to be able to describe it to the boy. “In my chest mostly, but it kind of… spreads out?” you weren’t sure how to say it. “You know, like that ring of wave on a very still surface of water, after you drop something in…”

Ekko pulled you closer to his naked body - you weren’t wearing any pieces of clothing either - and kissed the part between your neck and shoulder. “I think, I can sometimes - feel when your powers are working…” he spoke against your shoulder and you raised your eyebrows.

“You do?”

“Mhm” he hummed in agreement. His breath tickled your skin. “When you’re by me. I don’t feel it all the time, just at occasions like - when I kiss you for example…” he said and you could hear on his voice that he was smiling. “The very first time I felt it - I didn’t know what was it back then - was when we first flew together on a hoverboard.” your heart was beating faster inside your chest as you listened to him talking and there it was - the warmness again…

“Well, that’s new…” you wondered to yourself. No one had ever said that they could feel your powers when you weren’t directly healing them. Was this because you rarely had anyone so close to yourself like Ekko, or because you were somehow getting… stronger?

Ekko’s hug tightened around you one more time. “I can feel it now as well… It feels so good…” he said sleepily and buried himself into your neck. The butterflies inside your stomach danced such a wild dance that you were starting to believe there were real insects inside your belly. Your fingers locked around his on your waist and you pulled his hand to your lips, to gently kiss the back of it.

You felt safe with him. Even being completely naked and the most vulnerable, you felt like nothing could ever hurt you anymore as you listened to Ekko’s breathing slowly deepen by your side. And you also felt yourself drifting towards a soothing darkness, no matter how much you tried to stay awake and just enjoy the moment a little more. You fell asleep.

“Do you think you can use them for anything?” You asked as your hands were tinkering with the pocket watch. You were sitting on Ekko’s bed, almost finishing with the little firelight sign you had been carving onto the inner part of the cover, while the boy was sat at his table. He leaned above a big magnifying glass, furrowing his brows in confusion.

He had been studying the gemstone shards for long hours now - enough for you to finish the fixing of the pocket watch completely. You had to replace the glass and hour hands, plus a few smaller gears as well but your hands were experienced. After you finished cleaning it up you decided to carve the - very simplified - image of a firelight, because, well, you felt it needed something you could personalize with.

“Heimerdinger says that broken like this, it’s not that powerful anymore, but they seem so strange for me… Ever since I’ve cleaned them up, they started behaving strangely.” he furrowed his brows as he talked. “Come, take a look…” he gestured to you and - in your hands with the watch - you stood up and walked behind him. You leaned down by his head to look at the crystals through the magnifying glass. You felt the warmness of his body by your side and it attracted you like an oil lamp attracted a moth.

In the morning he was just as affectionate as yesterday night, peppering you with kisses and embracing you into the warmest hug for long minutes after you woke up. But the moment he stepped by his desk, his concerns and duties got to him again, burying his attention like an avalanche.

You seriously had to force your mind to pay attention to what was happening in front of your eyes because your mind kept wandering back to the morning - and the night before…

The shards seemed to be glowing stronger now than when you found them and when Ekko moved a piece, the other ones started shaking and pulling towards its direction. It seemed that they were attracting each other.

“They behave like they…” he massaged his temple tiredly as he was looking for the right words. “Like they still want to belong together. Is this… Is this makes sense?” You put the watch down to his table and you poked a crystal carefully with your index finger. It rolled away from the others, but they followed the lonely piece again, right away. “Is this even possible?”

“I don’t exactly have much knowledge of these kinds of things…” you said, but then you heard a little, repeating noise somewhere around Ekko’s table that diverted your attention. You tried to find the source of the barely audible, twinkling noise, lifting papers and pushing books aside as Ekko started fiddling with the crystals again. And there it was - in a glass container - another piece of shard that the boy probably accidentally forgot about. It kept hitting that side of the glass that was the closest to the rest…

“There’s one more piece here…” you mumbled as you grabbed the little blue crystal between your index finger and thumb.

“Oh…” you heard the little word of surprise coming from Ekko’s mouth before you dropped it under the magnifying glass, among the others.

You didn’t really have much time to react. Everything happened so fast and yet your mind sensed it like the time had slowed down around you.

The second the remaining shard got close to the others, all of the little crystals started vibrating. Then they span around themselves as blue sparks started shooting out of them, and in a blink of a time - they shot towards each other.

Ekko only had time to push you away as the crystals blew up.

You saw as you flew backwards, that the blue shockwaves hit the boy directly and fear clenched your stomach. But as you fell onto your back, you hit your head onto the wooden frame of Ekko’s bed behind you, and everything immediately faded to black…
