Giant Clams: Unsung Heroes for Coral

By: Brian Stallard

giant-clam

Giant clams have been a hard-to-miss part of coral reef ecosystems for the greater part of the last 38 million years. However, experts will be quick to admit that the part they play in these incredible systems remains rather shrouded in mystery. Now a new study hopes to pull back the veil and further our understanding of these clam colossi. (Photo : Flickr: BBM Explorer – Rob)

This enthusiastic Bernard Villemot lobster is surely enough to persuade anyone to buy one of Philips’ 1950s’ fridges.

Get someone who looks at you the way this lobster looks at a fridge.

Insane to me how there is no lobster Pokemon. Tons of crustacians, yes. But nothing dedicated to being a lobster. yet, we have pokemon that represent all three members of the Syngnathinae family.

Horsea? Seahorse, naturally
Skrelp? Sea Dragons!
Gorebyss? Pipefish babey!
Lobster? Nah.

this is a motherfucking injustice is what it is. Crawdaunt does NOT count he is a crawdad. Clawitzer is a pistol shrimp try the fuck again. everything else is a crab, barnicle, or isopod. where are the lobsters.

Our first contestant has a slight disadvantage because I did accidentally spoil its look by uploading it to a different post, but it’s fun, fresh and structurally interesting! That center ridge really accentuates the eyes.

[The Hague, KB KA 16 fol. 113v]

Contestant 2 is going for a bolder look. The red pops, the orifices are unexpected, and I love that its claws are mostly hooves. That’s commitment to a style!

Contestant 3, bringing literal star power: the zodiac sign Cancer. The claws are sharp, both faces convey indecipherable emotions, and I feel uncomfortable if I look at it for too long. A standout!

My favorite is this sadly unsourced one I found on an image search that I am just taking their word that it’s supposed to be a crab

Love this mess! It’s from the British Library Lansdowne MS 383, f. 5v & like any of the zodiac cancers it could be a crab, lobster, crayfish or etc., but whichever it is, it definitely shouldn’t look like that.

Here are some other zodiacal depictions:
