Danae Mines became one of the few female firefighters in the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) 11 years ago, despite her family telling her that only men joined the department. This year, she broke down another barrier by becoming the first woman to be featured in the FDNY’s 2015 Calendar of Heroes. She had been told that the honor was reserved for men, but when she saw the open call for firefighters, she went, despite feeling a little intimidated standing in line with more than 100 men.
There are currently only 41 women in the department, but perhaps the attention Danae is getting will increase that number. “I wanted my picture in the calendar so that young girls and young women can see me and know that they can do this job,” she told the New York Daily News.

And they can’t hire the ex-prison slaves because their conviction records make them ineligible to be hired by professional fire squads.
One of my colleagues spent part of his prison term fighting fires, and almost died because they were sent into an area where the fire was supposedly out. But no, they could not hire him when he was released on parole in 1994, even though he had the skills required.
California law finally changed in 2020. Except for those convicted of violent felonies or sexual assault, the inmate firefighters are eligible to go through additional training to join fire crews as employees. They also have their records expunged and can skip parole.
But yes, the fact that we still rely on “inmate labor” is appalling.

Yesterday afternoon our Suppression Crews responded to a structure fire in Noonan, NB. Despite being able to mitigate the fire, the structure was deemed unsafe and had to be demolished. The Fire Investigation is ongoing.

During a life safety inspection this afternoon, Fire Inspectors discovered an electric fireplace plugged into a device such as those pictured below. The Fire Prevention & Investigation Division reminds you to plug space heaters and electric fireplaces directly into the wall socket as per manufacturers instructions. #keepingyousafe

This is my #mancrush every single day! This strong, confident and wonderful man right here. I was on a fire call last night and all I could think about afterwards is how much I miss seeing this guy running the show! Everyone always knew things where going to get done right when his voice was on the radio. For my fellow #firefighter friends out there, he was that Chief!love him or not… You respected him and he never forgot where he came from when he wore that gold badge! He retired in 2009 and has been missed since! I’m just lucky enough to go home to home every day! #luckygirl ☺️ He’s on to bigger things and still running the show… Well at least at work!! Lol!

$1 An Hour to Fight Largest Fire in CA History: Are Prison Firefighting Programs Slave Labor?
California relies on thousands of prisoners, including many women, to battle the wildfires burning statewide. Prisoner firefighters gain training and earn time off of their sentences for good behavior, but critics of the program say the state is exploiting prisoners’ eagerness to earn time for early release. While salaried firefighters earn an annual mean wage of $74,000 plus benefits, inmates earn just $2 per day with an additional $1 per hour when fighting an active fire—and most are barred from applying for firefighting jobs once freed. According to some estimates, California avoids spending about $80-$100 million a year by using prison labor to fight its biggest environmental problem.
Romarilyn Ralston is one of the former California prisoners calling for major changes to the program:
The firefighter training that you receive while you are incarcerated, you don’t get enough of the training needed to apply to CAL FIRE. Because of licensing, incarcerated firefighters or folks with a criminal record, once they are released, are not able to get an EMT license, and that’s one of the critical pieces to applying for these jobs post-release. …
You have the experience, the frontline experience. You have placed your life on the line. You have protected California. You have saved lives and property. But they don’t take into consideration all of that experience that you have on the front line. They are still looking for a certain degree of training and licensing in order to employ you. And we think that that’s wrong.
