“… “I’m taking action because I feel desperate,” said U.S. climate scientist Peter Kalmus, who along with several others locked himself to the front door of a JPMorgan Chase building in Los Angeles. A recent report found that the financial giant is the biggest private funder of oil and gas initiatives in the world.

“It’s the 11th hour in terms of Earth breakdown, and I feel terrified for my kids, and terrified for humanity,” Kalmus continued. “World leaders are still expanding the fossil fuel industry as fast as they can, but this is insane. The science clearly indicates that everything we hold dear is at risk, including even civilization itself and the wonderful, beautiful, cosmically precious life on this planet. I actually don’t get how any scientist who understands this could possibly stay on the sidelines at this point.” …”

Homo Sapiens will suffer a die-back in the next thirty years. Make your plans around that central event.

HOLY FUCK THE AMAZON WORKERS WON THEIR UNION VOTE

im running so late to this but holy fucking shit this is historic

last thing - while unions are obviously a collaborative effort and this incredible victory is the result of the hard work and sacrifices of many different people i think it’s absolutely essential to highlight the role of ALU’s founder chris smalls rn

chris was fired by amazon in 2020 for organizing a walk-out in the wake of their absolutely criminal handling of covid protocols in staten island. in a meeting with bezos amazon execs were later caught bragging that he wasnt “smart” or “articulate” enough to organize against them…now he’s helped facilitate the first successful union vote in amazon’s history - eat shit!

[ID: 1st image is a screenshot that reads:

“With 2,654 votes in favor and 2,131 votes against, the overwhelming victory will allow more than 8,000 workers at the facility to team up with the Amazon Labor Union. The ALU was formed last year by Chris Smalls, a process assistant at the warehouse who was fired in March 2020 for organizing protests over Amazon’s COVID-19 protocols.”

2nd image is a tweet from Amazon Labor Union @ amazonlabor from 1 April 2022 that reads:

“It’s official !! Amazon Labor Union is the first Amazon union in US HISTORY !! POWER TO THE PEOPLE! #UnionStrong #ALUforthewin”

The 3rd and 4th images are photos of Chris Smalls, a Black man with a beard and sunglasses wearing red. In the 3rd photo, he speaks into a microphone in front of a demonstration. In the 4th, he faces the camera, holding a piece of an Amazon box, which has been lit on fire. /id]

For eveyone griping about looting, here are some alternative things to get mad about!

1.) if we are mad at looting then we should return every single artifact and curio in our museums that we have looted from other countries.

2.) Maybe we should start arresting and prosecuting the assholes who buy diapers and sanitizer in bulk to illegally resell at an insane cost while poor families who actually need those items can’t get any because of it.

3.) You should be mad at the double standard of how police treat different protests. Armed “protesters”were allowed to enter a government building WITH THEIR GUNS to politically intimidate, threaten & terrorize politicians who wanted to protect the community with the quarantine. Some even physical pushing police in riot gear but the police did not react and instead protected them. But protesters who seek justice and accountability for a black man brutally murdered by a police officer get beaten, shot at, pepper sprayed and tear gassed.

4.) the more radical protesters who have been causing property damage WHO DO NOT represent the majority of peaceful protestors are going to be grouped as a whole by the right wing to excuse the police brutality against the regular law abiding protestors and black people.

5.) And finally and most importantly, the four fired officers each have a prior history of police brutality that was swept under the rug and ignored STILL have not been charged with MURDERING the unarmed, handcuffed and helpless George Floyd. Everyone SHOULD be irate at THAT!

In Hong Kong, umbrellas are more than just protection from rain or glaring sunshine. They have become tools for expression, privacy and self-defense—and that’s made them a staple of the anti-government demonstrations that have rocked the city over the past three months.

The humble brolly has been a symbol of resistance in Hong Kong since 2014, when the city’s pro-democracy protests became known as the Umbrella Movement. Now, Hong Kong’s police force has labeled umbrellas as weapons, and Chinese e-commerce sites like Taobao and AliExpress no longer sell them to customers in Hong Kong.

“I tried to purchase umbrellas and I just can’t” on those platforms, said Kelvin Yeung, a 22-year-old university student who has participated in about half of the marches this summer. “I cannot put it into my basket if the destination is Hong Kong.”

