Equality Can’t Wait - Technology for Public Safety, Crowdsourced Help, Equal Access (SaveMeNow)

#Equality Can’t Wait for Women in Technology and Public Safety!

We are applying to the Challenge with Worldie, SaveMeNow, Safe Haven Community, Code Your Dreams, The Girls Code, and Peace Education and Practice Network.

We will create technology for public safety, crowdsourced help, and equal access projects to empower women and girls for generations.

We see massive disparities in technology and public safety for women, even for calling 911. Domestic violence is the most experienced issue for 911.

Crowdsourced help and housing do not yet exist in the United States for domestic abuse victims.

Cyberabuse online harms female public figures, lives, safety, and careers. We propose the solutions to save lives.

SaveMeNow created by firefighters provides real-time data, geolocation, and victim-centering to emergency centers. (http://SaveMeNowApp.es

Safe Haven Community provides crowdsourcing help with people donating rooms directly for domestic abuse victims. With millions of victims, isolation, and not enough infrastructure, crowdsourcing is the solution. (http://SafeHavenCommunity.org

Code Your Dreams and The Girls Code provides coding classes for socioeconomically diverse disadvantaged girls.

Worldie is the collaborator applying as Social Media for Good. We will create anti-cyberabuse coding, helpful systems, and distribution. We will improve lives.

Equality Can’t Wait Challenge from Pivotal Ventures (Melinda Gates):

Happy 58th Birthday, singer and actress Lorraine McIntosh born 13th May 1964 in Glasgow.

Lorraine was brought up in Cumnock, Ayrshire from about the age of three.  She has been a member of one of Scotland’s favourite bands Deacon Blue since they formed in Glasgow in 1985.

Lorraine didn’t have an easy upbringing, she lost her mother and she said her Dad coped for a while then fell apart, hitting the bottle he started missing rent payments which led to them being evicted, she said the council waited until she had turned 18, a week after that the were out. In an interview for The Big Issue Lorraine poured her heart out saying………..

“I got a phone call from a social worker saying I wasn’t to go home, as dad had been evicted. I was at the bus stop with my friend, but couldn’t get on the bus. She phoned her mum and I ended up staying with them at first.  No clothes, no nothing. We lost everything. It just got put in the street. And the saddest thing was I lost all my mum’s things, her clothes, wee bits of jewellery, all put on the street. Gone.”

I empathise with this entirely except I actually got home from school and found all our belongings on the street after we got evicted, I was 13 at the time………..

Lorraine was a regular on the Scottish soap, River City, she has also appeared in three  episodes of Taggart  playing different roles, more recently she turned up on Outlander last year as Mrs. Sylvie, the owner of a popular brothel in the town of Cross Creek. Also last year  Deacon Blue’s 10th album, City Of Love, shot to No 4 in the UK album rankings the week before lockdown, giving the Glasgow outfit their biggest chart success since 1994.

During the pandemic, as well as coping with the strain of lockdown, Lorraine, who lives with Ricky in Glasgow, was taken ill with coronavirus in the early stages of the outbreak.

She said: “It has taken quite a while to get over it completely. I was in bed for three weeks, and then recovered.”

In 2020 Lorraine joined up with the Simon Community’s Nightstop campaign, to encourage people to open their homes to vulnerable young people. The Nightstop service offers young people aged 16 to 25 a safe place to stay when they find themselves in a crisis. All the volunteer hosts are fully vetted and trained. Since starting in Glasgow last year, eight families have provided 96 nights of emergency accommodation. She and her husband, Deacon Blue frontman Ricky Ross, are considering signing up as hosts – but only if the Simon Community think that their high profile won’t get in the way.

I really like Lorraine, and Ricky’s humanity,  specifically Lorraine visited Rwanda  two years ago to raise awareness of sexual violence against women when she was moved to tears by the testimony of victims. She has recently spoken out against the plan to send refugees coming to the UK to the country and  said the country was still recovering from a genocide inflicted during the civil war in 1994 and for ministers to consider sending asylum seekers there is deplorable.

On her trip, she heard of shocking conditions, including child slavery, youngsters being burned to death, and rape being used as a weapon of war to destroy communities.

On her final day in Rwanda, she made a pilgrimage to one of the most infamous genocide sites in the country called Nyamata where thousands were slaughtered in and around a church.

She said: “I was unprepared for the sight of thousands of items of clothing from the fallen folded and piled up on the church pews. The ceiling pockmarked with bullets and a line around the bottom of the wall which our guide tells us is the blood line from the carnage. A river of blood. In the gardens outside 50,000 people lie buried.

On the music front, Deacon Blue recently played The Hydro in Glasgow to a sell out audience. The band released their tenth studio album entitled Riding on the Tide of Love in February this year, they next play in Scotland on July 9th on Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, they have other gigs before and after this throughout Europe.

After seeing the impact @ReclaimYourVoice events were having on people’s lives, I became passionate about continuing the work. My fear of public speaking was still something I had to deal with and it was a challenge every time I had to stand in front of the room as the host. But not only did I keep doing it, I also found myself going to open mics around the city so that I could let people know about our events. I would perform my Firefly poem and then finish by speaking about Reclaim Your Voice. I must admit I surprised myself; I’d spent my entire life fiercely dreading ever being on stage and here I was taking the initiative to do so because I believed in this cause so much. I was doing things to raise awareness for the survivor community that I was never willing to do for myself with my photography business. I was now willing to try and fail. I was willing to face rejection. I was willing to face my greatest fears. And despite the fact that this meant constantly making myself uncomfortable, and despite the fact that I was doing all of this for free(dom), I had never felt more fulfilled in my life.

