A Mission to Better Manage Emissions with Blockchain
Heard of carbon credits? They’re permits that help manage carbon emissions. Countries and businesses receive credits from a governing authority allowing them to produce a given amount of carbon emissions. If they produce less carbon than they’re allotted, they can sell the remaining credits. In theory, this promotes cleaner, greener business practices, but managing carbon credits is a complex process, as there’s no central exchange for trading them. IBM is tackling the problem head-on, working with Veridium, an eco-minded coalition of industry leaders, to manage carbon credits on Stellar, a public blockchain network. IBM is committed to environmental stewardship, and by helping carbon credits work harder on blockchain, IBM is working to better protect our environment and make the world a better place for everyone in it.

Transparency From Farm to Cup
How do you know your coffee is fresh and fairly-sourced? Brooklyn Roasting Company recently collaborated with IBM to launch a pop-up coffee shop at Smorgasburg, a Brooklyn food festival—serving coffee tracked on the IBM Blockchain platform. When visitors scanned their coffee cup’s unique QR code, they gained access to documentation from the coffee’s global journey, such as a Fair Trade audit revealing how proceeds from the sale of past raw beans helped build classrooms for girls in the Ethiopian growers’ communities. It’s an exciting demonstration of blockchain’s power to connect consumers with growers and small producers behind the products they love.

Putting Twiga Foods on the Blockchain
Based in Nairobi, Kenya, Twiga Foods is a business-to-business logistics platform for food stalls and kiosks. Twiga helps farmers distribute bananas, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, and more to 2,600 kiosks across Kenya. But they realized that they could help farmers sell more produce if they gave them access to capital, credit and other financial services. Working together with IBM, Twiga Foods developed a machine learning-powered, blockchain-enabled finance lending platform that is designed to manage and track micro-loans to farmers and vendors in Africa to help stimulate the economy and benefit its users. During an eight-week pilot program, Twiga’s service conducted 220 micro-loans (the average size of each loan is about $30, or 3,020 KES), which helped increase order size by 30% and profits for each retailer, on average, by about 6%. IBM is excited to help promote social good and use technology to bring positive change to these regional markets.

Do you know the story behind your ring? TrustChain, an initiative built on the IBM Blockchain Platform, is helping trace the provenance of diamonds and precious metals used in engagement rings. By tracking components of engagement rings on a blockchain, gold and diamond industry leaders are working to strengthen the backbone of ethical labor practices and consumer trust in the supply chain. TrustChain is initially tracking six styles of diamond and gold engagement rings, so when it comes to supporting ethically-sourced jewelry, you now have the power to say “I do.”

IBM 5 in 5: Blockchain and crypto-anchors will help knock out knockoffs.

with facebook now moving into web3 and potentially onboarding billions of people to crypto, it’s more important than ever for everyone to learn what this is all about.
crypto was built on the idea of decentralization, and as major corporations move in, there is a risk of centralized crypto becoming the norm. this would give too much power and control over to too few people, and i don’t believe it would be in our best interests to see this happen.
