Otherworldly Patron: The Djinn

Here is a thing I made for my current campaign. DM liked it so much that he is planning an NPC based on it.

Otherworldly Patron: The Djinn

Your patron is a powerful being from the Elemental Plane of Air. Perhaps you came across their lamp and freed them or a Wish gone awry but now you have bound yourself to the ancient djinn. Your pact with this being allows you to taste the servitude and the barest touch of the phenomenal cosmic power that the djinn embodies. Magic that can bend reality and shape fate being their specialty.

In invoking this pact with a djinn you gain a djinn vessel that can be used as your arcane focus. This magic item can take the shape of a lamp, orb, a jewel, a small item, or pact weapon . You can use your bonus action to summon your vessel to your empty hand. Your vessel reappears on your person if it is more than 5 feet away from you for one round or more. If the vessel is ever destroyed you can perform a ritual over the course of 1 hour, which can be done during a short rest. After the ritual, the vessel returns to your possession.

Djinn Features

Warlock Level

Feature

  • 1st Level    A Whole New World
  • 6th Level    Made You Look
  • 10th Level  Brand of Magic That Never Fails
  • 14th Level  Phenomenal Cosmic Powers

Expanded spell list

The Djinn patron lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.

Djinn Expanded Spells

SPELL LEVEL

  1. Thunderwave, Zephyr Strike
  2. Alter Self, Phantasmal Force
  3. Blink, Call Lightning
  4. Banishment, Otiluke’s Resilient Sphere
  5. Conjure Elemental, Seeming

A Whole New World

Starting at 1st level, you learn the Minor Illusion and Lightning Lure cantrip and they do not count towards your cantrips known. You speak Primordial.

Additionally, Elementals have difficulty harming you. If an elemental targets you directly with an attack or a harmful spell, that creature must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC (an elemental needn’t make the save when it includes you in an area effect, such as the explosion of fireball). On a failed save, the creature must choose a new target or forfeit targeting someone instead of you, potentially wasting the attack or spell. On a successful save, the creature is immune to this effect for 24 hours. An elemental is also immune to this effect for 24 hours if you target it with an attack or a harmful spell.

Made You Look

Starting at the 6th level, when a creature makes an attack roll against you, you can use your reaction to gain resistance to damage, and have advantage on Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution saving throws until the beginning of your next turn. As you take on an intangible form that shifts between physical and gaseous.  Afterwhich, you can fly up to ten feet away without provoking opportunity attacks.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Brand of Magic That Never Fails

Starting at 10th level, you are under the permanent effect of Feather Fall unless you choose otherwise. You also gain resistance to lightning damage and when you cast a spell that deals thunder or lightning damage, you can add your Charisma modifier to one thunder or lightning damage roll of that spell against one of its targets.

Phenomenal Cosmic Powers

Starting at the 14th level, you gain the ability to cast Wish at a lesser capacity once per day.

Wish is the mightiest spell a mortal creature can cast. By simply speaking aloud, you can alter the very foundations of reality in accord with your desires. For you, the only use of this spell is to duplicate any other spell of 6th level or lower. You don’t need to meet any requirements in that spell, including costly components. The spell simply takes effect.

Alternatively, you may use this ability to gain one additional Mystic Arcanum usage for the day for the level you currently have access to.

Eldritch Invocations

Never Again See the Light of Day

Prerequisite: 5th Level Djinn Patron, Pact of the Blade feature

Once per turn when you hit a creature with a melee attack,  you can attempt to banish the creature into your djinn vessel. The target will make a Charisma Saving Throw, on a failure they are trapped within the vessel until the end of your next turn. After which they will reappear within 5 feet of your current location. They cannot interact with anything within the vessel and are aware of what happens outside. Alternatively, if a creature  is willing, no attack roll is necessary to bring a creature into the vessel. If you attempt to throw the prison away before they are freed, the creature will automatically appear in a safe space within 5 feet.

You can use the banishing feature up to your charisma modifier (a minimum of 1) per long rest

Itty Bitty Living Space

Prerequisite: Djinn Patron, Pact of the Tome feature

Your patron has created an extradimensional space within the djinn vessel and allowed you access. At will, you can access items within as though it is a bag of holding. Additionally, you may enter this space. While inside you can create and summon items and the space takes whatever form you like. Summoned items cannot exist outside of the vessel but you can store and retrieve items at will.

Attacks and spells can’t cross through the entrance into or out of the extradimensional space, but you can see out of it as if through a 3-foot-by-5- foot window. The vessel’s complete destruction expels you and items deals 4d6 force damage to you. If expelled, you fall prone in an unoccupied space outside its last location.

