Amar Gamal is a famous Cuban dancer who practiced the art of belly dancing. 

The basic posture of belly dance include neck, shoulder, arm, chest,

Neck: The neck needs to be upright, the head is facing forward, and the top of the head drives the cervical vertebrae and the thoracic vertebrae to extend upward.

Shoulder: You should open back the shoulders and sink them down. 

Arm: The arms should be opened to the sides of the body, the elbows sink slightly, flush with the chest line, the palms down, and the fingertips stretch.  

Chest: The chest should be slightly raised, but be careful not to get your belly forward. 

Pelvis:  The pelvic position needs to be centered. The caudal vertebra needs to be perpendicular to the ground.

Legs: The knees should be slightly bent, and the knees are in the same direction as the toes, pointing straight ahead.

Foot Position: The feet need to be slightly separated, the toes pointing straight ahead, and the feet need to be pressed down to the ground.

From the appearance and posture of the dancers, the first thing we should know about belly dance is that it was popular in the Arab region in the Middle East. Since ancient times, most people of their races are strong, with obvious facial features and body characteristics. This feeling is even more apparent especially after the Arab woman has applied makeup.

Dariya Mitskevich has a standard exotic look and plump figure. Such an appearance has a strong visual impact on the stage. When she stood on the stage, people reflexively thought that she would dance an exotic belly dance instead of a Chinese folk dance with a fan.

The world of dancing is a wonderful one. You can learn a lot about the culture of a gentile, their history, what makes them unique, and become part of that wonderful way of life. You can create connections with people who share the same points of life and who also want to adapt to different cultures.

As a dancer, you will have days that will be very good and where you will feel that all the time spent in practices and fatigue were worth it. There will be days where you will feel that you do not have the capacity to express yourself in the right way or that you do not have enough grace. That’s not the case. You can gain a lot from dancing. Discipline will be the most memorable lesson. You will not only learn to respect and hear your teachers and follow their instructions, but you will also gain self-discipline, and that will push you to do and achieve many other things in your life.

Do not be afraid to try to learn some kind of dance because you do not have the recommended age to start. Dancing can be taxing, and that goes for all the styles. Each dance has its very own challenges, that’s without doubt, but dancing is for everyone. You might be surprised at how much you can achieve and learn, the friendships you can make and the freedom you can feel. Dancing is quite liberating. You forget about your problems and just immerse yourself at the moment.  All in all, the most important is for you to enjoy yourself and to enjoy what you are doing. The more you enjoy it, the better you will dance and the easier you will learn.

Is there really a connection between belly dancing and slimming?

There isn’t a simple yes or no answer to this question. It depends on many factors. Belly dancing can help construct some core strength which can lead to the figure in the waist area being molded. Belly dancing is another form of exercise. In normal sessions, you can burn more than 200 calories, in some other a lot less since there won’t aerobic exercise involved, but simply slow and steady hip movements and warming up exercises.

As a form of exercise, it means that the more you dance, the more you burn. If you engage in regular classes, three times a week for example, or 30 minutes per day at least, it can aid to weight loss, the opposite of what would happen with only one class a week and a sedentary lifestyle the rest of the days. Also, you need to keep in mind that the basics of weight loss are: burning more calories than you eat. You won’t lose weight with belly dancing if you don’t do the right dietary choices: binging on alcohol, eating junk food, foods high in sugar and unhealthy fats and so on.

Most dancers are conscious of what they eat most of the time. The healthier, natural and nutritious your diet is, the better you can nourish your muscles and have a correct hormonal environment. Furthermore, it’s also important to understand that belly dance cannot compensate for the effects of health and medical conditions: medication side effects, hormonal issues, stress, psychological issues and genetic predispositions (not all bodies will react the same to belly dancing. Some women will lose weight on their legs, others on their arms and so on).

Think of this as an enjoyable and fun activity. Everything we do is related to the brain activity, and if you adapt your mind to think of this as something pleasant, you will stick to it more easily and you can lose more weight than you imagined.
