@is-the-snake-video-cute People in the notes are saying this is either a dominance or a mating response, so could I request a semi-professional-I-mean-you-deal-with-snakes-and-I-dont-know-a-turtle-blog take on this?
This is called claw fluttering, and it’s 100% a mating response! What’s happening is this turtle is seeing the painted nails, thinks they’re a turtle, and is trying to woo them.
Pretty cute, and no stress to the turtle at all. Some turtles won’t do this often, but others will claw flutter whenever they see anything they think might be a turtle, but they don’t have particularly great eyesight so they’ll claw flutter at things like their own reflection, bright nearby objects, and rocks.

For #turtletuesday this fashionable painted turtle while sporting quite the covering of duck weed (a current fashion trend amongst turtles of this swamp) decided it should add a feather to its outfit. Slow and Steady
Actually turtles in water are not that slow. Taking these pics was as much luck as skill.
Spotting a pond slider:
Sneaking up on it.
Carefully.
Onward, peering through the walk railings….
And if you’re wondering how I was able to consistently catch one turtle in view so much when they are fast in the water… there were actually twoturtles.
(There were actually at least three, but the Florida softshell is very, very fast indeed, and ducked before I got any pics at all.)

Green Sea Turtles (”Honu” in Hawaiian) begin their lives as omnivores, but then transition to an all vegetarian diet as they enter adulthood. They eat mostly sea grasses and algae and it is said that herbivorous turtles like these tend to host fewer parasitic organisms such as barnacles living on their shells, as a result of their vegetarian diet. Judging by the beauty and cleanliness of this dude’s shell, I’d say that the theory has some merit - photo taken at Maarehaa Kandu, Indian Ocean
