Saturday morning :)
Me on the spiral staircase at our BnB, Vienna.
Napoleon commissioned the statue group of Theseus killing a Centaur from Canova, but Franz I scooped the piece in 1823 and brought it to Vienna. He had the Theseum built in the Volksgarden for it. Eventually, it was moved to the Kunsthistorisches Museum. I’m there for scale - it’s not a big temple.
Romantic Roman ruins at Schloss Schoenbrunn, Vienna, 1778.
Most people don’t need to be able to explain what FASCES really are. I’m pleased with this photograph from the top of the Gloriette at Schloss Schoenbrunn - the axe inside the bundle of rods has seldom been clearer! Capital and Corporal Punishment, Roman magistrates, etc, etc.
The view FROM the Gloriette of the Palace.
