Plants vs Floods!

Excessive rain can be a nuisance, but for agriculture and our economy, it can be a crisis.

Excessive rain creates excessive run-off, and very important things are simply washed away – damaging the land.

However, a collaboration of BBSRC-funded scientists came up with a new type of grass which develops huge roots. These huge roots change the structure of the soil, allowing it to hold much more water than usual.

This innovation can reduce water run-off by up to 51%, so that nutrient-rich topsoil can be protected.

This is one way scientists are making plants do amazing things.

Y'all, these are a couple of pictures from my hometown in west Tennessee. The Tennessee River has flooded and is expected to crest at 400ft by Tuesday. In Savannah alone, at least 100 roads are washed out, some houses are completely underwater. Parts of northern Alabama are also effected by this, as well as many other counties along the TN river.

Also, the city in which my sister resides was hit by a tornado last night, and I don’t have any information regarding the damage other than that she and her family are safe, thankfully.

To top it all off, parts of Ontario have experienced 70mph sustained winds today thanks to the SAME system that hit the southern states.

So if y'all could send like, some good vibes, light a candle, say a prayer, whatever, it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hey y’all, The Wife kindly asks for some good vibes, good juju, good candles, good what-ever-the-shit y’all wanna do. Her hometown, and her sister’s home are getting hit with some serious weather. So here’s a signal boost <3

NORTHEAST USA:  HURRICANE IDA BATTERS THE NE

The remnants of Hurricane Ida swept into the mid-Atlantic and New England overnight, bringing damaging winds and deadly flooding to New York City and its metro area. The National Weather Service issued its first-ever Flash Flooding Emergency for New York City, and recorded an all-time record of 3.15 in (8 cm) of rain in one hour in Central Park.

Eight people from across the region are confirmed dead from the flooding, which produced myriad videos on social media of inundated streets and torrents rushing through New York City subway stations. In the Philadelphia suburbs in southern New Jersey, two tornadoes touched down, shattering homes and leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power.

This map depicts the area covered by a Flash Flooding Emergency issued by the National Weather Service overnight.

From severe storms to critical droughts, extreme weather changes caused by climate change are seriously impacting the planet. One upcoming event which has a significant impact on the environment is the fast-spending fuelled event that is Black Friday. Sea level rise will affect the entire global population in one way or another. Whether it’s the livelihoods of communities in low-lying floodplains, the food procurement process, or global transport networks, sea-level rise will continue to threaten millions of people worldwide.

Specifically, the world of tourism is at risk of rising sea levels. Scientists, experts, and government officials have outlined the extreme risk of flooding in some of these places and that even some of these destinations could simply disappear. The increased threat of sea-level rise also will severely impact the communities that facilitate tourism in these holidaying hotspots.

Here are some visuals showing how some of the world’s most popular holiday destinations could look by 2100, if sea levels continue to rise dramatically.

WINTER IN PALESTINE: A Swedish Perspective- Hanan (Interpal A/W 2016 Intern)When you think of &lsquo

WINTER IN PALESTINE: A Swedish Perspective

- Hanan (Interpal A/W 2016 Intern)

When you think of ‘winter’, you are probably imaginingSweden. Snow, ice, reindeer, we have them all. During winter-time the temperature falls below zero, encasing the land in a thick blanket of snow that doesn’t melt for months. You might think that by our standards, the Middle Eastern winter in Palestine isn’t so much of a big deal. How wrong you’d be…

The big difference is that we have lots of warm clothes, cosy, heated houses and enough food to keep us snug and comfortable for the whole season. The Palestinians, despite it rarely snowing, face months of relentless rainandwind, with inadequate shelter and protection due to ramshackle housing and poor electrical facilities.

Despite the freezing temperatures in Sweden, we rarely ever feel cold. However, for the Palestinians, the drop in temperature has a severe impact, resulting in disease epidemics, poor sanitation anddisruption to healthcare and educational services. Back home in Sweden, we have buses to take us safely to schoolandploughs to clear the roads so that daily life can continue as normal despite the severity of the weather. The people of Palestine however, especially in Gaza, face environmental hazards and are particularly prone tocatastrophic flooding. Left unprotected from these seasonal risks, Palestinians are forced to always consider what their next step will be. The most we think about in Sweden is whether our boots will be slightly damp from the snow.

The2014 assault on Gaza left thousands of buildings damaged and rendered houses unliveable. During the winter months, conditions deteriorate until people are living precarious existences in the midst of poverty. I cannot imagine a winter exposed to the elements in this way. The thought of it makes me shiver.

This winter, Interpal are asking that we come together for Palestine to bring people #OutOfTheCold. You can donate to our Winter Aid appeal by calling us on 0208 961 9993, visiting our website www.interpal.orgor clicking the link on our Facebook page. Our hands might be cold but our hearts will surely be warm if we come together to help Palestinians in need.
