When I was 14, it was a mandatory part of the history lessons to watch a holocaust document movie Escape From Sobibor.  A few jews actually managed to escape from Sobibor’s concentration camp and it was their story, based on the escaped Jews’ experiences.

Teacher only warned at one point that “There’s going to be a bit bad scene next, close your eyes if you don’t want to watch”. Otherwise we watched it fully. Our class actually watched it twice - because we wanted to. Teacher only commented if there were some inaccuracies and answered our questions if we had any during the movie.

I can’t remember if I had read a book of a concentration camp survivor’s memoirs before that movie or afterwards. I think it was before, as I couldn’t watch the movie twice. I got a permission to sit in the hallway. I think the other students understood what the showers were and what was going to happen, but I had already read a book of the events and saw photos of the gas champers with permanent marks and stains from fingernails, vomit and shit on the walls.

It’s been a small life-time from the book and the movie but I still remember bits of it vividly. Especially from the book.

The woman was still a child in the concentration camp. I remember how she at one point got to peel potatoes with another woman. Whenever no one was looking, she ate the peel as fast as she could, eating faster than the middle-aged woman peeling the potatoes. She got angry with this girl and attacked her.

Another time she was taken to the line to the gas champers. When the guards weren’t watching, she dove into a ditch full of naked, dead bodies, and laid there still for 9 hours. That saved her life.

If we had lived closer to the central Europe, we would have visited the concentration camps like the local students do.

I would say that in the Europe, the holocaust’s memory is always present. We get to learn about it in very early age. Thus, from my perspective, banning Maus in Tennessee is nothing but antisemitism and trying to eradicate history and wash it cleaner. We DO know that Holocaust deniers exist, too, which is an insane concept to even comprehend.

Read Maus, especially if you’re American. Know that it will be triggering and hard to stomach - if that happens, congratulations. You’re a normal, empathetic person. I’m always upset for a long, long time when I get to read and encounter something horrible. I read a book of a Finnish famine - one of the worst in the history of the world - and the eyewitness testimonies of those two years, and I was horribly upset for 3 days. Even today, years later, I get really sad when I think about the events of that book.

That’s normal. You’re supposed to be upset when you encounter suffering and horrors of a fellow humans. I would be more concerned if you felt nothing!

Eventually, the upset will go away but the knowledge will not disappear. The knowledge is worth the upset, if you ask me (but you know yourself the best).

Life doesn’t arrive with trigger warnings and things can escalate to nightmarish if we’re not aware of the red flags - and banning Maus is one of the red flag.

some of you need to go outside and I dont mean that in a mean or condescending way I mean it in a “you would benefit from talking to real people face to face, and developing social skills” type way

genuinely tho. more and more frequently i interact with people online who shock me with how young they act for how old they are, because i associate that level of social and interpersonal inability with fucking. fourteen year olds. there is a noticeable deterioration of social skills and it’s annoying as someone who actually knows how to talk to people, because i find myself having to almost parent people basically my age into learning how to properly communicate. no, just saying insults and then adding /lh does not mean you’re friends with someone. you can’t just call someone a bitch or a whore or any type of slur and get surprised when they aren’t okay with that, because if you actually took a step outside you’d realize those are words that have a whole lot of weight behind them and online get thrown around by social infants with no clue how to properly talk to people.

people are always coming to tell me that i’m very nice or very welcoming, and i don’t know how to explain this to you, but it’s because i have actual social skills. i know how to be polite. i know how to listen to people. i know how to actually form healthy relationships with people who aren’t just words on a screen. and it’s come to my realization that not everyone does, which makes it extra exhausting to keep up conversations with literal adults who don’t even understand the basics of interpersonal communication.

this puts it into words well ty

tags from @/lemonberry-conda and they’re entirely correct

I do viscerally get the “this just does not come naturally to me so I am not even going to try (and make a virtue of not trying) but: there is value in learning and practicing social skills. There is value in trying to be kind, in trying to communicate and connect, in practicing empathy and compassion. And they all absolutely take practice! Watch, learn, listen, ask questions, treat them as knowledge worth learning and keeping and refining, and don’t give up if it doesn’t go perfectly all the time.

Someone once explained small talk to me as an exchange of acknowledgements - "you are a person” “Yes, and you are also a person”. And, like, there is a huge amount of value contained in that exchange, and in the cultural shorthand we use for it.

heres the realest shit ever: literally no one is going to pressure you to do drugs in high school

literally no one

an encounter i had in 10th grade in a bathroom

person: hey we’re about to smoke some pot do you want some?

me: nah i got a test in like 20 minutes i just have to pee

person: alright good luck

actual highschool party I’ve been to

person: I brought beer!

people: aaaaaaa yyyyeeeaaahhh

person: want some?!?!

