SACRAMENTO –ScholarShare, California’s 529 college savings plan, is celebrating National College Savings Month with a College Savings Pledge. Starting today, Tuesday, Sept. 1 through Friday, Sept. 25, Californians who take the pledge will enter for the chance to win one of 20 ScholarShare 529 accounts each in the amount of $500 for their child or loved one. The pledge is aimed at encouraging young children to aspire to go to college – whether that is a community college, four-year university or trade school – and educating parents and guardians about the importance of saving for college and the benefits of California’s 529 plan.

“The great equalizer between the haves and have nots has always been education. However, stagnant wage growth coupled with an explosion in college tuition has pushed that education out of the reach of many California families. Early, steady savings are among the best ways to restore the affordability of a college degree. Parents can open a ScholarShare 529 account with as little as $25 and make a college education – and its many benefits – a real and affordable opportunity for their children,” California State Treasurer John Chiang said.

Now through Friday, Sept. 25, eligible Californians can take the College Savings Pledge at www.CollegeSavingsPledge.com. Twenty winners will be awarded a $500 contribution to a new or existing ScholarShare 529 account, for a California student between the ages of 3 and 14. The teachers of the designated beneficiaries will also receive a $500 Visa gift card, to help support their efforts in inspiring children to dream big and go to college. Additional details about the College Savings Pledge, including the Official Rules, can be found at www.CollegeSavingsPledge.com.

The ScholarShare College Savings Plan is California’s state-sponsored 529 college savings plan, and was recently ranked second in the top direct-sold 529 plans for three-year performance by www.SavingForCollege.com. Since its inception in 1999, ScholarShare has grown to more than 266,000 open accounts with over $6.4 billion in total plan assets. In 2014, ScholarShare helped California families meet their higher education needs, with nearly $300 million withdrawn by families to pay for qualified higher education expenses.

ScholarShare offers a diverse set of investment options, and provides tax-deferred growth and withdrawals free from state and federal taxes when the funds are used for qualified higher education expenses, such as tuition and fees, books or even certain room and board costs. Any U.S. citizen, or resident alien with a valid Social Security Number or Taxpayer Identification Number, can open a new account, for as little as $25. Through ScholarShare’s “Give a Gift” option, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends can open a new account as a gift or make a gift contribution to an existing account. ScholarShare has no annual account maintenance fee, no income limit and offers a high maximum account balance limit.

Consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses before investing in the ScholarShare 529 College Savings Plan. Please visit www.scholarshare.com for a Program Disclosure Booklet containing this and other information. Read it carefully.

Before investing in a 529 plan, you should consider whether the state you or your Beneficiary reside in or have taxable income in has a 529 plan that offers favorable state income tax or other benefits that are only available if you invest in that state’s 529 plan.

The tax information contained herein is not intended to be used, and cannot be used, by any taxpayer for the purpose of avoiding tax penalties. Taxpayers should seek advice based on their own particular circumstances from an independent tax advisor. Dear CNCS Grantees and Partners,

Today, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) released two new Notices of Funding Availability in the Senior Corps Foster Grandparent (FGP) and Senior Companion (SCP) programs. These competitions are open to federally-recognized Indian Tribes, including current tribal grantees. With these notices, CNCS intends to fund successful applicants that increase the impact of national service in Native American and Alaska native communities not currently served by FGP or SCP grantees.

Eligibility
These competitive opportunities, limited to Indian Tribes, are the first of their kind in FGP and SCP. Indian Tribes, defined as a federally recognized Indian Tribe, band, nation, or other organized group or community, including any native village, regional corporation, or village corporation, as defined under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (43 U.S.C. §1602), that the United States Government determines is eligible for special programs and services provided under federal law to Indians because of their status as Indians. Indian Tribes also include tribal organizations controlled, sanctioned, or chartered by one of the entities described.

