Photographing women is a difficult task for a male photographer traveling in more conservative count

Photographing women is a difficult task for a male photographer traveling in more conservative countries. I can either try and sneakily take a candid or ask directly. Not wanting to disrespect anyone, I usually choose the latter option. I am often refused however, the reason being that they are Muslim or have overprotective husbands. Despite this, I continue to ask, the worst thing they can say is no.

In Rawanduz I again approached a group of women sitting in the shade. The elderly women quickly said no, saying that they were Muslim. I nearby woman called me over and allowed me to photograph her. She then led me to her family graveyard, plucked a flower and laid against the gravestone. I can only assume that the grave is that of her husband, this possibly a reason as to why she agreed to be photographed. Her tenderness and hospitality humbled me. I thanked her repeatedly for her openness. Before I left she handed me the flower and said goodbye. Seeing her was definitely a touching and moving experience, which shows a country still in the process of healing.

when i was eleven, my older brother passed away. he was fourteen, he loved blink 182 and the offspring, he played guitar and was even a part of a band (MFIC; motherfuckers in charge). he was impatient but kind, and he was the best brother i could have asked for. it has been nine years since he passed and i have forgotten what his voice sounded like.

i have forgotten what it was like to have a constant companion, someone who was always there to talk to. when he was with me, i felt protected. nobody could hurt me with my big brother there. he never let anyone rag on me, even if he was actively doing so (which was often.)

i loved my brother dearly, even though he most likely regarded me as the annoying kid sister most of the time. I liked to be wherever he was, doing whatever he was doing. i admired him more than i had or ever will admire somebody else, with no regard to how irritated he would get at my constant presence. nobody likes to hang out with their little sister 24/7.

looking back i am glad i pestered him so much to play with me, as now i have more memories to look back on. like playing on the stairs that led up to his room, slowly moving up each step until reaching the top, where i would be so loud and obnoxious until he came out and let me play the playstation with him.

or when we would play swords in the backyard, when we shot empty soda cans with bb guns, when he dared me to eat a jalapeno out of our mom’s garden (which i did, in one big bite.) and then had to run inside to get a glass of milk while i cried and blubbered in the middle of the yard. when we were playing storm troopers in the middle of winter, and my tongue got stuck to a metal pole.

while i may not remember his voice, his smell, or the small details of him as a person, i do have the memories of the time spent together. nine years have passed and my brother has become more of an idea than a person. i think about him everyday, if not when i wake up then before i fall asleep.

i think about what my life would be like with my big brother still by my side. would i carry the same ideas, would i have the same passions? who would i be had he not passed away? sometimes i wish i was her, oblivious to loss and able to live a complete childhood.

but i figure every life has a purpose, so does every death. in the short time i had my brother, i had the best childhood any kid could ask for. i had a partner in crime, who i thought would be there forever.

after nine years you would think you would find a way to fill that hole that is left in your hear after losing a loved one. you find ways to distract from it, to busy yourself. but you never find exactly what you need to feel complete again, simply because you are unable to.

i love you big brother, you stay in my heart always.

On December 9, 1867, the Zakynthian writer Grigorios Xenopoulos was born in Constantinople. His family moved to Zakynthos soon after, where Gregorios spent his youth until 1883, when he enrolled in the University of Athens to study physics and mathematics. He never completed his studies: already in the first year, he had begun writing literature, which was his sole source of income at the time.

Xenopoulos was a prolific writer. He wrote over 80 novels and a large number of short stories. He first became known to the literary world through his first novel: “Ο Άνθρωπος του Κόσμου” (O anthropos tou kosmou, “Man of the world”). This novel and his next one, “Nikolas Sigalos” (1890), written in the New Athenian style, were not successful. He then turned for inspiration to his birthplace, Zakynthos, and as a result wrote some of his best novels, such as “Magaret Stefa” (1893) and Κόκκινος Βράχος (Kokkinos Vrachos, “Red Rock”, 1905). These were followed by further novels in the New Athenian style: “Ο πόλεμος” (O polemos, “War”, 1914), “Οι Μυστικοί Αρραβώνες” (I mystikoi aravones, “The Secret Engagement”, 1915) and the Ionian School novel “Laura” (1915), which was also one of his most admired. But his most ambitious work was the trilogy: “Πλούσιοι και φτωχοί” (plousioi kai ftochoi, “The Rich and the Poor”, 1919), “Τίμιοι και άτιμοι” (Timioi kai atimoi, “The Honest and the Dishonest”, 1921), “Τυχεροί και άτυχοι” (Tycheroi kai atychoi, “The Lucky and the Unlucky”, 1924). Other novels include: “Αναδυομένη” (Anadyomeni, 1923), “Ισαβέλλα” (Isabella, 1923), “Τερέζα Βάρμα-Δακόστα” (Teresa Varma-Dakosta, 1925).His novels are set in Athens and Zakynthos, and he is considered to be a proponent of the “urban novel”. The main theme of his works is love, particularly love between people of different classes. His work has been criticised for putting quantity ahead of quality, with many sequels, and for pandering to the tastes of his readers with scenes which were sexually provocative for the period. However he has also been praised for his narrative strength and ability to hold the readers attention.

Bob Marley At The Hammersmith Odeon, 1976:

“Trenchtown Rock’ filled the hall, occupying space and time like a solid object. Down front it was like dancing in the middle of a choir while simultaneously getting a full massage – plus you could watch the band with the I Threes dignifiedly swaying in the breeze and Marley moving fluid behind the centre mike, radiating the strange kind of intensity of presence that a small man can use to dominate a stage.”

“The band generated what seemed like infinite quantities of energy with virtually no apparent effort; a judoka’s mastery of stress and balance and pressure. Family Man Barrett’s bass was a huge granite Odin humming in the bath and the guitars did almost as much dancing as the audience.”
