During the month of May 2019, Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI), our all-volunteer nonprofit organization rescued 62 starving California sea lion pups and we are in a crisis situation providing medical and rehabilitation care for these animals. We continue to rescue more starving pups each day. We urgently need fish to fill our freezer so we can nurse these animals back to health and return them to the wild. Fish costs $1 a pound. Our goal is to raise $22,000.

CIMWI a 501©(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to positively impacting conservation through marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation, research and education to promote ocean and human health. CIMWI serves Santa Barbara & Ventura counties in Southern California.

They rescue elephant seal pups too. These babies were rehabilitated and released just two days ago!

If you can help donate, here is the link for CIMWI’s donation page

If you don’t have any funds to spare but can spread the word that is helpful too!

The Pandemic Shows What Cars Have Done to Cities

Along streets suddenly devoid of traffic, pedestrians get a fresh look at all the space that motor vehicles have commandeered.

The New York City streetscape has become a strange, inverted mirror image of the normal world. Suddenly, if you have a car, and actually have someplace to go, driving seems weirdly pleasant, almost rational: Congestion is rare, gas is even cheaper than usual, and parking is abundant. This is the Hollywood version of getting around Brooklyn: No matter your destination, you can find a spot right out front. During the coronavirus-induced lockdown, not many people are driving to work, shuttling kids on the school run, or sharing Ubers home from a Lower East Side bar. Vehicle traffic moves smoothly, now that it largely seems to consist of what traffic on urban streets arguably should consist of: the movement of goods to people, the movement of public transit, the movement of emergency responders and other essential services.

For people on the sidewalks, the situation is much different. Those islands of street-side serendipity where friends once spotted one another and stopped to chat—clusters that, as the urbanist William H. Whyte observed, so often happened at corners—suddenly seem like miasmatic hot zones.

Things that might have only slightly rankled before—the couple insisting on running side by side down a narrow sidewalk, the dog walker thoughtlessly unspooling a long leash, the large family strolling four abreast—are now sources of real anxiety. The usual strategies by which one pedestrian might avoid walking into another, such as ducking into the small patches of sidewalk space nestled between street trees and trash cans, are no longer sufficient. Also disconcerting is the sight of people walking in the street, or in bike lanes. At my local Trader Joe’s, a portion of the block-and-a-half-long line of would-be shoppers (stretched as it was by the six-foot intervals between them) extended into the street, close to traffic, presumably to keep the sidewalk free for walkers.

Moments of crisis, which disrupt habit and invite reflection, can provide heightened insight into the problems of everyday life precrisis. Whichever underlying conditions the pandemic has exposed in our health-care or political system, the lockdown has shown us just how much room American cities devote to cars. When relatively few drivers ply an enormous street network, while pedestrians nervously avoid one another on the sidewalks, they are showing in vivid relief the spatial mismatch that exists in urban centers from coast to coast—but especially in New York. […]

The status quo became untenable when a pandemic required six feet of social distancing between people—a distance wider than many cities’ sidewalks. In Canada recently, two performance artists with a group called the Toronto Public Space Committee drew attention to this problem by building what they called the “social-distancing machine.” It was a brilliant provocation. They used a large circle of plastic—like a hula hoop with a two-meter radius—to create a skeletaloutline of government-mandated air rights around the person wearing it. One of the artists suspended it from straps on his shoulders and then tried to walk through the city, keeping everything and everyone else at a safe distance. In a video released by the group, the hoop-wearer is barely able to navigate Toronto’s obstacle-laden sidewalks, much less share those sidewalks with others.

The social-distancing machine was actually inspired by an earlier device, the so-called Gehzeug, or “walkmobile,” created by Hermann Knoflacher, an Austrian civil engineer, in the 1970s. Knoflacher’s idea was to construct a wood-frame outline of a car that a pedestrian could wear to show how much extra space someone driving alone would consume. A cheeky, visually effective cri de coeur on behalf of cyclists and pedestrians, the Gehzeug was created at a time when even cities such as Amsterdam and Copenhagen—now renowned for their bicycle traffic—were turning their streetscapes over to the car. I think I realised I don’t want romance, I just want someone who’ll value me as much as they would do with a romantic partner and I want closeness, deep bond and intimacy but people are saving certain things for a romance because they see it as something more important than friendship. That’s sad

Here I am with the second part of October’s themed week in “Throwback Thursday”! The subject is always related to the visual band Gotcharocka, but this time we go back to their first album, Crisis, released on 17th July 2013. The album represents the band’s musical manifesto, bringing out the image of crisis as a moment where there’s a conflict of ideas and melodies, translated throughout the whole tracklist. And now… let’s review!

