Orange-crowned Warbler sketch while waiting on my computer to analyze some data.
Yessss! Finally, I get to share the illustrations I did for Casey Youngflesh and his Ph.D research! Go check out Youngflesh et al. 2022 for the details, but in short, he used a whole lot of bird banding data (from The Institute for Bird Populations’ Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship program) to demonstrate differences in wing shape and body size within species, and how those things are actually changing in response to climate change (as the world gets warmer, birds get smaller). Crazy stuff!

I had been in search of this little guy for a few days now ever since I first spotted him just once last week. I was at my favourite tree to photograph at and had been there over an hour with practically no bird traffic whatsoever (very odd for that tree on a calm summer day). I was in a very deep thinking state so I decided to sit on the couch overlooking this tree through the window and try meditating, something I’ve been meaning to get back into as of recent. I did so for about 20 minutes, and when I opened my eyes low and behold right in the middle of the tree sat this little yellow warbler that I had been on the lookout for.
Crazy how things work sometimes.
The only thing that made me a little bummed about these pictures is that the top ones have the smallest little leaf blurred infront of the warblers face. So close to perfect photos. I’m sure I’ll be getting more pictures of this guy in particular, or else other warblers living in the area here this summer though, so look forward to those too.

This is a transition time,
there is a lot of coming and going right now. Migratory birds are passing through on their way north and there may be fun surprises if you get lucky. Here are some current regulars. And a screenshow from a Yellow-Rumped Warbler. He visited today and was so well-camoed that the camera did not catch him. It was sheer luck that I checked.

Palm Warbler
This was actually the 1st Warbler I saw this Spring! They’re the most cooperative warblers in my opinion! I posted the Yellow-throated Warbler 1st because it’s more rare in these parts.

Yellow-throated Warbler
This Warbler has been the main attraction at Franklin Park! I happened to check ebird yesterday and someone reported seeing it the day before, so I decided to go out and see if I could find it. Figured I’d take a chance. Soon as I arrived to the location, there it was singing and foraging in the trees. Not a lifer for me, but 1st time seeing it in Massachusetts. My 1st encounter was in Florida.

Blackburnian Warbler
I actually photographed one for the 1st time at Mount Auburn Cemetery last year. It was far away and high up in a tree. The pic wasn’t good, so I never posted it. However, I was still happy to see one for the 1st time. This is the 2nd encounter and I was able to get a little better pic. It’s not the kind of pic I was hoping for, but it’s better than the one I took last year. This Warbler isn’t cooperative at all!

Worm-eating Warbler #lifer
Starting the week of with a lifer! I went to Connecticut for a couple of days to go birding and as I was about to enter a nature trail, I heard a constant bird call. I had no idea what it was. I actually started to ignore it. I kept hearing it and something told me to use the sound ID on the Merlin app and when I saw it was a Worm-eating Warbler, I immediately got excited! There were actually a few of them in the area! I started moving closer to the sound and there it was, foraging in the tree. It actually was on the ground in the bushes scratching for insects too! Definitely thank Merlin for that identification, because I was totally going to keep walking.
