#lotr on prime
A month ago when we first saw that the Elves have short hair in the new show I was like “ew not wtf this is an abomination” but then I cut my own hella long elven hair off irl and now look like Amazon Elrond and am nowlike
And am now accidentally all for the short hair elf thing
I’ve become my own worst enemy in this fandom
Hey lol is anyone else noticing that all the racists are coming out of the woodwork now that people are seeing that the Amazon LotR cast isn’t 100% white…?
(And ironically the cast listings were available long before now, but it’s only now some are acting surprised)
Tbh it’s so frustrating seeing top comments on LotR posts being about how terrible the “woke” casting is? And it’s not like these comments are pushed to the bottom because of unpopularity. People agree. I don’t know what’s happening :(
Anyone else kind of scared/anticipatory/excited to see what the LotR Prime show is gonna do to the fandom? It’ll be a revival, but I do hope it’s a good revival.
I don’t know how I feel about the modernization (is that the right word?) of LotR. Tolkien’s values clash with a lot of priorities of the current day, so I’m wondering how these issues will be navigated. Of course, there’s going to be the unavoidable irreverence that comes with modern live action media that I definitely won’t enjoy (e.g. objectifying buzzfeed articles about the hottest characters; or news with erroneous misconceptions about the world, etc, the latter of which already has been happening). Also, I don’t like Bezos.
I’m too young for this, haha. I don’t want to be gatekeep-y but at the same time I don’t like immature fans. It’s a toss-up. I have a feeling there’s going to be some discourse very soon about the sudden influx of second/third-gen fans suddenly entering what is definitely a first-generation world. LotR has a very long and important fandom legacy, and it’s arguably shaped many aspects of the subculture of fandom-hood, from fic tropes to Figwit. I wasn’t there for most of it, partially because I’m not old enough to have participated, but I think I do know a little sliver of its history – just enough to feel like it should be viewed with respect.
This is just a ramble. Not really any point to it other than an enthusiastic and tense reaction to the images released on the Instagram account. Penny for your thoughts??
anyway silm fandom what’s the vibe rn

Alright babes, the time has come. I’m shifting into
Second Age mode
I think at this point my current attitude with regard to the Amazon series is this:
•watchful waiting. We’ll see what this Super Bowl trailer reveals.
• thinking of it as Tolkien-esque or Tolkien-adjacent rather than Tolkien based.
•also thinking of it as fanfic by someone who wants to jump right in to the middle of canon events but isn’t super attached to the actual canon or timeline and really likes to create OCs. And who basically noped on Hugo Weaving’s Elrond.
•at least we may get Howard Shore music, if rumors are accurate.
•my ideas can remain my own and that my headcanons may actually feel more valid after this. And that is a comforting thought.
In seven hours the glory of each tree waxed to full and waned again to naught; and each awoke once more to life an hour before the other ceased to shine. Thus in Valinor twice every day there came a gentle hour of softer light.

“Now the thought of Morgoth dwelt ever upon Turgon; for Turgon had escaped him, of all his foes that one whom he most desired to take or to destroy. And that thought troubled him, and marred his victory, for Turgon of the mighty house of Fingolfin was now by right King of all the Noldor; and Morgoth feared and hated the house of Fingolfin, because they had the friendship of Ulmo his foe, and because of the wounds that Fingolfin gave him with his sword. And most of all his kin Morgoth feared Turgon; for of old in Valinor his eye had lighted upon him, and whenever he drew near a shadow had fallen on his spirit, foreboding that in some time that yet lay hidden, from Turgon ruin should come to him.”

Yes, the new promotional photos are awful (Dwarves without beards? Elves with short hair? 52-year-old Celebrimbor?), but let’s not forget the real reason to hate this show: it’s made by Amazon, which is literally the antithesis of everything LOTR is about. Let’s get this trending on Twitter:

Not that we didn’t already surmise this but:
“The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men….”

This poster has been confirmed to be Celebrimbor but I’m going to ignore it, I was convinced it’s Elrond
