Meet Claude, my new Vampire: The Requiem character! She’s a Gangrel with a ghoul companion, a crow named Little Thunder. Claude is a 16th century french gal who was turned by a Shoshone man who her father, a fur trader, frequently traded with. This was following her “death” at the hands of an unfriendly arrow to the eye. She traveled with her sire for fifty years, learning the ropes, but has fallen in and out of torpor over the past 400 years. Now she’s back just in time to kick Krampus’s ass for a holiday game. >:)

creativichee:

Here’s some considerations for the tiny little details that can add a lot to a character. Figuring out these mannerisms can do a lot for conveying character traits through their normal actions rather than just their thoughts, dialogue, etc.

  • How’s their posture? There are more options than just sitting up straight or slouching a lot. What’s their most comfortable sitting position? Do they have a consistent posture or does it change depending on situation / present company?
  • How’s their etiquette? Do they hold the door for people behind them? How do they handle handshakes and other kinds of typical contact? Does their language change or become more formal when speaking to strangers? To their elders? To their superiors?
  • In a crowded space, do they get out of people’s way, or do people get out of THEIR way?
  • How do they point something out? Pointing their finger? Nodding their head? A flippant wave of the hand?
  • What are their comfort gestures or self-touch gestures? Common comfort gestures include rubbing the back of the neck or gripping their own arms. Can they suppress these gestures or do they do them often?
  • Also consider the character’s common reactions to common emotions. Do they whoop when they’re excited? Do they tremble when angry?
  • What parts of the body are the most expressive? Do they shuffle and stomp their feet a lot when agitated or excited? Are they a hand talker? Do they have an impressive range of motion with their eyebrows?
  • How do they sound? Do their car keys jingle as they walk? Do they drag their feet? Do their heels clack resoundingly on hard floors? Do they breathe loudly? Do they fidget in ways that make a lot of noise?
  • How do they handle eye contact?
  • Any behaviors they reserve for moments when they’re alone? (Or possibly among family/friends that don’t care?) Do they pick their nose? Do they bite their toenails? Do they sniff their armpits? Or do they not care if people see behavior like this?
  • Apart from comfort gestures, what else do they do to comfort themselves in trying times? What’s their go-to self care? What’s their comfort food? Where’s their safe space?
  • What are they doing with themselves as they’re suppressing emotion? Lip biting, fist clenching, and avoiding eye contact are common methods of coping with strong emotions.

DavidTennantasCrowley[3/]

This is my favorite Crowley. Luscious hair, braid and luminous eyes notwithstanding.

Crowley has an innocence about him in his first few scenes on earth- on the wall with Aziraphale, and here. Bigger expressions. Simpler ideas about a kinder God, who may be inscrutable and infuriating but isn’t needlessly cruel. He’s a demon, but his attitude about it is sort of “yeah, Mom and I aren’t talking right now; she got really irritable when they closed the Nordstrom’s over by Polaris so I’m trying to stay out of her hair for the moment.”

He doesn’t carry the burden of cynicism we see later. This is one is those scenes where we can watch him getting “older.” He loses faith like tires lose air, and we can see it in action just through the expressions on his face. His innocence is chipped away piece by piece, until we finally see him in Rome- where his face is buttoned up and that childlike quality is finally gone for good.

This is why I still feel like his offhanded remark to Aziraphale at the bus stop after Tadfield Airbase was so important. “What if the Almighty planned it like this all along?”

I still don’t think he said that solely to try to soften the blow of everything that had happened for Aziraphale, though that probably was one of his reasons. I think he’d started to wonder again, just like he did back on the wall, what God’s ineffable plan really entailed, because it had finally become clear that a lot of things he’d always taken it for granted came straight from Her may not have been Her doing at all.

It wasn’t exactly faith or innocence or trust restored; if he ever does make it back to any of those places, I expect it will be a long time coming yet. But it was an openness to considering the possibilities that he’d been missing for a long time–to making some sort of peace with Her, maybe, even if only in his own mind. And maybe in the end, his ability to do that is more important than any actual relationship he has with Her.

It’s also a philosophical step back toward the center–which will make it that much easier for him to meet Aziraphale there (“Could be. I wouldn’t put it past her,” Aziraphale says in response, as though speculating about such things just doesn’t feel as transgressive and anxiety-provoking as it used to. As if he’s finally lost the fear that if he says or does the wrong thing, the clouds will open up and he–and/or Crowley, which possibility probably frightened him more–will be in for another scolding, or worse.)

I really hate the idea of Crowley getting his faith restored. Even if God planned it all like this all along the plan remains unspeakably cruel IMHO. I don’t understand at all why that’d make it alright? I mean the manipulation of it all!

