Plants vs obesity
Seaweed isn’t technically a plant, but it does have some serious plant power.
Researchers found that alginate from seaweeds, especially kelp, helps to stop the body from digesting fat. And we don’t get the side effects that come with other obesity treatments. Alginate is in lots of foods we eat, but there isn’t enough to do the trick.
Fat busting alginates are easily extracted and incorporated into other foods. When researchers used it in bread, tasters actually preferred the seaweed bread. No seaweed flavour, same great texture, extra fat busting magic.
This is one more way that everyday plants (and seaweed) are doing amazing things.

Sunset at Tràigh á Chorail, Claigan, Isle of Skye.
Even though it’s called Coral beach, it’s not really coral but crushed bleached skeletons of red coralline seaweed (Maërl) that makes the water look tropical blue when the sun comes out.

Only a few days left. Today was a busy, busy day so I forgot to take a picture. Thankfully, one of my coworkers did!
We had a delicious mixed rice, cucumber pickles, a very slimy noodle soup. It featured okra heavily but had a mild taste. Finally, lots of fried smelt. There was also a jelly for dessert. It was the tanebata festival so it was star themed.

ANOTHER request lunch. Wow! Three in one month but this time it wasn’t karaage. This time we had steak and onion and potato salad! Very unique. Though egg drop soup and wakame seaweed rice made a repeat appearance. This time a blueberry crepe instead of a chocolate one. Overall, really good.

Pretty good lunch on wednesday. Salmon (with a few bones) a nice wilted pickled salad. A very hearty miso soup with lots of tofu. A slice of frozen pineapple for dessert. The rice was ‘seikhan’, or red bean rice. Sticky and delicious.

A nice, solid lunch. A tempura cake of fish and veggies. A decent salad of seaweed and cucumbers. Finally, a potato and pork dish to eat with rice.