Over the past 100-plus days, protesters have demonstrated dozens of ways to use umbrellas that have nothing to do with rain. Here are just a handful of examples, as well as what some protesters have to say about them. Many declined to give their full name for fear of punishment, and none are pictured.

citymaus:

An estimated 1.7 million people in Hong Kong—A QUARTER OF THE POPULATION—defied police orders to stage a peaceful march after a rally in a downtown park, after two months of increasingly violent clashes that have prompted severe warnings from Beijing and failed to win concessions from the city’s government.

Huge crowds filled Victoria Park on Sunday afternoon and spilled on to nearby streets, forcing police to block traffic in the area. Torrential rain came down an hour into the rally, turning the park into a sea of umbrellas. At the same time, protesters walked towards Central, the heart of Hong Kong’s business district, and surrounded government headquarters.”

some advice from Joyce Erin, neighborhood medic:

Please, please, please don’t pour milk on peoples’ faces who have been sprayed with any kind of chemical irritant. Milk, for a variety of reasons, may provide a momentary relief but is dangerous for our bodies in the long run. It can trap particles against your skin for longer prolonging your exposure to the chemicals, cause infections, and put bacteria in your eyes and face. Which is the opposite of what you need when dealing with chemical exposure. Additionally, the thick white substance will mark them clearly to the cops.

1. A clean water bottle with a sport top cap that will allow you to control the stream of water

2. Have your comrade kneel, ask if they have contacts in. If they do - have them take it out. I know it’s painful but contacts need to come out.

3. Ask them to try and keep their eyes open/blinking while you rinse them out. You are physically pushing the particles out of their eyes, which is easier when their eyes are open. Blinking will help too as you do this. That is our bodies natural way to clear out irritants.

4. Use a diagonal motion starting at the bridge of the nose and use a steady stream of water to flush out towards the corner of eyes away from face. You are physically removing the chemical irritants for someone’s faces. Repeat on other side.

5. You may need to do this multiple times. IT IS WORTH IT. Think of it like an eye wash in your high school chemical class. This is actually removing the irritants from your face.

6. Contact free spray water in their mouths and if you can have them rinse their mouth and spit far away from you (this is tough with COVID).

7. When they get home do not wear contaminated clothes into the house as much as possible. Put them straight into a washer at high heat. Run an empty cycle between to get rid of the chemicals.

8. Get in the shower right away. Use sturdy soap and let the water run off of your body. Do your best to avoid contaminated water entering your face or genital areas. That is not comfortable.

9. Drink LOTS of water, rest, and listen to your body afterwards. These chemicals impact us and you will need time to recover and heal.

While people are inclined to whip out their phones and film when they see something alarming happening, those videos are not always recorded in a way that can be used as evidence in a legal proceeding or to support advocacy tactics.

At the human rights organization WITNESS, where I work as the senior U.S. program coordinator, we’ve learned that video has a greater chance of making an impact when it’s filmed ethically and strategically, and released in coordination with advocacy and legal efforts. Using the camera in your pocket can be a valuable way to ensure the world bears witness to abusive policing and systemic racism, help hold authorities accountable, and advocate for the real safety of our communities.

emo-church:

If you’ve seen this going around on social media PLEASE do not follow this advice.

  1. If you’re going to a protest you shouldn’t wear so much makeup, especially around your eyes. Tear gas can cling to makeup. Same with lotion, sunscreen, and face paint. This makes it a lot harder to get rid of.
  2. This is outdated. Many facial recognition software will not be tricked by it anymore. The studies supporting this are not recent, and even back then it wasn’t entirely perfect.
  3. Having a strange design on your face can draw more attention to you. Remember, there are other ways to figure out a person’s identity aside from using facial recognition. Looking distinct enough can make it easier to track you. You likely want to look as boring as possible, to blend in with the crowd.

You’re probably better off wearing a face mask, sunglasses/goggles, a hat/hood. Dress casual, don’t wear bright colors, try to avoid looking so distinct.

Most importantly, stay with large groups of people and avoid being alone. Not only will this make it harder to identify you, it will also keep you safer physically. People are stronger as a group and if god forbid someone gets hurt then there will be other people around to help out. We need to protect each other.

