LIVE

Peeps, if you’re at all interested in your family’s history (or even if you’re not, future generations might be): ask the people from your grandparents’ and your parents’ generation to go through family photos with you and label them. People’s names, and, ideally, their connections to family members.

This is probably even more important now that most people have switched over to digital photos. So much personal history is going to be lost within the next couple of generations if we don’t take steps to preserve it.

We have so many anonymous photos in our family, dating back to the earliest days of commercial photography. But we also have some gems, like this one in which somebody has written the names _of the horses_ on the back.

Daisy, Stout, and Diamond: you are not forgotten

Bonne fête, La Tour Eiffel.

Construction of the Eiffel Tower was completed on this day in 1889 in Paris, France. Théophile Féau captured the making of the landmark by taking photographs at 15 day intervals between 1887-1889, resulting in “Building the Eiffel Tower,” a series of 11 photos.

The Getty Images Instagram Grant, run in collaboration with Instagram, supports visual artists using Instagram to tell important stories about communities underrepresented by mainstream media.

2015 grant recipient Dmitry Markov (@dcim.ru), resides in Pskov, Russia, and volunteers for multiple children’s charities. He received a grant for his Instagram portfolio that documents social issues close to his heart and features powerful portraits of the people he encounters everyday in places like railway stations and street markets.

“I started an Instagram account, using only my phone to document what I see not only in the charities I volunteer with, but in my everyday life in Pskov. Instagram has enabled me to share my photographs instantly, exposing under-told stories and exposing situations others, including city administrations, often turn a blind eye to.” [email protected]

The Getty Images Instagram Grant is accepting applications until April 12. All entrants must complete the online application at gtty.im/grants to be considered, and this year we’re encouraging visual artists to submit Instagram portfolios of a range of mediums including digital art, photography and video footage.

An Index? An Inventory?  Tell Me More!

While processing a series of photographs from the Angeles National Forest, our volunteer Sara discovered many amazing items: indexes to the images with short narrative descriptions of each.  While this may not seem very important, our unit has processed thousands of photographs in the past with little or no context for them. The result is hours in researching the background of the images using the little information that was provided when the records were transferred to us.

Without the indexes to this set of photographs, we could tell that they were images of areas burned in wildfires, as well as damages caused by storms and flooding in the burn areas.  However, we would not have precise information such as geographic locations and names, dates the images were taken, or names of individuals involved.

Today, we would like to share with you a very small portion of this collection.  Included is one index or “Photographic Record” and some of the images it references.  These images were captured a few months after the August, 1951 Cherry Canyon Fire which burned thousands of acres in and around the Saugus Ranger District of the Angeles National Forest.  These images capture storm damage caused to structures and landscape in the areas burned in that fire.

We hope you enjoy these images as much as we have.  Keep an eye on the National Archives Catalog as a description of this series of photographs will be there in the near future.

Meet the bird that captured the heart of this Canadian soldier… and maybe some of his things.

The four photographs below show a jackdaw who was found sometime during the Battle of the Somme. It became the mascot of this Canadian Army Service Corp despite the fact that he was a bit of thief and “continually stealing” from them. The pictures below were taken in March, 1917.

Mukadderat…

National Doughnut Day goals.

This pastry princess—check out that crown!—is from the Sally L. Steinberg Collection of Doughnut Ephemera in our National Museum of American History’s Archives Center. (Steinberg also considered herself a doughnut princess, as her grandfather Adolph Levitt was America’s original “doughnut king,” having developed the automatic doughnut making machine and founded the modern American doughnut industry.)

We’ve got more than a baker’s dozen in our collections. Find your favorite Smithsonian doughnut to snack on

When is a photograph more than a picture?

These stunning images are a preview of the first special exhibition at our @nmaahc, which explores the stories behind more than 150 photographs and related objects from their collection.

The images, by established and emerging photographers from the 19th century to the present, show a range of American experiences. They challenge you to look beyond the surface to consider their significance in history, their cultural meaning, and your own perspective.
