The process for this project was similar to Cloud City, which I talked about a couple days ago. Once again, this process may work for some of you, and may not work for others, do what feels right for you just so long as you have a process.

Step 1 - The Problem - Identifying a problem is the first step in almost any process. The problem this project solved was that I really wanted to play around some more with high contrast imagery while also experimenting with texture. I also wanted to continue to bolster my portfolio. All clients will have a problem, they will have come to me for a solution. For example, a client might be struggling with convincing people to read their articles on their website, a nice illustration or short animation can really attract their attention and lead to more people wanting to read the article.

Step 2 - Inspiration - As I settled in for bed the previous night, I randomly thought about a drawing I’d done a few years ago of a guitar turning into a tree. I don’t fully remember where I’d gotten the inspiration back then, but I knew I wanted to modernize and turn  this drawing into a vector illustration.

Step 3 - Sketching - For this project, the sketch was completed years ago, and was a fairly complete drawing, Step 3 mostly involved me finding the drawing in question. In most projects especially with clients however, this is the step where I would sketch out the details of a project and get the general layout complete.

Step 4 - Review - I liked the sketch, but knew I wanted to make some changes. I wanted a symmetrical guitar, and I wanted a tree with leaves. This step is where with a client I’d make sure we were both on the same page, I may or may not show the client my sketches but before work begins in earnest making sure the client and myself understand what the project will entail is very important.

Step 5 - Research - Because of Step 4, I searched online till I found satisfactory images of a guitar and trees I could emulate. This step is important for achieving accuracy.

Step 6 - Production pt 1 illustrating - I went through a number of phases, beginning with a rough sketch of the basic elements, then slowly adding details and building the illustration up. I settled on colors fairly early on, though when I got to the leaves, I had trouble figuring out what colors to use. Then I wondered how they would look if I used negative space ti fill half of them, I instantly knew I had a solution.

Step 7 - Production pt 2 texture - With my illustration complete, I took the file out of Adobe Illustrator and brought the file into Adobe Photoshop. I needed some trial and error to get this part right, but after playing around with the halftone dots, I was able to complete the look I was going for. I then added more textures underneath to finish off the piece.

Step 8 - Final Output - I didn’t touch on this when I talked about Cloud City, but Once the file was complete I saved out a couple different versions. For a client, this would be the final delivery.

As you can see, there are several steps that go into a project like this. One may try to skip steps in the name of saving time, but that usually leads to more disastrous results. Respect the process and the work will be worth every second needed.
