Marion Lakes/Mt. Jefferson Wilderness | Day 2 | 18 miles | 6/23/20

After a restless sleep at Wasco Lake, I made the short hike back up to the PCT and started heading north. I had a few miles to hike on the PCT on this loop. After climbing through a burned area, the trail remained covered in snow for about two miles around Rockpile Lake until South Cinder Peak, where I turned off the PCT and headed back down to Marion Lake.

This overnight trip was probably the hardest overnight hike I had done until this point, between the climbing over downed logs for ten miles, two miles of snow, dealing with heat exhaustion and mosquitoes, and acclimating to a higher elevation. Getting back into the routine of hiking has been tough and I definitely need to work on my pacing. But all in all, I’m glad I did this route, as it challenged me and I felt very accomplished afterwards.

This trip felt more like a backpacking trip than lasts week trip did. I had hiked a loop similar to this one last year, and as I set out for the overnight trip, I knew it was going to be a hard hike but it ended up being a little more difficult than I expected. I guess I still need to get my trail legs back.

The hike started out in wandering through the forest, with a pleasantly warm morning. As I continued on, the day began to heat up and the trail entered, exited, and re-entered several burn areas, where I was forced to climb over a ton of downed trees. Eventually, I made my way up to the PCT and camped at Wasco Lake, where the mosquitoes would continue to eat me alive.

Deschutes River Canyon | Day 2 | 6/16/20 | 16 Miles

Packing up camp, I set off around 7:30. The sun was out today and the morning started out fairly warm. A couple of hours into the hike, I came across a rattlesnake waking up and sunning itself, it didn’t rattle at me and was fairly docile. The rest of the morning was fairly uneventful, and the miles cruised by. With my first trip of the summer complete, I’m ready for the next one.

My first backpacking trip was along the Deschutes River. It had been far too long since I had been able to get out for a night and I was so glad to finally be able to get out. The Deschutes River has started my backpacking season both this year and last, it’s a fairly easy hike and a nice way to start getting back into the motions.
