New zine! The 15-year anniversary issue of Basic Paper Airplane, where 20 writers, musicians, DJs, label owners, publishers, and comic artists tell stories of how cassette tapes have affected their lives, for better or worse.

Within: the art of the mixtape, the importance of the boombox, the intimacy of the Walkman. Plus tales of recording with cassettes, performing with cassettes, releasing cassettes, falling in love with cassettes. Nostalgia, subversion, frustration, possibility.

Contributions from: Andrew Barton, Ariel Birks, Karleigh Frisbie Brogan, Aaron Burch, Laura Daegling, Tim Devin, Fukumup, Aaron Gilbreath, Cynthia Carmina Gómez, Jack Lewis, Chask'e Lindgren, Pat Maley, Jason Martin, Sara Renberg, Kevin Sampsell, Gina Sarti, Christopher Sutton, Tucker Theodore, and Alexis Wolf. Cover art by Rachel Lee-Carman. Risograph-printed throughout by Whatnow Press.

In the sea of cassette tapes that is our life, we decided it was time to clear some space and make room for all the new cassettes about to enter our lives. In short: STOREWIDE CASSETTE SALE! Aside from a handful of very recent releases, almost everything is marked down 40%. Nearly 100 tapes (from both our label and our distro), as well as a couple dozen LPs and CDs. This will only last for the next week or two, so get it while you can!

And this is on our website, but if you’d prefer to stick to our Bandcamp we’re offering a 25% discount (which applies to tapes, digital releases, LPs, and CDs). Good through the end of the year. Just enter the code: coldseason when checking out.

NEW HALF SHADOW

One of our favorite Portland buddies, Half Shadow, has a new album out this month. Released on LP and cassette, Dream Weather Its Electric Song is an album of softly psychedelic minimalist dark-folk anthems.

And may we also recommend his other band, Aboriginal Flowers, a wild spoken word electronic project with Raf Spielman of Woolen Men. (He also makes a guest appearance on Indira Valey’s latest album, Yemas.)

SPOTIFY LABEL MIX

While we’re not particular fans of Spotify, we’ve come to admit that people use it and this is not an inherently bad thing. So, we’ve been slowly adding to an Antiquated Future Records Mix. It only covers just less than half of our catalog, since most our releases don’t make it to bigger streaming platforms (for a closer-to-complete picture, download our recent First Seven Years comp), but it’s still a good amount of music. Two hours, 28 songs, a bunch of artists. Listen, pass it along.

VINTAGE CASSETTE GRAB BAGS

For the past year or so, we’ve been doing some crate-digging and putting together fun vintage tape grab bags for all of those who might not have the access to the cassette tape-heavy thrift shops and bulk-tape offerings that we do in Portland, Oregon. Well, we’re sad to announce that this time has come to an end! Life has got into the way of crate digging, so we now have just a handful left. But we’re excited to put some fun, weird assortments together for you.

2020 FAMOUS FACES CALENDAR

The latest Famous Faces Calendar is here! An annual favorite. Paintings of legends from across the musical map: soul to country, garage rock to jazz, surf to folk revival, and beyond. From the one-and-only Shana “Crawdad” Cleveland, from La Luz and Shana Cleveland & The Sandcastles.
