Today marks Transgender Day of Remembrance, designated to honor transgender and gender non-conformin

Today marks Transgender Day of Remembrance, designated to honor transgender and gender non-conforming people who have been lost to anti-LGBTQ violence. ❤️

The honorary day was created by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith in 1999 after Rita Hester, a transgender woman, was murdered in 1998.

At least 22 transgender and gender non-conforming people ― the overwhelming majority of whom are Black transgender women ― have been killed in the U.S. in 2019 according to the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group.

Today we share their names and honor them. Learn their stories here.

Today is the transgender day of remembrance

375 gender diverse people were killed this year. 25 more than the last. 93 of them in their own homes. Lets hope 2022 will be a better year.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance2016. We remember. We will not forget. We will ally, flank and do whatever it takes to stand with trans folks, including the many bisexual+ trans people in the U.S. who face increased anti bisexual+ and anti transgender sentiments but still keep living, thriving and working to help us all b free.

In the name of the so many who came before, I send prayers up in the memory of Sylvia Rivera, trans bi+ Latinx icon FOR ALL transgender, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people in the world.

I hope that they, and my own beautiful nonbinary child, experience every day in the love they deserve.

I pray that the times the T in LGBT experience hatred or discomfort become rare, but *when* it does happen that trans people are quickly be surrounded in love and in light, with an explicitly anti-racist and a delightfully pro trans soft place to heal.

I pray as well that more and more cisgender people begin to celebrate the awesomeness of trans and nonbinary experience, for we should be a more grateful people to so often be blessed with bravery beyond measure.

I, and my family, personally pledge to more frequently open my home, heart and wallet to ensure that safety under the rule of the D.

I extend my thanks to all the trans allies of bisexual+ people, including bi+ trans folks who work without cease to see themselves authentically represented in the LGBTQIA movement. There would be too many names to list if BiNet USA were to call out all the trans leaders who have consistently stood bi us or with us, sometimes because they are us too and sometimes because they will do whatever it takes to ally us. Today, November 20, is the Trans Day of Remembrance, a day to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia.

We honor those who found the courage to be true to themselves in the face of transphobia.

Although I am not trans myself, day in and day out, your stories have given me the courage to live life to the fullest and not let adversity and homophobia be my downfall.

Those whose lives were taken shall never be forgotten for they are still among us. They are the very foundation of our community. We are not just a collection of random queer individuals. We have come together with a purpose. There is still a long way to go. We must look up to our trans siblings who were true to themselves despite being condemned, hated on, and taken away from us, and draw courage from them.

Violence and transphobia will never win. Community, truth, and acceptance shall prevail.

In your footsteps of truth and courage I shall follow. Now and always.

Thank you.

Rest in peace.

This post goes out to my 15 year old transgender friend, Connor who lost his life last year because of bullying from his own parents.

Please reblog this to honor my friend and each transgender person who has lost their life for no other reason than hate.

In honor of Trans Day of Remembrance, I drew portraits of all the trans people who were killed since this time last year that I could find pictures of. (Two are included as written names only–K.C. Haggard and Fernanda Coty Olmos.)

TDOR is a time for remembering all the trans lives lost to a system designed to fail them, and more of us have been killed this year than in any other. Plus, this is only the ones who were murdered; so many more are lost to suicide and drug overdose. Laverne was right–this is a state of emergency.

Today is the day to have a moment of silence for those innocent lives lost due to violence and hate towards the transgender community. Please keep these people in your thoughts today, and make their names a call for change, for acceptance, for understanding, and for love.

We remember today the victims of anti-transgender prejudice and violence as we observe the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR).

TDOR began as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. Hester is featured in this painting by Mary Button alongside an image of Jesus’ crucifixion and a news photo of an early TDOR vigil. The term “transgenders” is most commonly replaced today by “transgender people.”

TDOR 2020. Each candle represents one of the 350 transgender individuals killed this year globally. The United States, where I live, had 37 cases of fatal violence against trans people.

On this day, we remember those we have lost.

Statistics reported by Forbes and the Human Rights Campaign.

Happy Trans Day of Remembrance and Resilience!

A queue’d, quick sketch before I go away sans Wifi.

Even just since I came out, and even with the setbacks, things are getting easier for the people coming after me. I’m grateful for - and proud of - that every day.

[Description for screen readers: the phrase “Remember the dead, and fight like hell for the living” handwritten in black on a white circle. Within the white circle is a black circle, showing two hands holding onto each other, and one helping the other up. One hand wears a pink and blue bracelet with “TDORR” handwritten in white. Surrounding the hands are burning candles in trans pride colors: baby blue, pink, and white.]

Begin description for this set

Gif 1: In a car outside of the Crashdown, season 2 episode 8. Charlie sits in the driver’s seat, looking out the window. She turns to look at Liz (in the passenger seat, back to the camera) and smiles knowingly.

Gif 2: In Helena’s house, season 2 episode 12. Charlie stands in front of a work bench with several clear glass vials and flasks holding different colored liquids. She is using a pipet to carefully transfer one to the other.

Gif 3: In the police station, season 2 episode 13. Closeup on Charlie who stands looking at Jenna (off screen). She gives a small smile and nods slightly.

Bonus Gif: In the police station, season 2 episode 13. Charlie and Jenna are hugging. The first angle is on Charlie, she looks happy and has a small, satisfied smile. The scene cuts to an angle on Jenna, who is on the verge of relieved tears and is clutching her sister tightly.

Remembering today all the beautiful transgender people we’ve lost to transphobic violence. In the United States, we’ve lost 53 this year alone. Significantly more internationally and many more who have not been identified. Despite all the progress we’ve made, transphobic violence is everywhere. Selena Reyez-Hernandez, a Chicago trans woman, was murdered 30 minutes from where I live.

Preventing transgender violence is not an abstract concept. It’s done with concrete steps: providing safe, affordable housing, access to jobs, trans-affirming healthcare, calling out transphobia/transmisogyny in media and politics, calling out toxic masculinity, decriminalization of sex work and ending money bail.

Push for change with your politics. Push for change within your social circle. Push for change within your community and, if you are able to, push for change with your wallet. Support:

Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non-binary people are non-binary. We have existed since the beginning of time and we aren’t going anywhere. Our community and our allies are stronger than ever and we only grow stronger every day ✊️‍

People often spend Transgender Day of Remembrance reflecting on the hundreds and thousands of trans lives lost each year.

We suggest something additional. Let’s stop and ask ourselves how we can support trans people in Yellowknife so that no more lives are lost.

If you’re able to help IGBYK organize a Transgender Day of Remembrance event, please contact us at itgetsbetteryk @ gmail.com.