Here’s Your Cracker

Prerequisite: 5th level, Djinn Patron

You can cast Create Food and Water (can create wine instead of water) without expending a spell slot. You regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest.

Friend Like Me

Prerequisite: 7th Level, Djinn Patron, Pact of the Chain feature

You can replace your familiar with a Flying Carpet familiar.

Flying Carpet

Medium construct, unaligned

  • Armor Class 12
  • Hit Points 33 (6d10+3)
  • Speed 10 ft., fly 40 ft.

STR        DEX       CON         INT        WIS     CHA

  Damage Immunities Poison, Psychic

  • Condition Immunities Blinded, Charmed, Deafened, Paralyzed, Petrified, Poisoned
  • Senses Blindsight 60 Ft. (Blind Beyond This Radius), Passive Perception 10
  • Languages Understands the languages of its creator but can’t speak
  • Challenge 1 (200 XP)
  • Antimagic Susceptibility. The carpet is incapacitated while in the area of an antimagic field. If targeted by dispel magic, the carpet must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against the caster’s spell save DC or fall unconscious for 1 minute.
  • Damage Transfer. While it is grappling a creature, the carpet takes only half the damage dealt to it, and the creature grappled by the carpet takes the other half.
  • False Appearance. While the carpet remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from a normal carpet..
  • Fly. The carpet is 4x6 foot and has carrying capacity of 400 lbs. For the purposes of mounting, it is considered a large creature. The carpet can carry up to twice this weight but it flies at half speed if it carries more than its normal capacity.

Actions

  • Smother. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., medium or smaller creature. Hit: (2d6+3) bludgeoning damage. On Hit: The creature is grappled escape DC 13 Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, blinded, and at risk of suffocating, and the carpet can’t smother another target. In addition, at the start of each of the target’s turns, the target takes 10 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning dmg

Someone suggested a new Sorcerer subclass and something came to me. All the time Tieflings become Warlocks because of their +2 to Charisma and The Fiend Patron. What if instead of having to sell their souls for power, their power just comes from within? So, with that in mind I came up with this.

I didn’t want to limit it to only Tieflings, but it seems like the most obvious race to choose with this. Have fun.

An Earth Trans in Urtrament, Chapter 6

Ok, I finally decided to cut the chapter I’m working on off at the point I felt like was the natural break point, and chapter length be damned. It’s shorter than previous chapters, but still seven-ish Google Doc pages, so it’s not like it’s a stub of a chapter or anything.

This chapter moves towards the smutty part of my intention with this fic, but is still SFW.

Chapter 7 may take less time than this one did, even if it’s longer, because what will be chapter 7 was originally part of this chapter, and so I already have a good bit written past where it felt like it was right to cut off chapter 6. But I’m still working on it, so I don’t know when it will go up. We’ll see.

Enjoy Chapter 6, and if you like it, please like and reblog the post.

Chapter 6: Crazy, Stupid and Dangerous

It’s a few hours before I hear from Mez’gin again, during which time, I go back over the scrolls and my notes, and write out an actual spell, first on scratch paper, then copied into my spell tome. I run out and buy some spell reagents while waiting, and ask around the Derelict dining room where a good place for an experimental summoning would be around Marsti. It takes a few tries, and people who want to know what I’m working on that I have to convince it’s better if they wait till I know whether it’ll work, but I’m told about a reasonably safe, concealed place on the banks of the river that would be suitable.

Mez’gin messages me around half past ten, and appears outside of the Derelict just a few minutes later. “Ok,” she says, “lets see what you’ve put together.”

I guide her to my room, and lay out my notes and the final spell so she can take a look at them. She examines everything for another hour or so, but eventually concedes that it looks like it should work.

“I’m still not sure you’ll be able to reach into your world, but… I don’t think you’re going to kill yourself doing this. Do you have a place to cast it? Please tell me you’re not planning on using this room.”

I’m pretty ambivalent about halflings and gnomes. I don’t hate them, I just don’t care. And they feel redundant in a setting that isn’t incredibly generic. Like, sure, if you’re doing a setting where anything goes, then, why not. Why not have two short pc races that are so similar they might as well be two cultures of the same species.

But if I’m making my own, specific, setting, I don’t see the need to have either halflings or gnomes, let alone both, because, at least flavor-wise, they amount to “3’ tall humans/elves/dwarves.”

(not to mention how often gnomes feel uncomfortably like antisemitic stereotypes.)

But I understand that there should, generally, be at least one small race that is well suited to being a rogue.

