Skins/Pieles(2017)

“In a strange world where people share numerous deformities, the same problem we all face challenges each of them: to find someone who accepts you as you are. Sometimes, that means finding yourself first”

This Spanish film is bizarre. It follows the lives of some physically unlucky people just trying to live really. All of their stories kind of weave into one another’s somehow and that’s definitely not a positive thing for some. I couldn’t recommend this film to anyone who wasn’t into strange and bizarre and totally fucked up shit. The movie aesthetic is wonderful to me though. Lots of pale purples and baby pinks, which I happen to like.

HOWEVER! There is sexual abuse and self harm in it as well. The opening of the film starts with sexual abuse of a minor(age 11). So, that made my stomach turn a lot.

The Houses October Built(2014)

“The film’s plot follows five friends who set out on a road trip in search of haunted house attractions, and find themselves targeted by a mysterious and disturbed group.”

It’s a found footage horror movie and it falls flat. It takes over half way through for it to get even semi-interesting. The acting is poor and the “casual” conversation among friends seems soooo forced and unnatural. The best acting came from a female cop that had about 2 lines in the beginning. There was no thrill here and thrill seeking is what the movie was all about. Yikes. I could never recommend this to anyone. It was just so bad. It could have been saved so many ways but, they wrote half a story and went with it. The ONLY woman in the group existed just to be a submissive tag a long character too and that was gross.

I’ll give them two things though. It was smart when they planned to film(during peek hours of some haunted houses and bourbon street nola) and some of the actual news footage they used in the beginning was smart as well.

Here’s most wonderful thing in the world to me, which really uplifts my spirit: Miami Connection, a movie that utterly failed to the despair of everyone involved in making it, was rediscovered.

Sure, there was a lot of ironic hipsters chuckling at the movie’s odd decisions and amateurish foibles (it’s a first time film, and it shows), but there was a sincerity behind it all, not found in, say, fans of Troll 2, where people liked it because it was a sincere, wholesome, and achingly sweet movie.

You can only imagine what it was like to be Grandmaster (and motivational speaker) Y.K. Kim, who wrote off the movie decades ago, only to have it be found again by a new audience who cheered and whooped for the film an entire generation later.

I’ve often aired my distaste and opposition to the entire concept of the Alamo Drafthouse (movies should be for the poor and lower class, not a premium experience for the upper class and wealthy), but they did good when they aired revival shows of this film.

Remember two things:

  • It is only through the elimination of violence that we can have world peace.
  • Tae Kwon Do is an honorable way of life.
