Full Color ~$40

Finally uploading, eh Jabbah? And its an armor set, no less!

Do you remember Tarakadi? The Temnoceran I drew for @rpbattleman? Well, this is the armor you get from it. We went with a ‘barbarian’ style with a touch of robot in there (because the bugs are always modeled after robots, I guess).

Drawing armor is a challenge for me, but I really do enjoy it. Do you still like it? I want to draw stuff like this more often. Stay tuned!

Monster Ecologies: Nerscylla and Shrouded Nerscylla

Entry 44 - Nerscylla and Shrouded Nerscylla

Name:Nerscylla and Shrouded Nerscylla

Aliases:Shadow Spider for Nerscylla and Corpse Spider for Shrouded Nerscylla

Classification:Arthropod, Temnoceran

Biology:Nerscylla are the first discovered specimens of the Temnoceran classification, a class of arthropod that developed from a particular branch of arachnids. Its pale white body has a similar frame to that of spiders, but the presence of four legs and a set of forelimbs sets them apart from their arachnid counterparts. Rather than the typical pedipalps seen in most arachnids, the monster possesses a set of mandibles that can be extended out from its body to snag unsuspecting prey. Their abdomen is capable of producing silk, which is used in a multitude of ways such as forming webs, wrapping up objects or as a means of traversal. This abdomen also hides a retractable stinger, which can produce either a tranquilizing fluid or a noxious venom. This tranquilizing fluid is automatically produced by Nerscylla upon birth, but the venom is acquired through different means explained further below. So much of this venom is present in its body however, that it often leaks out of pores and hardens into large purple crystals. Shrouded Nerscylla came to be from a genetic mutation that resulted in the monster being incapable of producing venom, although gradual evolution has resulted in it developing numerous different characteristics compared to standard Nerscylla. One such adaptation is a dark purple exoskeleton to aid in its more nocturnal lifestyle.

Behaviour:Nerscylla are like nearly all monsters in that they are very aggressive and territorial, but they also possess remarkable intelligence unseen in any other arthropods. They seem to have knowledge of their own shortcomings, naming their somewhat frail exoskeleton and weakness to electrical attacks. To overcome this, they cloak themselves in skin they have ripped from their favorite prey of Gypceros. The Shrouded subspecies instead use the skin of a Khezu, as their weaknesses to electrical attacks are now replaced by icy attacks. The rather absorbent skin of the Khezu also helps the Temnoceran capture moisture in its harsh environment. The females of both regular Nerscylla and their subspecies are also remarkably caring parents, wrapping the egg of their young in Gypceros or Khezu hide to serve as a food source once it hatches and carrying it around on their backs until it becomes strong enough to fend for itself.

Habitat:Nerscylla often choose to establish their territories in forested areas, building their nests amongst the trees. Some specimens were found living in the Volcanic Hollow when the volcano had become dormant, but many have since moved out once it became active again.  A select few still remain in portions that were unaffected by the return of the lava. Shrouded Nerscylla instead live in deserts, spending the majority of the day in caves but venture out at night to search for food.

Diet:Nerscylla are carnivores, but their diet consists primarily of smaller monsters while only occasionally hunting herbivores like Kelbi, Slagtoth and Aptonoth. They instead prefer to hunt creatures like Congalala, Bulldrome, Seltas, and numerous Theropod Bird Wyverns. Their favourite prey is Gypceros, which is a vital part of Nerscylla lifestyle. Alongside using their hides as a primitive form of armor, the Poison Sacs of these Wyverns are also consumed by the Temnoceran. By doing this, they then develop the ability to produce venom inside their bodies. Shrouded Nerscylla lack the ability to ever produce this venom even if they feed on Gypceros, but have since overcome this limitation. Through preying on Desert Seltas and Khezu, they instead produce a paralyzing toxin rather than a poisonous one.

Attack Method: Nerscylla lack physical power when compared to other monsters of similar size, but instead overwhelm their opponents using speed and a wide variety of ailments. They chip down the strength of their enemies using poison before wrapping them up in silk or putting them to sleep, often finishing them off with strikes from their extendable jaws. When in enclosed spaces, they’ve been known to swing around using their webs or climb on the walls and ceiling. Shrouded Nerscylla attack in a much similar way, but exchanges the poisoning for paralysis and shows increased skill with their web swinging abilities.

Place in the Food Chain: Nerscylla and Shrouded Nersylla occupying the same role in their respective food chains, being a middle position above some monsters but below others. Despite feeding on many monsters smaller than them, both Temnocerans have to be extremely wary of numerous larger creatures. Nerscylla have to keep an eye out for threats such as Rathalos, Tetsucabra or Najarala while the Shrouded subspecies instead have to watch out for monsters like Tigrex, Nibelsnarf or Diablos.

This has been a report on the Nerscylla and Shrouded Nerscylla. Thank you for reading!

I wasn’t originally planning to enter the Monster Hunter fan forge, but when this idea hit me… I had to. I’d greatly appreciate some nice ratings!
