Today I would like to offer free(for personal/non-commercial use) natural history coloring pages. This one’s based on the Cambrian explosion. Let me know what you think. Top has gray background to help if you only want to color the critters, bottom has white background if you want to choose the color there.

If you color one, please tag me and I will reblog it.

This beautiful fossil is that of an ancient Calymene Trilobite. It’s a beautifully preserved piece. Trilobites were very successful during their time on the planet, making these interesting fossils relatively common.

Trilobites, though now long exctinct, were marine arthropods (think spiders/crustaceans) that existed millions of years ago. The dates they occupied the earth range between 500 million years ago (the Cambrian period) up until 250 million years ago where they were wiped out along with most everything else during the mass extinction.

There are many different species and variations, and these interesting fossils are found in many different locations around the globe. This particular little soul was ethically sourced from Morocco. It’s currently available here.

Baltica, by Maija Karala:

“I was asked to illustrate a spread of fossils and reconstructed animals from what the Baltic Sea was like in the Ordovician. They asked for colourful animals, and that’s what they got.

In the Ordovician, what is now Northern and Eastern Europe formed a small continent called Baltica, at the time located well south of the Equator. Much of the continent was covered in shallow seas, and there was a rich biodiversity of marine animals. Some of them have been preserved as fossils in Estonia, Åland islands and other places.

Made for Sieppo, a children’s magazine published by The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation.”

Chengjiang Biota - the dawn of the vertebrates, by Brian Choo:

“Strange creatures swarm in shallow sea off the northern fringes of the Gondwanan supercontinent. In the unimaginably distant future, this ancient seabed will be exposed as the Maotianshan Shale on the lush flanks of scenic hills in eastern Yunnan (Chengjiang, Jinning and Anning Counties), China. The fossils of the Maotianshan, collectively called the Chengjiang Biota, give a priceless glimpse into the Cambrian Explosion, the comparatively sudden appearances of a bewildering diversity of animal body forms that herald the arrival of the Phanerozoic. It represents one of a handful of Cambrian localities in the world, along with the Burgess Shale of Canada and Sirius Passet of Greenland, to feature extensive soft tissue preservation. The Chengjiang Biota currently includes well over 100 identified species, including creatures close to the ancestry of the vertebrate lineage.”

This is a beautiful, 3.35" long, trilobite (Crotalocephalina gibbus) fossil from Atchana, Morocco.  It has been prepared in a “flying” pose by removing nearly all of the surrounding limestone. This leaves it floating above the rock on a pedestal. The preparation takes lot of time but the results are quite spectacular.

2.2" Walliserops Lindoei Trilobite Fossil From Issoumour, Morocco

This is a TOP QUALITY specimen (the best I’ve seen) of an rare Walliserops lindoei. It comes from the base of the El Otfal Formation near Issoumour, Morocco. This specimen is 2.2" long and the preparation was done by one of the by one of the top trilobite preparitors in the world, Hammi Ait H’ssaine who also discovered the bed this specimen came from.

1.4" Niobella Lindstroemi Trilobite - Rare Species

This is a beautiful, 1.4" long, prone example of a rare Ordovician trilobite from the Putilovo Quarry. It’s a Niobella lindstroemi, with very nice preservation. There is only some very minor restoration on two pleural tips on the right hand side.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet with over 25k described species, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to a hard exoskeleton (shell), they left a excellent fossil record.