Personally, I like a faithless Crowley and a faithful Aziraphale. That way GO doesn’t provide an ultimate answer to the nature of God and it is up to the reader/viewer to figure that out for themselves.

That’s kind of what the previous addition was implying, too.

“It wasn’t exactly faith or innocence or trust restored,” indeed. This is about Crowley, about the starting comment on him losing his innocence/childishness.

It’s about him, not necessarily about his relationship with Her. It’s his opening himself back up to optimism, in general, to a less jaded view of the future. Making peace with the fact that they don’t actually know what she’s up to is very different from trusting Her, or finding back his faith in Her. I think it was meant as kind of a middle ground where both he and Aziraphale can coexist, regardless of faith or lack thereof.

I suppose I was responding to the if in “if he ever does make it back to any of those places, I expect it will be a long time coming yet.”

Wearethefallen.Neverforgetthat.

I think I’ve said this before but - Crowley is so mad at himself for screwing this up.

Like, Crowley is a bad demon on purpose. He does his “irritating prank” temptations and his “basically an elaborate civil engineering prank” tricks. But he’s making a choice. He’s being his own kind of demon.

And he tries to undermine the antichrist but that’s him rebelling against the system.

He long ago decided if he was going to fail at being a demon, he was going to fail on his own terms. He follows his own rules, he does things his bosses don’t understand, he gets confused praise when no one can figure out how his methods are so successful.

Granted, 75% of that is just him taking credit for things humans do but no matter. He’s living his best life.

But just an old-fashioned cock-up? That’s embarrassing. That’s out of his control. That’s not something he can be proud of in even a twisted way. He screwed up and now he and Aziraphale will suffer for it.

And now he has to face the fact that maybe he does all the dumb s**t we love about him because he’s just not good enough to be a real demon. And that hurts, because he’s no longer failing by choice, he’s failing because he’s defective.

All of this. Plus, he looks like he’s bracing himself for the consequences. There’s a thousand-yard stare mixed in with that rage.

He absolutely is. He immediately goes to role-play with the plants exactly what’s about to happen to him, and you know where he got the dialogue–it’s so much more brutal and blunt than his usual rambling style of talking, but it’s exactly how Hell talks. “Just couldn’t cut it.” And the consequences: “This will hurt you so much more than it hurts me.” We’ve seen the Hell-Hound, we’ve seen the holding cells in Hell, and we know they don’t spare the failures.

Oh yeah. This is why I think this particular enactment was Hell-based rather than God-related. Like, I think his general set-up here with the garden and literally playing God is normally more of a Fall-coping thing, but this one ‘therapy session’ is very much more Hell-themed.

Ouch. So you’re telling me that he was feeling like that, that the notion of being punished was so ingrained in him to immediately having to act it out on his plants, that he considered himself ‘dead meat’ two whole days before Hastur called him out on it, and yet he kept stalling on his plans to leave earth even after Aziraphale rejected his offer to his face, twice. That’s… a lot.

This whole show is A Lot.

And I think there’s aspects of both “recreating the Fall” and “recreating Hell’s punishment” in that garden. Crowley’s got a lot of fear and resentment and rage and that’s the only outlet he’s got, so it needs to cover a lot of ground.

(And don’t forget, in the book he comments that his superiors in Hell have a way of making him feel like a plant that just started shedding leaves on the floor which…SO MUCH to unpack there.)

With my own characters I don’t need much anatomy reference etc. so I prefer to have a bit fun with these. I usually just jump straight into doing pages and do refs like this on the side for the purpose of clothing and acting.

Jack is the main character of Half a Knight. An underpaid apprentice blacksmith with an attitude and scorn for authority figures.

hey!

so, in some uninteresting news, there’s a collaboration with hybrid mind market and spike chunsoft right now! there’s a lot of danganronpa stuff (and zanki zero) BUT interestingly enough, they made designs for…Every character from v3′s death portrait! (they’re badges.)

why’s that cool? well, they did fancy x’s this time around, and i know i’ve seen people with death portrait props, so with the three characters whose portraits we didn’t see…Blammo! there you go.

it looks like yumeno has mage staves crossing, maki has crosshairs, and saihara has…idk it looks like someone took handfuls of blood, slammed them in two places, and then smeared some to make the ‘x’. ew. tsumugi’s just looks like a textured pen. kiibo has…wrenches?

otherwise, i posted sdr2+dr1′s portraits for posterity’s sake. hope this helps!

-mod n

EDIT: i had forgotten sdr2 also had fancy portrait x’s….and you can see them all! hinata’s got truth bullets, souda has a wrench and hammer, kuzuryuu has a fancy x, sonia does too,  aaaand…oh wow, izuru’s got one?! nice.
