Currently Reading: 19th October
Today I’m catching up with you all with a currently reading post. I know. I’ve neglected you since last weekend. Although I have a few books on the go, I haven’t picked them up for a few weeks so don’t count them! I have gotten back heavily in to the audio books for Harry Potter. Not only am I a potter head but who am I to deny Stephen Fry and his amazing voices?
I am now on to the fourth book,…

All I’m saying is Sirius wrote to Harry every DAY before the third task, just to remind him he’s probably just fine while he’s at Hogwarts but to be aware, to practice for the maze, “so help me GOD don’t leave the castle,” to let him know that keeping Harry safe is Sirius’s number one priority…when every other adult seems to just be fine letting Harry Do This.
Like what other adult guidance does Harry have that whole book? Who else seems to give more than a passing care? It’s only Sirius who is directly communicating to Harry that something is wrong and giving him context and support and stern admonishments for putting himself in danger
only for Sirius to have everything he does and says hyper-scrutinized once every other adult Swoops In after the Horrible Thing Sirius was worried about for a whole year…happens!! And suddenly he’s irresponsible and deluded about who Harry even is and not to be trusted
and there IS a breakdown in Sirius in OotP…but it’s preceded by the above! And I don’t think it’s a stretch to say it’s at least in part caused by the above as well. It’s bad enough to be trapped, but to be constantly undermined in the most important relationship you have…
He really didn’t deserve to be immediately put in the position of having to defend his intentions and his ability to take care of Harry. He just didn’t.

Sirius’ generally awful mental state in OotP is almost certainly caused, at least in part, by what Harry went through the entire previous year.
After being on the run from Dementors for a year, he manages to unmask Pettigrew, get him away from Harry and convince Harry of his innocence. Great, right? He leaves the country and lies on a beach and enjoys a not-terrible existence for, like, two weeks out of the last thirteen years.
Then Harry’s scar hurts. Dumbledore’s probably the one to tell him that it means Voldemort’s getting stronger. Harry goes to the Quidditch World Cup which is attacked by Death Eaters. No sooner does Sirius rush back into a country with a price on his head in a panic than Harry is entered illegally into a deadly Tournament. Sirius is doubtless out of his mind with worry, because otherwise he wouldn’t have taken the risk of BREAKING INTO A WIZARDING HOUSE AND USING THEIR MINISTRY-REGULATED FLOO.
Sirius didn’t have to come to Hogsmeade. Objectively, it would have made much more sense to stay safely hidden elsewhere and communicate with Harry by owl. But he didn’t. He hid in a cave and lived on rats because Harry was in danger and he couldn’t have lived with himself if he were any further away. He says he won’t breathe freely again until this Tournament is over.
Then comes the final task. And Sirius is waiting in the pumpkin patch, hearing screams of fear and grief from the Quidditch pitch. After who knows how long of silent panic, Harry turns up, mercifully alive but shaking, frozen, in shock, bloodied and broken. He explains numbly that he was captured, tortured, imperiused and nearly killed in a story straight out of Sirius’ worst nightmares. James & Lily had tasked him with keeping Harry safe, and he failed. Harry’s hurt and traumatized and Sirius was utterly powerless to stop Voldemort getting to him.
Don’t tell me Sirius’ guilt about encouraging Harry to listen to Moody (Crouch) didn’t eat at him. Don’t tell me Harry’s frozen expression didn’t haunt Sirius’ nightmares for months. Don’t tell me Sirius didn’t imagine James’ echo emerging from Voldemort’s wand and accusing him of failing his son. Don’t tell me it didn’t cause him physical pain to think about Harry being tortured. Don’t tell me the Boggart of Harry’s lifeless body didn’t hit Sirius like a punch to the gut a month later.

I’ve started packing for France today.
At the same time, I need to clear out the living room and kitchen because they will be renovated while we’re gone.
The logistics are a complete nightmare.

To be honest, Barty Crouch Jr was more like Mad-Eye Moody than Mad-Eye Moody himself.
