An Archaeological Wonder: Salamis

Salamis, Northern Cyprus

I had the opportunity to explore these amazing ruins while traveling around Cyprus.  You can wander around the archaeological site and easily imagine the bustling city it once was.  Salamis became the ancient capital of Cyprus as far back as 1100 BC and was occupied by a number of civilizations.  The site is approximately one square mile.  Parts of the site were built by Trajan and Hadrian, particularly after an earthquake in 76 AD.  The Romans built baths, mosaics, etc.  The city was destroyed by an invasion around 674 AD, forcing the occupants to the area around Famagusta.  The site was looted constantly until 1952 until 1952, when excavations by the Department of Antiquities began.  Personally, I think this site should be designated as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Making our signature Danae Lampshade. This pattern with inwoven native cane is inspired by Cypriot traditional Asproploumia fabrics. The resulting design evokes Classical Greece.

Currently writing a book based on the Fyti village textile heritage. Fyti weaves, are some of the most characteristic designs of Cyprus, combining vivid colours with geometric shapes. This effort will document traditional weaving patterns and techniques of the area, preserving them before they are lost throughout time.

Despite the lockdown our looms are weaving in full force. Here is one our oldest loom made locally in Kaimakli. The original owners would have been quite proud to see that their looms are still going strong.

A variety of floor cushions are now available to shop online.

This handwoven piece is inspired by Turkish traditional textile designs with vibrant colours that brighten up any room.

Preparing a custom curtain based on the white Arete shawl. A striped pattern textured with loops, twisted warp threads and interlaced net-like structures.

The completed piece will consist of four such parts connected.

Since we are going through another lockdown the showroom is closed but orders can be placed through the website. Link in bio.
