I’m planning a new DND campaign and I’m gonna chuck an ancient dragon at my players. Should be fun, right?
Yo- so- I’ve been doing some thinking recently. Specifically about what ways in TTRPGs geography would/should/does effect the prevalence and manifestation of magic.
Like we all get druids hang out in the woods- clerics are around temples- wizards have towers and schools and all that jazz in some classic fantasy. That just sorta scratches the surface of what I’m thinking about though. And to a certain extent this idea has been considered by the Circle of the Land Druids but id like to explore it further.
For example- let’s us, you and I- look at the Tempest Cleric. It makes sense to me that the storm gods are prayed to more heavily in costal regions and so it tracks to me that in port towns or seaside villages the most common/largest/best kept temples would be staffed by Tempest Clerics. And that when a ship goes out to sea they either get blessed by a stormy priest or even bring one along both to keep wind up and in the sails and to prevent shipwrecking storms from arising.
I think this train of though kinda continues to track with other classes too. I would posit that rural or more isolated communities would be more likely to have a sorcerer or warlock as arcane casters than a wizard just based on access to fancy magical education. It’s way easier to make a deal with a hag for some good good magic then it is to move your ass a thousand miles just to be the man who went to wizard school. AAAAND think through this with me- I would argue it is more beneficial for a village to have an in with a hag than one good wizard- help protect your crops in the fall, maybe get a milder winter, maybe your village livestock never really seems to have issues with predators. No good ol’ wizard is really gonna be able to do that.
On the subject of arcane nerds however I think some schools of magic would be more popular foci of study in different areas. A rural wizard might practice divination to find the ideal time for planting and how late you can leave crops in before the seasons change. An urban wizard might be more inclined towards abjuration or evocation- two schools where they city they live in might be more interested in employing them for defense or what not.
I dunno if all this makes sense to anyone else but I’ve really been thinking about it a lot recently and wanted to throw it on out there.

-My DM
The greatest summary of Christianity I’ve ever heard
“Make a purrception check.”
YO I think we as a DnD community need to address the fact that when PCs flirt with NPCs they put the DM in the position of having to play that NPC and not all DMs are comfortable with that all the time and it shouldn’t be an expectation that the DM is comfortable playing NPCs that are being flirted with
I think that is something that you should talk about as a group before playing. In our group we allow npcs and PCs to have romantic interactions but we have respect for each other.
If someone is not comfortable we don’t push it. We don’t get graphic or cross lines with players or DMs that are not ok with it. If you are in a group that doesn’t respect your boundaries talk to them about it. If they don’t listen it is time to find another group.
I am a female Dm with a group of all males(one is my boyfriend of 10 years) all but 1 player has a romantic interest NPC. None of them have ever crossed my boundaries or made me (or my boyfriend) uncomfortable. Other DMs have no npcs that have romantic interest in the players. If you are clear about what you want from the game and what is allowed I find there is rarely a problem with a good group.
You don’t know real power until you have a Deck of Many Things in your inventory
Guys, this is a joke
I’m seeing my posts everywhere now and every time my friend finds one she sends it to me and we have a good little giggle
Y'all ever completely skip over combat because your Druid decided to become Goblin Jesus?
DMs, how traumatized are your players? because two of mine just watched the new season of stranger things and both frantically messaged me separately saying ”I just had flashbacks to the campaign”
Also, they said that apparently I have given them such nightmares over my campaign that they literally saw the new season, and couldn’t help but constantly think ”Oh my gah, thats exactly like what happened in xyz event” and it has helped them continue to theorize over the plot of my campaign. But little do they know my like of thought for their campaign is thinner than a grain of cheese and loosely held together by a fishbone of a main plot.
Nothing brings me more joy than watching my rules lawyer player become feral trying to figure out how my homebrew monsters and entire world function. Yes, the scary monster I created is killable, no sorry, a nat 20 doesn’t hit or affect it. A low-level cantrip will automatically one-hit KO it tho.
Yes, I killed off the god of time in my original world. Yes, this does have consequences. Sorry, not in any of the main books though.
Being a DM is so funny, especially one that improvs 90% of the campaign, because my players built a conspiracy wall surrounding the overarching plot, and I don’t even remember saying half the stuff they put up on this wall. But then they look at me like lost puppies and I just smile and throw my thumbs up like “hey yeah, good job sport!” then turn and rapidly wonder when I even unintentionally foreshadowed big bad evil guy in game. Like they were saying “this was a genius use a foreshadowing in the way of using the title of this loose book - of which I definitely made up on the spot - to hint at our future villains!” And I just have to sit there sweating bullets like “haha yeah, man that’s good. Yep. Totally meant that.”
Examples: I mentioned off hand that the god of the void/nothing in my world is like a black hole, as like a cool world building fact, and they connected this small cool fact to like half the campaign. Cool stuff, but like???? I just like blackholes????
My NPC children for a Pathfinder campaign I’m running. Can’t wait to introduce these fools
4 questions
Background: We found an old man who was resurrected in his fishing, and we were asking him questions. Here’s how it went.
Me(bard): “Sir? Are you ok?”
Old Man: *raspy* “No…”
Rogue: “Is it because I stabbed you in your heart?”
Old Man: *raspy* “No…”
Rogue: “How did you die?”
Old Man: “I died of a heart attack.”
Me(bard): *starts to ask if the man saw a crazy woman when he was resurrected, but decides to be polite* “Would you like some water?” *thought his voice would be less raspy*
Old Man: *raspy* “Yes, I would.”
Dm: “Then, he falls over, the last bit of life draining out of him.”
All of us: “wHAT?!”
Dm: *laughing hysterically* “You guys had 4 questions, it’s not my fault you asked dumb ones!”
Rogue: “He wants water? Fine.” *Throws the dead old man’s body into the ocean*
