Helping to Predict Algal Blooms with AI and IoT

When algae blooms turn toxic, they can inflict sweeping harm on wildlife and humans that enter their path. One type of these algae overgrowths in coastal regions have a name—red tides—and in Florida, they’re such a problem that the governor has declared a state of emergency. It’s crunch time for research, and IBM is helping lead the charge, finding answers 1,000 miles away in New York’s Lake George. The Jefferson Project, a partnership between IBM Research, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and The FUND for Lake George, is turning the lake into a living laboratory. They’re using AI and IoT-connected sensors to power a new advance in environmental monitoring, modeling how bodies of water react to higher concentrations of humans, chemical runoff, and other disruptors. They’re collecting around nine terabytes of data per year, and the insights derived from this treasure trove of data may help unlock the power to literally stem red tides. The Jefferson Project is one of many IBM efforts to help preserve the environment for current and future generations.

With blockchain, ocean plastic has met its bottleneck.

What’s a great way to celebrate World Oceans Day? Honor the people and businesses working to save our oceans. One company’s solution is simple—Plastic Bank is incentivizing people to keep plastic on land by turning it into a new kind of currency. In developing countries, locals can bring their plastic waste to a collection center and trade it for digital tokens leveraging IBM Blockchain technology that can be exchanged for goods from participating merchants. In regions where bank accounts are rare, and crime and corruption are prevalent, Plastic Bank’s blockchain-powered currency offers a secure, portable alternative. With their mission to keep oceans clean while financially empowering communities, Plastic Bank is more than deserving of World Oceans Day accolades.

I follow the “leave nothing but footprints take nothing but photos” rule of state/national parks yeah because conservation. But also because when I was 11 i read a short story about a girl who went to a museum and stole a bandage flake off a mummy on display with the mentality of “im just one person one piece won’t be missed” then at night she was visited by the mummy and it plucked a single hair from her head and then the next night a different mummy took another hair and she realized that there were only so many pieces to her before there would be nothing left and that story was forever wedged in my brain. Anyways leave cool rocks where you find them or the mummies will get you

sdzoo:

The bontebok was once considered to be the rarest antelope in the world, with only 17 left in the wild in the early 19th century. They were hunted by the thousands for their meat and skins, and were nearly brought to the brink of extinction.

In 1837, farmer Alexander van der Bijl built a fence to hold his sheep, but it wound up saving the last 17 bontebok on the planet. Almost any other African ungulate like the eland, springbok, or kudu would have gracefully jumped out of this simple sheep enclosure, but the bontebok lack the athleticism to jump. Lucky for them, or they surely would have met their end.

After the tiny population of bontebok were relocated to other parks, they began to reproduce and thrive. Their numbers hovered in the low hundreds for many years. In the 1930s, a national park was declared specifically to conserve them, which helped them flourish. Careful conservation efforts have helped their numbers increase to around 3,500 today.

For those of you who aren’t aware the Monterey Bay Aquarium is actually a really cool place!

• they are non-profit

• they have a living kelp forest!

• it focuses on local ocean wildlife

• they were the first aquarium to get a great white shark to eat and they are the only public aquarium to display a great white shark for more than sixteen days

• they have a seafood watch program where they promote sustainable seafood

• they are actively fighting against ocean pollution

So yeah support them, they’re awesome and I love them

They also have a tumblr @montereybayaquarium

Loss of wild flowers across Britain matches pollinator decline

The first ever Britain-wide assessment of the value of wild flowers as food for pollinators shows that decreasing floral resources mirror the decline of pollinating insects, providing new evidence to support the link between plant and pollinator decline.

In recent years, there have been considerable concerns over threats to wild bees and other insect pollinators which are vital to the success of important food crops and wild flowers.

Amongst the many pressures facing pollinators, a key factor is likely to be decreasing floral resources in Britain.

The study, published in Nature combines vegetation survey data recorded over the last 80 years with modern day measurements of nectar to provide the most comprehensive assessment ever published.

Pandas and parasites

Giant pandas, the international symbol of conservation, are one of the most loved species in the world.

A group of parasitic round worms are one of the main causes of mortality of giant pandas in the wild, and collectively infect more than 50 animal species worldwide.

Infection can damage the intestines and if the infection reaches the brain and eyes: will often result in death.

Dr Russ Morphew at Aberystwyth University, along with researchers at IBERS and Mr Iain Valentine RZSS Edinburgh Zoo look to identify how this deadly parasite responds to anti-parasitic drugs. More specifically, whether drug resistance is the cause of repeat infections in captive giant panda populations.

They hope that their findings will not only help to inform conservation strategies in captivity and across China’s giant panda reserves, but also that they could lead to improved control strategies to deal with infection in the future.

natgeo  Photo by @cristinamittermeier // Can you guess what is wrong with this penguin? We spent a month in Antarctica on assignment for @natgeo and it was not until the second week that I realized we had not seen snow once. Every day, however, we experienced several hours of incessant rain. As temperatures warm in Antarctica, the weather regime is changing from snow to rain. In the past, the penguin colony would be covered in snow but now, it is a large, muddy mess. Baby penguins are covered in fluffy down and they can easily preen themselves when it snows. When they get muddy and wet, their down loses its insulation ability and as temperatures drop at night, they become hypothermic and die.
As the debate on weather or not to protect the Antarctic Peninsula starts to play out, I hope that the members of the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), who will be voting on this issue are inspired to protect it for all humanity.

Orange Cat Wears Fluffy Tree Hat

…because you speak for the trees.

“UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.  It’s not.”  “The Lorax”, by Dr. Seuss

I’ve been going through some sort of weird internal transformation this year.  This hommage piece is definitely a hint as to what has been eating at me.

Seriously, this cat is turning more and more alien the more I work with them as a “conceptual” messenger…

Anyway, prints and stuff are here:  Society6||Redbubble

The red wolf is now functionally extinct in the wild.

On April 24, 2018, the US Fish & Wildlife service released a five-year report filled with bad news. The single native population of these unique canines has around 40 individuals and is no longer viable. They will likely die off within the decade.

Captive breeding efforts continue, but NC authorities are still blocking reintroduction.

Code name: Team FrogPit

We’re back at it again, mildly annoying the local amphibian population for their own good, so I made some nifty logos for my own team of frog crossing guards.

This time of year is amphibian migration season. Frogs and salamanders will be crossing roads heading to and from breeding grounds on rainy nights, especially over the next few weeks. Help them make it to their destinations by not driving on rainy nights, and if you must drive, keep an eye out for crossing amphibians.

Check in with your local conservation programs to see what you can do to help amphibians in your area~ just remember to stay safe and wear easily visible clothing at night!

Help us clean our Stephansdom! Your change can turn the left pinnacle into the right! (It’s currently VERY spiffy!)

spraybottle and sponge. A long way to go.
