I went to the G7 summit (to protest)

Hello to all activists and acti-curious peeps, as well as everyone else who cares about the planet. Last weekend I went to Cornwall as part of XR (Extinction Rebellion), where the G7 summit was taking plact, to protest world leaders’ complacent inaction on the climate crisis. Sadly, G7 leaders are failing us on climate change, and we are #DrowningInPromises.

This video is a collection of highlights from those two days. There are bits of talks by activists including Marvina Newton, as well as mini-interviews with rebels that I filmed myself. If you are curious what an XR protest is really like and/or want to learn more, check it out!

Bad things are happening in the UK. I made a video about the situation and how to fight against it.

Essentially, the government is trying to push through a bill that will effectively ban all protest. This is a human rights violation, although they insist that it’s not.

You could get a prison sentence of up to 10 years for any protest-related action that the Home Secretary Priti Patel deems “impactful” or “causing serious annoyance”, such as sitting in a road, spray-painting a monument or making too much noise.

Furthermore, the proposed bill gives the Home Secretary the power to amend the law afterwards without parliamentary approval. This gives her unprecedented control over any and all protest and is dangerous for democracy.

In this video I discuss the bill, why it is so sinister and how we can fight against it. If you found this video helpful, please share it with others and encourage them to act! Share with your UK friends!

I’ve made a list of resources you can use, including MP email templates. I will be updating it with new info as the situation changes.

As of now (March 16th 2021, 22:38), the bill has passed its Second Reading, meaning that it will now be scrutinised and amendments will be proposed. If you are in the UK, write to your MP and ask them to either propose amendments that will scrap the anti-protest elements of this bill, or support specific amendments, such as this one by MP Bell Robeiro-Addy. Also, sign Netpol’s petiton asking UK to protect protest rights.

Please spread this information. The Conservative party wants to turn the UK into a police state where only their opinions are heard. We cannot allow them to get away with this.

Temptation of Mara. Mogao Cave Mural, Dunhuang. 950.

The Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra charts the bodhisattva’s path of practice—an embodied way of life—not merely one of well-wishing from afar. Through compassion, one is moved to action, drawing near to the flames in order to extinguish them for good.

Invoking fire through simile, Śāntideva seers us with the burning reality that plagues our world, both literally and figuratively. While raging fire spreads across the planet, the heat of violence and conflict seethes and ferments in its midst. What can be done to douse the flames?

Abstract Advent: Week 2

Abstract Advent: Week 2

Last week was a blast, this week for the Abstract Advent the Christmas Shit™ started to bite, and I found it harder to juggle meeting up with people, portrait sessions, getting all the cards and parcels off in a panic because like storms, flooding, wrong kind of wind, snow and ice on the roads as always Royal Mail can’t keep to their last posting times…

As Sandy Denny says in ‘No End’ “They said…

Letters to the Earth: An open call for written responses to the climate crisis.

Letters to the Earth, a collective of actors, directors and playwrights are asking for your written responses to the climate and ecological emergency the world is now facing. Write a letter about the climate breakdown we are facing and hear it read at a day of joint action on Friday 12 April across leading theatres and venues nationwide. Your letter could be written to the Earth, to future generations, to our ancestors, to the fossil fuel industry. The idea is open to interpretation and the invitation is open to all.

‘The time has always been now.’
-David Lan, former Artistic Director of The Young Vic Theatre

We are facing an unprecedented global emergency, the planet is in crisis and we are in the midst of a mass extinction event. Scientists believe we have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown. Carbon emissions and temperatures keep rising; ecological collapse is everywhere. On this course, we will see abrupt and irreversible devastation. The time for denial is over – we know the truth about climate change. It is time to act.

How can you get involved

This is an invitation to write a letter of response to this crisis. This could be a letter to the Earth, to future generations, to our ancestors, to the fossil fuel industry. The idea is open to interpretation and the invitation is open to all.

All submitted letters will be read on one day of joint action on Friday 12 April across leading theatres and venues nationwide.

The pieces will then be made available for anyone to download and present anywhere in the world from 15 – 28 April, coinciding with the international Extinction Rebellion and School Strike For Climate. These pieces could be presented and performed globally when hundreds of thousands of people will be taking to the streets worldwide to demand that governments tell the truth about climate collapse and act accordingly.

Please email your submissions to [email protected] by 12 midday on Friday 22 March. The subject heading of your email should be ‘Letter’.

In October 2018, the International Panel on Climate Change reported that we only have 12 years to change how we live, globally. It described the enormous harm that anything above a 1.5oC rise in global temperature would cause. It told us that limiting to 1.5oC may still be possible yet requires ‘rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.’

The seasons alter: hoary-headed frosts
Far in the fresh lap of the crimson rose,
And on old Hiems’ thin and icy crown
An odorous chaplet of sweet summer buds
Is, as in mockery, set: the spring, the summer,
The childing autumn, angry winter, change
Their wonted liveries, and the mazed world,
By their increase, now knows not which is which:
And this same progeny of evils comes
From our debate, from our dissension;
We are their parents and original.
