#121: Siege’s End

Summary (serial): Kuthumae’s a highly trained mercenary captain who’s pulled off the impossible (and the extremely improbable) many times. It’s had its costs; on the last mission, while he pulled off the impossible job and got his team home alive, he got stuck between dimensions, in a plane outside the normal flow of time. There he met a girl - because if one person can be stuck there, why not two? Rina is the sheltered-yet-traumatized daughter of a noble family on an entirely different world from Kuth; a world of goddesses and wishes, imprisoned in that dimension so that she may never realize the full extent of her powers. Not that she’s likely to; she volunteered to be put there. When the two meet, they each prove the key to the other’s freedom - and we’d say they hold the keys to each other’s hearts, but frankly when it comes to People, we’re talking about a pair of dumbasses here.

Summary (this arc): Kuthumae and Rina are welcome to live in the strange, multidimensional, post-apocalyptic city of Andeliin. But is that really a good idea? They know only the bare bones of its history and circumstances, but they do know it was until quite recently the capital of a very unpleasant empire. Who knows who might come calling, seeking to tear down what’s left - and anyone left alive inside?

There’s a romance here, but it’s a slow burn one. Let’s put it this way. 104 chapters in, we FINALLY got the Three Words. And it’s STILL Complicated.

Rating: Mature (violence, language)

Warnings: Discussion of rape, depression, PTSD, generally questionable situations. (Not all the time by any means, but they’ll be there.) What can I say, I like quandaries.

This week:

The Gentleman’s Siege comes to an end. While that’s kind of a problem for the people of the city of Andeliin, the Specialists aren’t paying it much attention. Gudrun’s awake, and it’s starting to look like they might have just bought a very large, very expensive, very angry paperweight.

You can join my Patreon for as little as one dollar a month, which gives you access to story chapters four weeks ahead of everyone else! (Not a bad bargain, eh?) Or, if you’re less committed, my Ko-Fi link is below, and I’ll happily accept whatever you feel willing to send. If you’re as broke as I am but still want to show me some encouragement, liking or (oooooh) reblogging these story posts would help me find new readers. Or, hey, just a reply to let me know you’re enjoying the story. (Or if you have questions. You can also send me questions.) I know I post these every week, but I genuinely have no idea who’s reading

This week:

One gets up, and another is knocked down. Kuth learns something helpful (and I feel it’s important to note that Specialists are typically touch-starved), and then learns something dangerous.

#123: Rina’s Day

Summary (this arc): In an unprecedented bargain, the worlds of Arsu and Andeliin have exchanged the services of dozens if not hundreds of Specialists for ownership of the Tyrant of Andeliin’s former flagship - a ship that can cross the layers of reality. Or at least it could, before the Tyrant was turned into a lake of glass and Sif blew a very large hole straight through its alien engines. But no big, right? They just have to figure out how it crosses the layers, how its engines work, and fix all the damage somehow. Right? Oh, and then figure out how to steer it. And - wait. Which way would ‘home’ be, if you have to walk it instead of jump?

This week:

Rina spends a day with Queen Rhynn, learning a little bit more about Andeliin in the process.

This week:

Gudrun gets a reminder - as if he needed one - that Kuth can be unpleasantly ruthless. There’s a problem with the newly acquired ship, and Gudrun becomes the living problem-detector to bring it to light…whether he wants to or not.
