BLACK KILLINGS BY POLICE: Maps of relative rates of Black fatalities

Based on a large dataset of police killings (including cases from 2015 through Sept. 24, 2020), these maps show the percentage of killings by police in which the fatalities were black, normalized by the percentage of the total population that is Black. The total fatality count in that time period, of all races, is about 5,600 people. So values greater than 1 represent disproportionate risk to Black people. Data courtesy of Washington Post reporters, who share their data on GitHub. Maps by Professor Cunningham of the Vassar College GIS Lab.

Note the patterns:  states with high rates of black killings by police, not surprisingly, largely coincide with those known for BLM activism and protests. There are some possible surprises for the highest rates by states: Utah (13), Iowa (7.6), Oregon (5.1), West Virginia (4.4), Wisconsin (4.3), Illinois (4.2), Idaho (4.2), and Washington (4.2). Note that much of the South and Midwest has relatively low rates. The data per county do not correspond with a strict rural-urban breakdown, but is quite irregular. It probably reflects local police-black community relations, which apparently vary widely.

US Coronavirus Geography:  Different Policies, Different Results

A growing number of states are pausing plans to reopen amid rising cases of COVID-19, with some even reimposing restrictions that were previously lifted. The federal government has left it to individual states to implement their own guidelines for reopening the economy, leading to varied stay-at-home policies and health outcomes. Maps produced by Fortune show the changes over the past few months of where cases have spiked, and where they have decreased. Florida and Texas had early reopenings of their economies and are now seeing strong increases in cases of the virus, while New York and New Jersey, which were at one stage the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States, have seen their cases decline since April, amid some of the toughest restrictions implemented in the country.

COVID IN THE RAINFOREST: Emerging Crisis hits the Amazon

With more than 250,000 reported cases, Brazil has become the country with the third-highest number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the world. Some analysts say the exact figure could be up to fifteen times higher than the confirmed figure, as there is insufficient testing in the large South American nation.

Many isolated and impoverished indigenous groups in Brazil’s Amazon region are at a higher risk, as their community settlements are located far from medical service providers, surrounded by many of miles of rainforest. This map by the Financial Times shows the officially recognized indigenous territories in Brazil, which are amongst the poorest in South America.

In Amazonas, home to many of Brazil’s indigenous territories, more than 1,200 people have already died of COVID-19. Scientists and indigenous chiefs believe the spread of infection can be traced to gold miners and loggers in the region, who have increased illegal activities in the Amazon while national attention has been diverted from environmental protection during the pandemic.

This map depicts the location of the indigenous communities in Brazil under threat from coronavirus. All COVID-19 updates will be displayed in a red box.

MAPPING NYC:  Coronavirus Deaths by Zip Code

There have been 15,871 confirmed COVID-19 deaths in New York City. Until yesterday, the data was not connected to geographical location. Check out the newest map using the latest from the NYC Department of Health.

Interestingly, this map shows a population virtually the opposite by income and status of a previous map of those New Yorkers who were able to flee the city during the pandemic! But the message remains the same: wealth and privilege provide more spatial mobility and choice of locale in whatever circumstances!