Notice of Intent to Apply: Applicants are strongly encouraged to send a Notice of Intent to Apply by Friday, April 17, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. ET.
Application Deadline: Thursday, May 14, 2015, 5:00 p.m. ET. Successful applicants will be notified in August 2015.
The Foster Grandparent Program Indian Tribe Competition
Established in 1965, the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is one of the oldest intergenerational programs in the country, engaging adults age 55 and over to provide loving and experienced tutors and mentors to children and youth with special needs or exceptional needs.

Successful applicants will recruit and place volunteers, ages 55 and over, to provide person-to-person service to children in the Tribal community. The Foster Grandparent volunteers serve as mentors and tutors, in both early childhood and K-12 education. They may also assist adolescents by providing guidance and nurturing to build life skills and to encourage beneficial choices on the part of the young people. They may also help to transfer culture knowledge and customs, including language, from one generation to another.

The Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for Foster Grandparent grants can be found here.

The Senior Companion Program Indian Tribe Competition
Established in 1974, the Senior Companion Program links volunteers ages 55 and over with adults who have difficulty with daily living tasks. They provide assistance and friendship to make a difference by helping these adults remain independent in their homes instead of having to move to more costly institutional care. Senior Companion volunteers help with tasks such as shopping or paying bills. They also provide respite to give family members or professional caregivers off to run their own errands or to take care of their own appointments.

Successful applicants will recruit and place volunteers, ages 55 and over, to provide person-to-person service to adults in need of additional assistance, often frail elders, as well as to provide additional support to family caregivers. An element of this competitive opportunity is inclusion of activities for the Senior Companions to help their clients and family members mitigate and prevent elder abuse, including financial abuse, supporting the goals of the Elder Justice Council.

The Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for Senior Companion grants can be found here.

Technical Assistance
CNCS will host technical assistance calls to answer questions about the funding availability and about eGrants and strongly encourages all applicants to participate in these sessions.

Engineers have developed a handheld paper divide able to detect a strain of coronavirus quickly and accurately. The strain, MERS-CoV, can be detected by the device in very small quantities, and can be read directly from the device making it portable.

As one of the select few given permission by USA health officials to use diagnostics tests for COVID-19, the Purdue University biomedical engineers claimed that this device could be used to detect the COVID-29 strain – the limitations in doing so currently is the lack of funding. According to the team, the process to scale the technology for manufacturing would cost at least a couple of million US dollars.

‘Paper-based devices are already manufactured – pregnancy tests are paper-based,’ said Purdue University Biomedical Engineering Professor, Jacqueline Linnes.

‘Because this device has a more complex shape, a process hasn’t been developed to make it available on a commercial scale. However, many processes in electronics and paper manufacturing could be translated to scaling up this device.’

But so far, Linnes’ team has just been able to produce these devices on a lab scale, which calls for cutting out the paper components by hand.

‘The most difficult aspect of producing this device is definitely the assembly,’ said Purdue University Biomedical Engineering PhD Cadidate, K Byers.

This time-lapse video shows how a paper device developed by Purdue researchers tests a sample in 40 minutes. This sample is positive for MERS-CoV, as indicated by the formation of a second line on the paper strip. Credit: Purdue University video/K Byers

These challenges may easily be overcome with existing manufacturing techniques, the researchers said.

The device format would not need to change in order to detect other diseases. As the device scales up, however, it would also need to be more sensitive to detect a lower concentration of a virus for clinical relevance.

‘This paper device isn’t dependent on a particular virus or sequence. To detect COVID-19, we would just need an assay design specific to that sequence, which could come from a nasal or throat swap sample. Just like with MERS-CoV, a user could load the assay with liquid into the paper platform, fold the device and let it run,’ Linnes said.

When the device folds over, a liquid wash and chemical substances called reagents push the assay up a paper strip to make an easily visible detection line. This automatically completes a multistep process needed for detecting a virus. A user can check the strip within 40 minutes to see if the sample tested positive.