Also please do not attack the people who posted this. They likely had good intentions. Just let them know that this doesn’t work anymore and it isn’t safe.

utenas:

for people who are unaware of why the riots in minneapolis started happening, here’s the facts:

  • it wasn’t george floyd’s protesters who started reacting violently; it was the cops.
  • the protest was peaceful until the cops showed up in riot gear, and started using water cannons, followed up by tear gas and rubber bullets. i got videos from friends who were there, of people screaming and running away from the cops shooting the water cannons, rubber bullets and throwing tear gas at them. they were even shooting at the protesters dragging people away to get medical attention.
  • speaking of medical attention, dispatch refusedto provide any medical attention to the protesters. people literally had to drive their bleeding friends to the hospital because they refused to send ambulances.
  • cops are using non-lethal weapons in a lethal way. they shot rubber bullets into people’s heads and injured them. there’s dozens of photos of protesters with bleeding head wounds from the rubber bullets.
  • multiple people used police scanners and heard that there were undercover cops pretending to be violent protesters who were throwing rocks and whatnot at the police, with dozens of eyewitness accounts confirming that information.
  • the person who instigated all the chaos last night (it was a fire at an autozone) with the looting and burning buildings is highly suspected to be an undercover cop pretending to be a protester, because the video of him keeps getting taken down. protesters tried to stop him but couldn’t because he had a hammer and they were scared for their safety.
  • the cops jammed cell phone towers and cut live streams to interrupt broadcasts and to prevent people from seeing what was really going on and who actually started the violence.
  • the cops lied about protesters being armed and about throwing rocks and are literally trying to continue the violence happening and yet no one is holding them accountable for that.
  • and during all this, the cop that murdered george floyd still hasn’t been arrested. he has had more than ten complaints filed against him and was involved in three other civilian shootings in the past. and yet he’s still out free along with his three other buddies involved, probably sitting on his couch while all this chaos is happening.

so don’t get it twisted. the cops just want to change the narrative to make it look like they’re the wounded and righteous party, when they’rethe ones who started reacting violently in the first place and are still acting violently. so don’t you everforget who started this tragedy and murdered someone, and who are continuing to react to the situation with violence.

Happy #juneteenth !!! before COVID, I had the amazing opportunity to work with Alabama Public Television and interview Alabama house representative Terri Sewell; THE FIRST Black woman to be elected congress in Alabama! was such an inspiration to hear about her experience as a young Black girl with the passion for change. Terri Sewell advocates for voting rights—well known for sponsoring the Voting Rights Advancement act: which would update the Voting Rights Act of 1965, by providing increased oversight over voting changes, updating the pre-clearance formula to oversee contemporary discrimination patterns, and expanding the power of the Attorney General to send federal observers to jurisdictions in areas at risk for discrimination during voting. (WE TOTALLY NEED THAT ATLANTA!). We discussed how to get your voice heard through voting even when you’re young (). We also got to (personally) weigh in on a vote she had to do after our meeting about whether or not to pass a bill against teen vaping. We need more Black faces in legislature

workingclasshistory:

On this day, 2 January 2020, residents of Antofagasta, Chile, held a fake protest for a stray dog named El Vaquita in order to trick him to visiting a veterinarian.
El Vaquita (“little male cow”) is one of several famous street dogs in the country, who frequently join demonstrations and protests, and instinctively side with them during confrontations with the police. During one clash, El Vaquita was shot by police with a riot shotgun and injured by a pellet. He would not allow himself to be captured, and had repeatedly refused to be adopted, so no one could take him to the vet.
So instead, local people organised a fake demonstration, which he then joined, which led him voluntarily to the vets where his injuries were treated. In 2019, in a poll by the local newspaper El Diario, he was voted “character of the year”, surpassing all of the humans.
We have posters and other items commemorating other protest dogs Negro Matapacos and Loukanikos. Check them out here: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/collections/animalshttps://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1890037934514681/?type=3

The Retiring Vampire came back to Montezuma after traveling Costa Rica for four weeks and wrote thousands of words for this column. Upon his return, the words fell off the page. Only spiritual science fiction remained. Considered by the bat, as the greatest scientist of all time, Nikola Tesla, envisioned the 2020 breakaway:

“The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.“

And like in a good sci-fi movie with a gut-punch twist, we forgot about the warming temperatures. The veil between science and sci-fi dissolved. With one sigh, we agreed to accept into the arms of our families the pairing of the decade, a marriage of convenience between science and spirituality. A rare case where everybody is right, and nobody is wrong.
