Yang Liping, Chinese dancer, was born on November 10, 1958 in Yunnan Province

CAAM-CDT* dancers range from preschool to well into retirement, and perform at a semi-professional level. Under our new artistic director Zhou Jinyu, we have branched out beyond Beijing Opera and folk dance to include ethnic, contemporary, and classical dance from other eras.

A recording of yesterday’s recital will be streamed on Friday, May 20 at 7:30 pm (Central Daylight Time).  Tickets are available for $12 at https://tinyurl.com/yv9j9duz.  Recital is a little less formal than our annual Chinese New Year production and there is not an overarching theme to the dances.

It’s recital day!  The daughter gets to be a weaver and show off some her higher level skills (chest stand anyone?).  Since I took an actual performance class, I’ll be playing both the role of a willow tree’s trunk and a mother wishing her child farewell.

See - we are a tree!

Under Siege (十面埋伏). dir. Yang Liping (杨丽萍). 2019.

Famous for her flashy peacock-inspired performances, mainland Chinese dancer Yang Liping took to the stage again in 2019, this time as the director of Under Siege, a contemporary dance performance that blends ancient Chinese narratives with Western styles of theatre and performance. Yang describes the performance as drawing out both the beauty and the darkness of human nature, focusing on grand, visceral imagery to bring the story to life for the audience — her set included over ten thousand scissors, as well as waves of red feathers that represented seas of blood.

Under Siege was performed from June to July in 2019, as part of Art Macao’s international exhibition. An interview with the director that contains clips of the performance is available here with English subtitles.