Me: no I don’t drink

person: GOOD MORE FOR US HERE’S SOME SODA

On the bus:
Dude: Do you want a cigarette?
Me: Dude I’m asthmatic. I’d die.
Dude: Okay, cool, cool.

6th period math:

friend: hey, you want a weed brownie?

me: nah I’m good.

friend: cool.

Lunch

Some girl: You guys wanna smoke weed in the stairwell??

Us: not really

Girl: Okay friends, if you want any later my name’s Zoey, i always sit here

Guy: do you want a cigarette?

Me: I don’t smoke

Guy: good, don’t start

(that happened on multiple occasions with different people)

Seriously I was pressured into reading the Twilight books 1000x more than any drugs or alcohol

The last one

Adults would rather believe drugs are caused by peer pressuring teens rather than horrible situations developing kids are put into that drive them to seek out any sort of relief they can find. They don’t want to believe that they themselves are driving kids to do drugs.

Want teens to do less drugs? Provide accessible and cheap (or free) mental health support, get kids out of abusive situations, and use education rather than fear mongering when trying to deter teens.

This is more of a personal opinion, but I think legalizing weed would significantly reduce the use of harder, more dangerous drugs.

Contributing factors to substance abuse, at all ages:

Messed up family life, specifically things like neglect and abuse. Unresolved trauma issues.

Mental health issues, particularly undiagnosed ones or ones which are not being appropriately treated.

Chronic pain.

These are three of the biggest factors leading to substance abuse in EVERY age group. This is part of why the “war on drugs” especially in schools, is not helpful, because drug abuse is almost always a symptom of an underlying problem. Those problems NEED to be addressed in order to truly resolve the issue of drug use. Further ostracizing people who do abuse substances, and criminalizing the use of drugs is NOT the solution. It can lead to further trauma, further life stresses, and put people at a much higher risk of future drug usage.

Teens, and all people really, need to have access to appropriate healthcare, and ESPECIALLY for children and vulnerable adults, it needs to be something which is advocated for and pushed by people other than their guardians/parents. Because their parents and guardians are the most likely reason why they DON’T have access to proper treatment.

it occurs to me that people might not know this (as far as I know, this is only a Beta option right now) but this is helpful for anyone who uses image ID. since I figured this out, I’ve started preemptively doing this to every picture I upload, though of course that means that the image’s description isn’t visibly in the post/caption which means no one realizes I’ve actually already described the thing but anyway

so here I am uploading a photo onto tumblr, as you do

A screenshot of a Tumblr post being created. The uploaded picture is an oil painting called "The Christian Martyr" by Edward Armitage. Having clicked on the meatball menu in the bottom right corner of the image, an option has popped down that says "update image description."

I’m going to click on the little dots in the bottom right hand corner, which pulls up “update image description,” which pulls up a box.

A screenshot of a Tumblr post. This time the image description box is visible, labelled "Image Description" with the subheader "By adding an image description to your post, you are making it more accessible for screen reader users." You can see that I've started to describe the oil painting.

And now I can put my description in the box.

Benefits include:

  • Having the description actually attached to the image, so the image description isn’t out of order in a post
  • Actually being part of Tumblr’s code instead of an ad hoc thing added to a post
  • Making Tumblr more accessible!

Idk who needs to hear this tonight, but I’ve been struggling with it a lot myself lately so I imagine there’s at least a couple folks who could use the sentiment:

It’s ok to not be able to create content as often or as quickly as you used to.

It’s ok for your WIP to stay a WIP.

It’s ok to bounce between projects and follow the one that has your interest at the moment.

It’s ok to spend your free time doing other hobbies you enjoy.

Life outside of fandom comes first, and your projects will turn out much better and you’ll think far fonder of them once you let yourself treat them like the hobby they’re supposed to be. <3

It’s ok to spend

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

vampireapologist:

Being a good person is a choice. Don’t let people fool you into believing that truly good people never have bad thoughts, are never tempted by the easier path, by the low road, never mess up or act out selfishly. Never believe a person can be good without making a conscious effort.

Every single time you do something good, you’ve made a decision to make the world a little brighter.

Goodness is not an inherent trait, it is a choice. Keep making it! I see you, I’m proud of you, and I’m rooting for you!