#SunnahSmiles is a campaign promoting our General Children’s Fund. In simple terms, this is a pot where donations are combined and distributed to wherever the need is most acute. This might cover the cost of an urgent operation for a sick child, fund specialised tutoring for children with disabilities, or help to procure wheelchairs and other equipment for children in need. It is a way to support children and ensure that the generosity of our donors goes directly to those most in need of aid, rather than being funnelled into the latest popular cause.

Interpal’s General Children’s Fund is a way of giving that protects the validity and legitimacy of donor aid. Palestinian refugee children have been born into this life and have no way of escaping it on their own. By giving, you help us to provide emergency relief and help those who do not have the power to help themselves.

Why support us?

International aid is often viewed as a somewhat problematic concept. Some argue that it prevents countries from developing or that it prolongs conflict. And indeed it is true that in situations where a careful strategy is lacking, or where proper research into a country’s needs has not been done, the resulting aid packages can produce counterproductive results. The fostering of a culture of dependence, as opposed to the sustainable foundation for positive change which most NGOs aim to build, is a shortfall that the sector has tried to address.

Interpal was founded by Palestinians in 1994 following the Oslo Accords, giving us a high level of experience and insight that is reflected in our work across the Occupied Palestinian Territories and in the refugee camps of Lebanon and Jordan.

There are currently an estimated 5,149,742 Palestinian refugees in the Near East region, with nearly 500,000 in Lebanon, a figure that represents around 10% of the population there. The numbers for Gaza are even more shocking with the total population at two million, and refugees making up 44% of this total.

When we break these figures down even further, a bleak picture begins to emerge:

70% of Gaza’s children are refugees.

80% of the refugee population in the West Bank live under the poverty line.[1]

On top of this, UNWRA does not have the capacity to provide the care these children need, with estimates showing that around 100,000 children, that’s 20% of the children in UNRWA’s schools, have special needs yet do not receive the necessary help. These are the new generation of Palestinians, yet still know nothing beyond life in desperate conditions.

Palestinian refugees are not protected by the 1951 Refugee Convention and therefore are not guaranteed the fundamental freedoms granted to many refugees, such as the right to education, the right to settlement and repatriation, the right to free access to courts. Because of this, Palestinian refugee children and adults cannot live without international aid: they just do not have the means. Whether this be the authority to change their situation in the long term or tangible resources to make life bearable in the short term, these are things which only become accessible with your help.

There are countless projects in motion in the refugee camps across the region, many of which are funded or implemented by Interpal. We are an NGO with a strict humanitarian focus, who give aid to both PalestinianandSyrian refugees who need our help.

What kind of projects do we support?

A project we have funded for the past few years is the ‘The Friends of Lazarus’ home for homeless girls in the Bethany area of the West Bank. This is an orphanage with the space and resources to focus on health care and education to support the health and well-being of the girls as they grow. They aim to work with the local social services in a way that will strengthen the whole community, addressing the root cause of the problem they exist to help in a sustainable way.

The projects we fund and those we run are implemented by our field offices, by locals who are often refugees themselves. This affords our work in the community a level of respect from our beneficiaries, who feel that they can trust those who can communicate in an honest and open way, stemming from their own experience and understanding of displacement.

As winter looms, Palestinian refugee camps face environmental catastrophe, meagre nutrition and a lack of adequate shelter to see them through. Our urgent Winter Aid Appeal strives to protect those in need from the harshness of the elements by providing emergency relief in case of catastrophe and preparing families for the months ahead. By supporting the General Children’s Fund, your generosity can help to bring desperate children out of the cold this winter.

Let’s come together #ForPalestineand follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by bringing smiles to the children of Palestine.

The Vision Project, our joint initiative with UNRWA has been covered with a piece on Middle East Monitor.

The project has provided over two hundred blind and visually impaired children in Gaza with cutting-edge digital technology to help them access information sources, learning opportunities and creative initiatives. It also equipped visually impaired children in Gaza with “Voice Dream Reader” technology to supplement their education. As part of The Vision Project we also provided digital and equipment training to 33 UNRWA teachers.

January has been a busy month for all of us at Interpal. From the launch of our new website to advocacy events in Parliament, we have been hard at work ensuring that this important campaigning year gets off to a good start.

As we wrap up our Winter Appeal, let’s remember that the difficulties refugees face do not simply dissipate with the arrival of warmer weather. Nevertheless, I would like to thank you personally for your generous support; we raised just under £200,000 over the winter and are proud to be delivering vital aid to those in need.

Last week, I was invited to speak at a parliamentary event hosted by Dr. Phillipa Whitford MP to highlight the work we do at Interpal in delivering vital aid to Palestinians in need. The question of how to take action is particularly important in 2017, as we look forward to a year of important anniversaries.

Finally, I am delighted to announce that The Vision Project has been completed successfully in Gaza. We partnered with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to equip over 200 blind and visually impaired students with cutting-edge digital technology to supplement their education. You can read more about the project by following the link below.

I have to say, I think in the old style as if of the “Who’s Who” book - if you can think of what I prefer…

Nonprofit social media appeals to ethics, safety, positivity, and fact-checking.

The *opposite* (In design too! That was the point!)

You should be earning awards from Congress like AEDAN! Not being bought up by anti-egalitarian demographics. That’s SV..