So, in my horror fic-inspired D&D setting, Zichduszek, I created the niflings. The major PC races in Zichduszek were made from humans who were corrupted by otherworldly powers. Dwarves were made into the perfect mine slaves by dragons, elves are the result of the fae messing with humans through changelings and seduction and kidnapping to the fae realms, orcs were created by infernals to be their blood hounds for souls. So, niflings are the result of humans being corrupted by The Shadow, most notably, through children getting lost in areas corrupted by it. They’re broadly halflings, but with grey skin and a connection to darkness. After reaching adulthood, niflings only age in light, and can theoretically live forever if they stay out of it. They can see in any form of darkness and are magically adept at hiding in it.

So working on Urtrament, I had no intention or interest in including halflings or gnomes. Initially, I didn’t really want anything even similar to them, and created Raggamoffyns to fill the “short and sneaky” mechanical niche, after a twitter thread joking about how muppets reproduce.

But as I’ve been working on my story, I realized I wanted an npc to be in that sort of halfling/gnome mold. And not a Raggamoffyn, since I’d already put two raggamoffyn npcs in and a third would have made it seem like the city was just bursting with raggamoffyns.

(actually, thinking about it, Marsti probably does have a comparatively high raggamoffyn populace, since they’re spooky and it’s the closest town to the necromancy college, making it fairly tolerant of spooky people, but still. It didn’t feel like a place for another raggamoffyn character)

So I started thinking about what Urtrament’s short arse race was, looking at pages for gnomes and halflings on tvtropes and Wikipedia to sort of get some understanding of their history in fantasy lit and games, and started figuring out what I wanted with some other influences.

Initially, the only real ideas I had were “I like the cannibal halflings from Book of Vile Darkness, and the dinosaur-riding nomad halflings from Eberron.” One thing I was thinking about was making trolls my setting’s short arse race, drawing a little on Glorantha and troll myths, but I didn’t want to cause confusion, since this is still D&D, and I’d sort of already established trolls as being typical D&D trolls (yes, the Things Proq is Not Allowed to Do post is canon for my setting).

I like hyenas, and so seeing either an Hourly Hyenas tweet or some other mention of them made me start thinking about making the short arse race hyena-like. But again, that could cause confusion with gnolls, and rewriting gnolls to be a pc-viable short arse race would also cause confusion.

So, instead, I made Gnomolls, taking these ideas together and making something unique. They’re obligate carnivores, so they have touches of the BOVD jerron, and they have some hyena-like traits, as well as some goat traits. They’re more specifically fae-connected.

And while I was writing up the physical description in my setting doc, it felt familiar, but I couldn’t really place it, other than “they’re maybe a little satyr-like.”

Lying in bed last night, it occurred to me what they sounded so similar to.

There’s a piece of tiefling art for Pathfinder, a tiefling who is obviously from halfling or gnome lineage, but with cloven hooves and short horns, and I think a tail.

I can’t for the life of me find this picture, but it’s a thing and Gnomolls are basically that guy, at least physically. They’re not tieflings, that’s teufils, but, I do recognize that they could be mistaken for them.

I KEEP FORGETTING I HAVE ART TO POST anyways here’s Full Power Ama but I don’t like her design that much so I’m probably gonna redo it lol

In honor of our D&D party finally choosing a team name after [checks notes] 10 months of playing, here is some spotify album art for the shared party playlist. Here they are, the Gold Standard!

[ID: A drawing showing the silhouettes of a group of five people in gold against a black background. From left to right, there is a tall man with long hair holding a trident, a short and stocky woman with fur over her shoulders, a slightly taller woman with an afro and a star near her head, a tall man with a single dangling earring and a spear at his back, and a tiefling woman in profile with her hand on her hip. Above each of their heads is a different symbol, outlined in gold: a trident with rays coming from the tips, an abstracted wave, a crescent moon next to a star, a pomegranate with leaves beneath it, and a feather, respectively. Halfling video games: What appears on the surface to be a viscerally calming farming sim is actually an extraordinarily complex social combat game about cutthroat HOA politics.

Goblin video games: Wildly unbalanced collectathon gatchas where half the fun is finding new hilariously broken strategies. Zany uberviolent team shooters about bugs. MOBAs so bad it’s almost art.

Orc video games: Addictive in-browser flash games with names like “Beast Crush 4” and “Borag Meat Game.” The art is always kinda bad but in a charming way. The music always slaps.

Goblin code looks incomprehensible but if you take the time to look through it, you realize it’s actually optimized in ways you never thought were even possible. Goblins are responsible for like 75% of every games modding community. Goblins all run Linux.

This weeks video was on the Vonindod, the mighty weapon of the giants. I planned this video a while ago and coincidentally Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance released some more lore for this weapon so I was happy.
