The actor David Garrick’s diary documenting his 1751 trip to Paris was thought to have been lost for more than a century. It ended up in the hands of Harry Houdini, who was a collector of magic and theatre history. Houdini made the diary available to scholars for the first time in 1922, filling in one of the last major gaps in the life of Garrick. I shot this at Tony Oursler's Imponderalbe at MOMA. His archive of ephemera relating to stage magic, spirit photography, pseudoscience, telekinesis, and other manifestations of the paranormal was truly fascinating. These are Houdini’s handcuffs. His wife would pass him the key with a kiss before he hit the water. (Kate Bush fans - can you hear that song?)

The great “magician” himself! Dr. (though he wasn’t really!) Walford Bodie, a hypnotist inspired by the image of Charlie Chaplin and the wonders of Houdini, was a popular act in the Edwardian era. He hypnotized patients, and claimed he could cure any sickness doing so with his “bloodless surgery”.

Belated update: We got our set together and put into Houdini, and just about have all the animation completely locked down. However, we cut the story by about two minutes due to time constraints around having a limited crew. After an extensive rewrite, it’s just short and sweet now, and the kitchen set (and most background elements in general) will be virtually unseen behind the depth focus.