Momentum for a post-pandemic ‘green recovery’ continues, as the UK government and the European Commission set out steps to accelerate their recoveries, while supporting the paths to net zero by 2050. Here we round-up just some of the initiatives announced in recent weeks to achieve these goals.

Human hands holding earth globe and tree

Plans for preservation of biodiversity

Speaking on the 3rd June 2020, at the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Economic and Environmental Committee Meeting, the UK’s Second Secretary from the UK Delegation, Justin Addison, said; ‘As we recover, we have an opportunity to protect and restore nature, reducing our exposure to deadly viruses and climate impact.’

Highlighting the UK’s global outlook on addressing climate change, Addison added, ‘The UK will soon announce a £64 million package to support Colombia to tackle deforestation and build a cleaner and more resilient economy in areas affected by Covid-19 and conflict.’

As well as the UK’s efforts to preserve biodiversity, the European Commission will be looking to protect and restore biodiversity and natural ecosystems. Frans Timmermans, the European Commission’s Executive Vice President added that, ‘It can boost our resilience and prevent the emergence and spread of future virus outbreaks. We have now seen that this relationship between us and the natural environment is key to our health.’

Earth held in human hands

Enabling low-carbon solutions and boosting clean growth

EU:

In early June, a letter was sent to decision-makers across the European Union from more than 100 investors, urging the EU to ensure a green recovery from the covid-19 pandemic is delivered.

Investors are keen to ensure the government builds on The European Green deal to deliver a long term commitment that will accelerate the economy into one that is more green and carbon resilient post coronavirus.

The European Green deal, set out before the pandemic, details some of their targets including, a 50-55% emissions reduction by 2030; a climate law to reach net-zero emissions by 2050; a transition fund worth €100bn and a series of new sector policies to ensure all industries are able to decarbonise.

A shoot of a plant and planet Earth

UK:

To boost clean growth, the UK Government has recently launched a £40 million Clean Growth Fund that will ‘supercharge green start-ups’.

This fund will enable UK clean growth start-ups to scale up low-carbon solutions and drive a green economic recovery.

Potential examples of projects the fund could support include areas in power and energy, buildings, transport and waste.

Business Secretary Alok Sharma said: ‘This pioneering new fund will enable innovative low-carbon solutions to be scaled up at speed, helping to drive a green and resilient economic recovery.’

Crowdfunding is an alternative to cost of local tertiary studies

Crowdfunding is an alternative to cost of local tertiary studies

Early next year, the more than one million Matric students who wrote exams in 2020 will find out their fate, and whether they qualify to study at tertiary institutions in 2021. Given the size of the number, the education sector finds itself with a serious issue as it pertains to those who will actually be able to study.
If you qualify though, an even bigger hurdle is that of tuition, which is…

As a PhD candidate in the last year of my doctorate, I’m currently applying for postdoctoral positions, and running into a lot of difficulty because the fellowships that were previously available are on ice (NOAA, EPA), dead (USGS Mendenhall), or are so selective and prohibitive in their application requirements that they are effectively a lottery (NSF). Heart Transplant Help

I’ve never made a post like this, but this important to me. A co-worker and friend of mine is in need of a heart transplant, and they’re struggling to work whilst waiting to get on Disability.

They originally had a double heart attack followed by a double stroke, and their condition has been worsening sense. They’re only in their late 20’s. Our job hasn’t been very understanding of this, to say the least. They need to be able to pay for a transplant, as well as the treatments beforehand.

There’s more details and specifics here, or linkedbelow, both of which link to their GoFundMe.

They’re a very kind person with a wife and many pets, they run their own LGBT+ charity, and have endured many hardships all the while trying to help others. I hope we can make some kind of difference back. Thank you for your support.

Even if you can’t give anything, please share.

So I’m aware I haven’t really posted anything in a while but I hope this reaches someone. My brother’s name is Efren. Growing up he used to tease and make fun of me, but among all the teasing he also helped raise me along with our mom. When he was little he wanted to be an architect. But his is the story that a lot of Mexican American working class families face: either take the opportunities available to you to attain your dreams, or curtail those in order to take care of your family. He chose his family.

