Thehypocaust was an empty space that existed under the floor of certain rooms in ancient Roman baths. It was filled with pillars to hold up the floor while a furnace burned in a nearby area and let the hot air flow into it, keeping the bath hot. Read more.

The graphic is good in all but one aspect and that is the tool they show in use. It almost looks like a double headed firefighters axe which is bound to land you in the hospital if you try to use it for splitting. The above image shows two types of tools, on the left is an axe and on the right is what’s called a splitting maul or maul. I think you can assume by the name where I’m going with this.

Notice that the axe has a much thinner blade with a very gentle taper. It is also VERY sharp. This is because a wood axe is made for chopping wood; the light, thin, sharp blade allows the axe to easily cut through wood fibers. So if you’re trying to fell a tree, an axe is the tool for you.

A maul on the other hand is very thick with a steep taper and a relatively blunt blade. It is also considerably heavier than an axe, and using it feels more similar to using a sledgehammer than an axe. The purpose of a maul is to act as a wedge BETWEEN the fibers of already cut logs, forcing them apart in a relatively clean break (if the fibers are straight and you don’t have any knots).

If you tried to use the sharper axe for splitting, especially with the splitting pattern the diagram shows, it would likely just cleave right through a small bit of wood and start heading for a nearby foot or leg.

Now there are double bit axes (two sided), but a lot of them are more form than function. A double bit axe offers more versatility than a single bit axe if you know what you’re doing. Often, one wedge will be kept sharp to act as an axe while the other edge is slightly more blunt to act (somewhat) as a maul. I personally prefer using a maul for splitting, but some folks swear by their double bit axes. The most important thing to remember when using a double bit axe is that BOTH SIDES are sharp. That means that you have to be extra careful when you’re using it.

Now, I’m sure after reading all that you’d like to go out and fell your own tree to make some firewood. To be quite honest, you should ditch the axe for a saw or chainsaw to fell a tree, but if you really want to feel that bushcraft spirit, you’ll want to use the proper form so you don’t hurt yourself in the process. When swinging an axe or maul, you want the tool and gravity to do most of the work for you. On the upswing, you will slide your dominant hand up the handle toward the head as your mom dominant hand stays nearer to the base. As you swing down, you will slide your dominant hand back down toward your non dominant hand, slightly pushing the axe and letting gravity do most of the work (on a downward swing). In practice it looks like this:

If you do this correctly, swinging an axe should be far less exhausting and difficult and FAR less likely to throw out your back. I would recommend reading further into proper technique if you’re really gung-ho about this felling a tree thing.

Create A Permanent Home Working Office

It’s a trend – everyone is creating a permanent home working office. Many workers will be continuing to work from home, at least partly, after Covid-19 restrictions are reduced.

Whether it’s full-time remote working or a hybrid approach, employees and business owners need to have a permanent home working office that’s a comfortable and productive space.

This means that today is a better day…
