Tomorrow in #London at the #JapaneseEmbassy - let’s help the #cetaceans who are being brutally slaughtered in #Taiji. Repost from @richardobarry - A pod of about seven or eight Risso’s dolphin were migrating offshore in international waters earlier this morning. They were complete and perfect after 65 million years of evolution. As I write this, with trembling index finger, the pod is being reduced to small chunks of meat on a cold concrete floor. It’s outrageous. Enough is enough. So what can we can do about? We can SHOW UP and voice our outrage at the Japanese Embassy in London at noon on Friday, December 18th. If you can’t be there please use your computer to contact the animal welfare industry in the UK and ask them to please INFORM THEIR MEMBERSHIP about the protest on Friday. There are millions of members who have no idea this is going on. Contact the UK based groups such as the RSPCA, WWF, WDCS, PETA, EII, Greenpeace, IFAW, and all of the others. There is no reason why we can’t get 10.000 protesters in front of the Japanese Embassy on Friday. 10.000 is a very small number relative to the millions of MEMBERS of the various groups in the UK. The Japanese government would not be able to deal with that kind of a public relations nightmare. Let’s do this and end the dolphin slaughter once and for all. Enough is enough!

Because sometimes we all just need to see a guy head-bump a beautiful Beluga whale

Note: that is not a lumberjack!!! Most likely it is a domesticated marine biologist, possibly a domesticated fisherman, (you can tell because it has been clothed in wool, which stays warm when wet, so it is is clearly well cared for).

While this may be appropriate enrichment for your DOMESTICATED and WELL TRAINED marine biologist or fisherman, please remember that lumberjacks may be tame, but are not domesticated. They are still wild, and they absolutely will freak out if they see you swimming around in their forests.

did you write this notice for the belugas or

Who else would I write it for? It’s not like orcas care about ethical wildlife photography.

Thevaquita has the most restricted range of any marine cetacean, as they are endemic to the northern end of the Gulf of California.  They have evolved to live in shallow, murky water, sometimes so shallow that their backs protrude from the water.  Unlike many other marine animals, they can also cope with the rapid and extreme temperature changes that can occur in shallow water.

Thevaquita is Mexico’s only endemic marine mammal.  The name vaquita is Spanish for “little cow”, and other names for the species include cochito (Spanish for “little pig”), desert porpoise, vaquita porpoise, Gulf of California harbor porpoise, Gulf of California porpoise, and gulf porpoise.

Two male #beluga at the #sheddaquarium play with a rubber ring #enrichment item. They spent easily half an hour dragging around their pool, balancing it on their rostrums and diving through it. In the first photo, you can see how flexible their necks are; the cervical vertebrae in #belugawhales are not fused (unlike most #cetaceans ) which is likely an adaptation that helps them maneuver under ice. #whales #belugawhale #adaptation #animaladaptations #environmentalenrichment (at Shedd Aquarium)

Staff Report

FRISCO —Hawaii’s spinner dolphins need federal regulations limiting human access to resting areas, but that alone won’t be enough to help them survive in the long run. Along with any new federal rules, resource managers will also have to work to…

in love with this threatening yet promising sentence from some random sports post. yes. step into the water and grieve for your maker for you will become unrecognisable. submit yourself to the reckoning of the depth. abandon hope

What sublime joy, to be able to metamorphose into something completely novel to yourself, what ecstasy to discover yourself again.

At first I was like “That phrase sounds pretty metal if you think about it” and then I remembered that this is literally the plot of a Dethklok song, “Go Into the Water.”

1-Year Anniversary!

Northern Bottlenose Whale(Hyperoodon ampullatus)

…a species of beaked whale that occurs in the North Atlantic, ranging from the north sea to the northeastern United States to the west and Cape Verde to the east. H. ampullatus is a social species and is often seen in groups of around five to ten. They typically feed on deep-water squid and various species of fish. Unlike other whales H. ampullatus does not make seasonal migrations, and spends the whole year in cold water.

CurrentlyHyperoodon ampullatus is listed as data deficient but it still likely faces threats from hunting, prey depletion and pollution (both chemical and noise).

Classification:

Fun Fact: It is known that Ambulocetus was an early ancestor of whales because its teeth, ear bones, and nostrils are similar to those of later cetaceans.