image

-Count down [lack of time]: the album starts with a short track, opened by strong guitar lines; Jui’s voice is soft, but it becomes more energetic, along with the theme, which sees a fast evolution; a good way for starting things. —> 8/10

-Yuujo (Prostitute) [pleasure has a price]: bright guitar notes open up the song, leading up to an energetic and pretty paced theme, mainly driven by the guitar; the vocals are fast and piercing, with an hint of aggressivity which shouldn’t be neglected; a catchy and quite pleasant song. —> 8.5/10

-C U [difficulty of leaving love behind]: the lead-track of the album sees Jui’s clear vocals introducing the theme, with a fast rhythm and a well fit guitar, building up a pretty romantic melody; a nice rock track, a mix of passion and energy, thanks to the distinctive guitar work. —> 8.5/10

-Poisonous Berry [love which hides something else]: the lead-song of the third single with the same name is kicked off by an high-sounding guitar, leading up to a freaking and fast rhythm; the vocals are balanced and accompained by a dynamic guitar work, where the refrain is simple and well fit into the whole thing; a good song, with a really nice guitar solo. —> 8.5/10

-Byousokuai (Love per second) [love lived second after second]: this song is opened by a decise guitar, leading up to a quite sustained rhythm; Jui’s vocals are soft, keeping up a pretty energetic and fascinating melody, bringing up a quite unusual vocal interpretation, compared to what heard previously; a quite good and bold song in its own. —> 9/10

-99bangai no je t’aime (I love you at 99th avenue) [romantic bind with a place]: traffic noise open a song featuring a relevant retrò atmosphere, where it’s literally a lighter’s click to kick off the theme, where a dynamic guitar goes swiftly in a paced rhythm, with seducing and energetic notes; the vocals are fascinating, bringing up a nice performance, for a quite unusual and romantic track. —> 9/10

-Virginity: *already reviewed by me* —> 9/10

-Hydrag [freaking with the mind]: the lead-song of the second single is opened by a strong guitar and a quite fast rhythm, where the vocals are freaking and more rapid than usual, bringing also a bit of aggressivity into the song; a quite nice rock track, with a simple and flowing structure. —> 8.5/10

-Many Merry Moments [joyful life]: this song is opened by a balanced guitar, following up a paced and dynamic rhythm; Jui’s voice is cheerful and bright, working quite well within a pleasant melody, empowered by Jun’s compelling guitar work. —> 9/10

-Qtie [money win over the feelings]: strong electronic effects open the song, featuring a quite steady rhythm; the vocals are piercing, alternated with some choir part, building a song with a quite different style than the previous ones, with a relevant electronic component, but maintaining the band’s core style. —> 8.5/10

-The Lyrical Jet Sky [absolute freedom]: this song sees a freaking rhythm, accompaining an energetic guitar, where Jui’s vocals appear more aggressive than usual, with a fast and dynamic touch making them more appealing; an interesting track, which mixes positivity and heavyness all in a single bit. —> 8.5/10

-Gotcha6ka [ambiguity of human life]: their debut song starts with absurdly effected vocals, leading up to fast and quite paced song; Jui’s vocals are mixed and irregular, along with an unexpectedly mature vibe, making this song even better than expected. —> 8.5/10

-Beautiful Life -Type A only- [beautiful but short life]: the bonus track of the album’s Type A starts with soft vocals, kicking off a theme made of light notes, with a simple and flowing rhythm; a pleasant song, driven mainly by Jui’s nice tones. —> 8.5/10

-Lily187 -Type B only- [ideal world]: the bonus of Type B is opened by rain drops, followed up by thin guitar notes and a soft rhythm, where the guitar takes over the rest within the melody; the vocals are light, almost whispered, driving up a warm ballad, which gets some energy in the second part. —> 8.5/10

Final Vote —> 8.5/10

On 2012 Gotcharocka came out with good propositions and a line-up which gave them an huge advantage within the scene. Featuring members from notable projects, like Vidoll,CharlotteandPhantasmagoria, the band went quickly into the audience’s heart, thanks to a refreshing sound and coloured outfits. The first album Crisis marked their debut in the visual kei world, bringing out energetic and cheerful themes, driven by good guitar lines, but also softer ones, with some experimentation along the road. The album results being a compact and pretty nice musical experience, showing the talent of each member and bringing on the plate an interesting variety of melodies, easy and fit for each listener. It’s impossible to not being invested into Gotcharocka’s musical world, especially after listening to this album. An album for who needs to rediscover Gotcharocka’s energetic and colorful musical world, which shouldn’t be missed.