Hello everyone! I’m sorry I’ve been gone for so long! Unfortunately this isn’t a coming back post. I’ve had a really hard time trying to write for this blog and I’m hoping that I’ll recover and get to your requests but for the moment I won’t be active on this blog until further notice.

I’m so sorry! I know I had a couple of series I was writing and I’m hoping to still finish them but I don’t know when that will be. I’m so grateful for your all support and love for my writing over the past year and this blog wouldn’t exist without you! And Big shoutout to my mutuals for this blog (you know who you are) who supported me from day dot on this blog and always encouraged me with requests and love!

My brain just doesn’t want to write for Harry Potter characters rn and I feel awful because I love this blog so much but I just can’t. Requests are closed from here on out and I will not be active. I hope you all understand, feel free to message me with questions and fingers crossed I recover from this writers block sometime soon.

Bye for now lovelies, Katie xxxx

RKSPRING DEADLINE EXTENDED!

We’ll be extending the event for one full week! Your new deadline is midnight EST at the end of Wednesday, April 26th. Read the original post for all the requirements!

elumish:

People talk a lot about how reading is necessary for writing, but when you really want to improve your writing, it’s important to go beyond just simple reading. Here are some things to do when reading:

Note how they begin and end the story. There are a ton of rather contradictory pieces of advice about starting stories, so see how they do it in the stories you enjoy. Don’t only look at the most popular stories, but look at your more obscure favorites.

See what strikes you. Is it fast or complicated scenes with a lot of emotions? Is it stark lines? Pithy dialogue? What do you remember the next day?

Pay attention to different styles. It’s not just whether they use past or present tense, first or third person. It’s whether the writing is more neutral or deeper inside character’s heads. Do they use italics? Parentheses? Other interesting stylistic choices? Take the ones you like and try them out in your own writing. See what works and what doesn’t.

Keep track of how they deal with other characters. Do we see a lot of secondary character each for very brief periods of time or are there a couple that show up a lot? How much information do we get about secondary characters? Do they have their own plots or do their plots revolve entirely around the main characters?

Count how many plots there are. Is there just one main plot or are there multiple subplots? Are the storylines mostly plot-based or character-based?

Pay attention to what you don’t like. If you don’t like what’s going on in a book or even just a scene, note what it is. Does the dialogue feel awkward? Are the characters inconsistent? Does the plot feel too convenient or cobbled together? Does the wording just feel off? See if you can spot those issues in your own writing, especially when reading a completed draft or beginning a later draft.

The Chrome browser exists to show you ads and track where you go so that Google can show you more ads. Please stop using Chrome. Firefox is open source, and while Mozilla is not perfect, it isn’t actively fucking evil the way Google is. It has a bazillion plugins, including various (FREE!) ad block plugins (I recommend uBlock Origins, which will even block YouTube ads – you can watch videos without interruptions again!). It will also function very effectively with a lot more tabs open than Chrome. I’ve got around 800 tabs open right now (not loaded, of course, except for maybe 2 dozen; it’s been a heavy browsing day), and my wife has between 2k and 3k at any time.

We are in the New Browser Wars. This time there’s a helluva lot of money up for grabs, because a lot of it is about running those ads. Monopolies are bad for consumers.

Just go download Firefox.

Firefox plugins I 100% recommend if you don’t want to be tracked (and want to cost corporations money)

AdNauseam is an adblocker that generates false clicks on the ads it blocks, which costs the corporations that pay for them money.

Privacy Possum messes with the tracking data collected about you, rendering it essentially useless

TrackMeNot generates random search terms across sites, meaning that any data collected about things you actually search is buried in a sea of random bullshit. Makes it very hard for people to figure out what you’re actually doing. You can block terms in the options, which means it won’t search for anything incriminating on your behalf (I think the word bomb is blocked by default)

WhatCampaign replaces tracking analytics used in website code with data that can’t be used to track you. I’m pretty sure it replaces it with “fuck off” by default.

I’m not adding links because tumblr will not show this up if I do, but you can search these on the Firefox addons site and they’ll come up.

listen. if you had an abusive parent who is good at behaving themselves around other people- ones who stay calm, and smile, and speak kindly when interacting with the public despite never doing that with you? you’re amazing. if you had to hear “your dad seems cool” or “i love your mom” and nod and feel the way they hurt you go unnoticed? you’re so strong.

it can feel like you’re making it up, because all your teachers really like them. or it can sting, when you see how theyre capable of being thoughtful and polite but they choose to hurt you anyways. but you are wonderful, and brave, and things will get better. you will have people who acknowledge how they treated you. you will thrive. keep fighting.
