Fred Armisen and Carry Brownstein create funny as well as the next asexual male/female duo, but last night’s episode of Portandia will certainly put them closer to becoming the best.  The episode begins strong with the show’s version of Armisen and Brownstein trying to escape a barrage of so called “dj’s.” They seek refuge in Carry’s mother’s home only to find that the mother of metal is spinning.  Their escape through the DJ-ridden alley is reminiscent of any zombie movie, a desperate race through the “infected.”  They are rewarded with an ending only Portlandia could pull off, leaving Fred and Carrie on the turntable that is Earth.

The main arch of the episode is certainly one of the series most memorable.  We are introduced to the well meaning parents of Brendan and Michelle, a couple looking to get their son Grover into a private preschool.  From their charts on success and failure to their dvd presentation at the teacher interview, Brendan and Michelle show that they are caring and motivated parents, right up until the episode’s BIG climax.  Other sketches in the episode include live “caller on hold” musicians, gutter punks, Garlan-he’s a little guy, and a recurrence of everyone’s favorite canine do-gooders.

Overall, the latest episode of Portlandia ranks as one of its best, right after Mayor is Missing and Mixologist, in the fact that it is consistently funny while expanding the wonderful and weird universe that is Portlandia.

I’ve been watching a lot of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and I gotta say I’m always fascinated by the initial awkward call, since many guest seem kinda surprised when Jerry calls them, like they made plans a while ago and they weren’t sure it was actually happening. How does it work? Are they given a time frame during which Seinfeld might come pick them up and drive them around in vehicles that will probably put them in danger, forcing them to have a second breakfast? How long do they sit at home, decently dressed and presentable, waiting for the phone to ring? Do they live in fear for three days? A week? A month? A year? We just don’t know

Bill Hader and Fred Armisen Still Call Each Other on the Landline

GQ: How much time do you spend together off set?

Fred: I’d say it’s almost 24 hours a day together.

Bill: Pretty much.

Fred: Yeah. Eighteen, I guess? Not counting bathroom time. That would be gross.

Bill: Certain holidays Fred doesn’t want to hang out with me. But most of the time we hang out most days.

Fred: I can’t hang out with him on Easter because of Easter-egg hunting. And I can’t hang out with him on Halloween, because that’s a High Holy Day for my family.

Bill: When trick-or-treaters come, you guys throw water on them and give them little mini Bibles and stuff. It’s a big deal for your family.

before I leave again for another 3 weeks i wanna say that the bubble doesn’t even take itself seriously: if you watched, rewatch the ending, fred armisen says this himself lmao

it’s a comedy movie made by a just-a-dude, it’s meta, it’s gory in its own sense and it’s just a mess bc humans were, are and will be a mess not only in the pandemic but always

keep an eye for the implicit shit and don’t just get caught up on David puking or Pedro doing weird shit with a mirror.

ok bye love y'all

Fred Armisen to star in a Spanish-language pilot for HBO

Fred Armisen has sold a Spanish-language pilot to HBO that he’ll write, executive produce, and star in. The project is a half-hour comedy called Mexico City: Only Good Things Happen, and it’s reportedly about a group of friends in a “dreamy version” of Mexico City who are “obsessed with horror films and monster makeup.” Lorne Michaels will produce (because he controls the lives of all former Saturday Night Live cast members), with Ana Fabrega and Julio Torres joining Armisen as fellow writers, executive producers, and stars. Casting is just now getting underway in Mexico, so the pilot is still probably a ways off from being filmed. From there, it’ll actually have to get picked up and go to series before we can see this Spanish-language show about people who love scary monsters.