That’s all folks! See you with a new song analysis in “Lyrical Love”!

Thanks for the reading!

“After touring for over 10 years, living our lives on the road and on the stage, it’s time for us to go chase those other dreams that may have waited on a shelf,” shares Boston post-hardcore act, Vanna, who announced their final tour earlier this month.

Words can’t begin to express what you have all done for us. In keeping with always sharing ourselves with you, we now turn to you to share one last time with us. Let’s make this tour a celebration of every moment and memory as well as make a bunch of new ones with some amazing friends and bands.” The band continues, “Come sing your hearts out and inevitably cry your eyes out with us as we leave a little piece of Vanna on every stage. This isn’t goodbye forever — it’s just a ‘We’ll see you around.’ Our music will be here whenever you need it; we truly love you and we will miss you all. But remember, all good things must come to an end, but all good things can begin again. —Viva Vanna”

The band will be hitting the road one last time for the All Things Must Come To An End tour which is set as a weekend warrior-style tour where the band will only be playing weekend shows. The full list of dates can be found below!

Galerie Polka presents American Realities by Danish photographer Joakim Eskildsen (born in 1971 in Copenhagen).

“One in every six Americans lived below the official U.S. poverty line when Kira Pollack, Director of Photography at TIME Magazine, commissioned me to capture the growing crisis. During thirty-six days spread over seven months in 2011, and mostly accompanied by reporter Natasha del Toro, I traveled through New York, California, Louisiana, South Dakota and Georgia, visiting places that according to census data have the highest poverty rate.

The approximately 50 million poor Americans are a heterogeneous population from very varying backgrounds. Some are newly poor, some are immigrants who have come from humble conditions, dreaming of the American possibilities. Of course, U.S. poverty differs from poverty in developing countries. People living below the poverty line can have physical goods, even work but they are mired in debt, many homes are in foreclosure, and most often, being poor also implies having to resort to the cheapest, most unhealthy and risky lifestyle. Any unexpected occurrence may jeopardize the fragile system and find people living on the streets.

(…) The myth of the American Dream is very strong in the U.S., and it seems people are disillusioned with the fact that it is so difficult to get by today. They said there is no American Dream anymore. This, they said, was the American Reality.”

Everything, from workplaces to parks, could be within 15 minutes of walking for Parisians.

The city is working hard in making itself as independent from cars as possible, investing over 300 million euros in its projects. Car parking lots are replaced with parks while bicycle lanes become more common.

Such a move will drastically improve Paris’s carbon emissions which not only helps in the fight against climate change but also makes the city a better place to live.

Going zero waste needs to be a systematic change! Not just an individual’s choice. China, the European Union and some other countries and counties seem to get the idea but haven’t yet reached this ideal.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Boris Johnson expressed his support for a new coal mine in the North of England. The UK will host the Cop26 UN climate summit in Glasgow in November…

Woodhouse colliery would be the first new deep coalmine in the UK for three decades.

This decision is truly the a terrible one that must be reversed at once. Not only is it detrimental to the global climate but it also sends mixed messages to countries world-wide about tackling climate change, which is the last thing we need in this fight.

This must be stopped at once.

Read more about this here. (Guardian Article)

Yup. Mining Bitcoin sure is bad for the planet with an estimated 37 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

To put into perspective how much CO2 that is, we’d need to let grow 155 million mature trees for 10 years to suck out the carbon dioxide emissions caused by Bitcoin mining alone for only one year.

Half of all the crypto mining in the world is done in southwest China where power is provided through the burning of coal. The rest aren’t innocent either as most of the world still gets most of its energy from non-renewable sources that emit powerful greenhouse gases.

The fact that crypto mining is so energy intensive combined with the sources of this energy are what makes it a terrible choice for our planet. This could be prevented if renewables were used for meeting the energy demands.

President Joe Biden just signed “an executive order to supercharge our administration’s ambitious plan to confront the existential threat of climate change.”

He is pledging a million new jobs in the US automobile industry which will be generated by the federal government switching its entire fleet to electric vehicles.

This all is amazing but he then stated again that he will not ban fracking…

Switching to electric cars is great if your (or in this case the government’s) cars are old and need to be changed anyways. It’s also important that the energy they run on doesn’t come from non-renewable sources.

Is this move doing more harm than good by replacing functional vehicles with new electric cars? This executive order seems at best symbolic and at worst damaging.

It’s amazing that he tries to tackle climate change (unlike Trump who refused to acknowledge its existence), but if he truly wants to help he must do it in an effective way that goes beyond his public image.

It’s official! Joe Biden just signed the executive order that will bring the United States of America back in the Paris Climate Agreement.