After graduating high school he turned down full ride scholarships in order to stay and work to help pay the bills. It was just him, my mom, and me. After a couple of years we got stable enough economically that he was able to go to college, but after graduation we fell on hard times again and instead of finding work in his field or applying to architecture school like he always dreamed, he decided to stick around and help us again. It’s because of his choice to help our family that I was able to go to college too, something that for a time I didn’t think was possible. It’s because of him that I was able to apply to and get accepted into a PhD program in the hopes of becoming a professor. It’s because of him that my mom has a house to call her own. My mom and I owe him everything.

Yesterday, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). He’s uninsured. I’m a student, our mom works in childcare. There’s a high success rate for remission if he gets treatment, but we can’t afford it. He’s all me and my mom have, and we can’t lose him. He chose family growing up, and it’s my turn to choose him. Please, any donation helps. I just want him to come home.

I know times are tough with covid and everything so if anyone could please just spare a dollar or a reblog thatd be great. I can’t lose him.

a_n Professional Development Bursary 2018

I will be travelling to New York during May thanks to a development bursary via a-nhttps://www.a-n.co.uk/news/n-artist-bursaries-2018-70-artists-receive-share-65000

The residency will allow me to attend Open Engagement:

Open Engagement 2018 — SUSTAINABILITY will take place May 11–13, 2018 at the Queens Museum and a constellation of sites across New York City. This year’s conference will feature presenters including Lucy LippardandMel Chin.

Now in its 10th year – the last in its current form – OE will bring together hundreds of artists, activists, educators, students, organizations, institutions, and thinkers from every corner of the globe. This year’s program will explore the theme of SUSTAINABILITY, as well as take stock of the field of socially engaged art.

OE 2018 will feature a selection of focused trainings to provide attendees with tools for more impactful and sensitive creative work anchored in community-building and social justice, as well as opportunities for intimate discussion during our Dinner Conversation Series. In the evenings, femme-fronted, queer-inclusive nightlife organizers will host celebrations, guided by the belief that transformative acts of change are deeply indebted to these marginal spaces of collective joy.

OE is working with partners spanning New York City’s five boroughs to represent the work being done at the intersection of art and activism across the city. Current partners include: A Blade of Grass, American Folk Art Museum, Bad at Sports, Bronx Museum of Art, Bureau of General ServicesQueer Division, Community Access Art Collective, Eyebeam, Fourth Arts Block, Interference Archive, International Center of Photography, Knockdown Center, Lesbian Herstory Archives, Maker Park Radio, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, New York Hall of Science, No Longer Empty, Recess, Social Justice Tours, Studio Museum in Harlem, Swale, Decolonize This Place, Discwoman, Sylvia Rivera Law Project, The 8th Floor, and Visual AIDS.

Research Question: Why is the opportunity provided by this bursary crucial to your artistic and professional development?

It will place within a research-lead, conference-based, international environment the central tenets of my practice over the last 20 years. Namely an exploration into the politics of material values within socio-economic frameworks. I often question financial imperatives, environmental impacts and the disjuncture inherent within our ‘relationship’ between the two.

Attending the conference will offer an unprecedented access to global and local thinkers, to ‘change-agents’ and artist-lead initiatives and to key-note presentations from Lucy Lippard (Feminism, dematerialization, 'cultural amnesia as political strategy’) and Mel Chin (cross-cultural aesthetics, complexity, multi- disciplinarity).

It will also allow me to question how arts practice can encourage communities, as well as individuals, to critically review their existing ‘visual cognitive strategies’ whilst developing new methodological approaches ‘that dislodge discipline boundaries, override media conventions, and disrupt political interests’ (Sullivan, 2012), whilst also exploring work that shifts the focus from objects to relationships (Capra, 1996, p28).

You can find out more about the conference here: http://openengagement.info/queens-2018/
