#writing prompts

LIVE

brattyfics:

I want to give writing some seasonal pieces a try this year, so I’m opening up requests! I’d also love to read some so feel free to join me! Please read the guidelines below.

  1. Personally, I’d like to stick to writing for the Mayans M.C. and Black Panther fandoms during this time, but you can write for any character from any fandom that you want.
  2. There is no word count. Your response can be 100 or 100,000 words. I’ll be writing until I feel the story is complete rather than trying to achieve a word count. I encourage you to do the same.
  3. This is a Fall Fluff Challenge, but feel free to write smut and yes, even angst, if it fits the prompt. I’d just ask that you make sure there is some element of fluff.
  4. Even though it’s a seasonal challenge, there is no deadline. Post when you feel good about what you’ve written.
  5. The premise of this ‘challenge’ is to pair a touch prompt (listed on the original post by @creativepromptsforwriting) with a fall-inspired word. For your convenience, here are some SeptemberandOctober words, plus another set of words created by me underneath the cut. Don’t see anything on these lists you like? That’s fine, use your own fall-inspired word. Fall means different things/traditions/activities/etc. to each person, so just do your thing. Don’t spend too much time worrying about the word.
  6. Just for clarity, here’s a few examples: “grabbing the other’s hand to pull them back from something” + 'rosebushes’. You can write about Muse A tripping/falling into a prickly rose bush while chasing an excited child they are babysitting. Have Muse B offer a hand to help them up. OR “only realizing it when they have to let go” + 'cave explorations’. Have your Muses meet while on a cave tour. They grab at each other when one starts to slip on the slimy cave floor or bats start swarming. Your muses don’t have to be in an established relationship for there to be fluff. Just have fun, be creative, and think outside the box.
  7. If you do participate, please tag me and tag it #BFFF Challenge, so I can find, read and reblog it.
  8. If you wish to send me a prompt to write for this challenge, please keep these guidelines in mind. I’ll probably cap it at about five prompts maximum and work on them as I can.
  9. Thanks in advance to anyone who chooses to participate in any way. I’ll create a master list of responses to the challenge as needed. If all goes well, I’d like to try this again for Winter using November, December, and January words.

…and hello, lovelies!

With the start of a new month, I thought it would be a good time to introduce some changes to our Twitter activity. While the blog has been wonderful for reaching out to all of you and answering your questions, it doesn’t provide us with much opportunity for back-and-forth and engaging with you during the writing process. Since this is the part of the writing community that I love the most, I knew there had to be a solution!

I know what you’re probably thinking right now:

Oh my gosh, I totally agree! How can I get more of Penney yelling excitedly at me about stories?

That’s so sweet of you! If that’s what you’re looking for, you’re in luck.

If you’re already following us (@plotlinehotline), you’ve probably noticed a slight increase in our Twitter presence as far as retweets and general threads are concerned. You’ve likely also come across the occasional prompts we’ve been posting.

This has been one of my favorite parts about working with our Twitter account for the past month— I’ve always loved working from prompts, and the chance to share those and talk with people about their stories has been amazing!

It has been a little sporadic, though, and with April’s Camp NaNoWriMo coming up, I’d really like to make March a great planning month in terms of prompts and story starters. To this end, I’ll be posting new prompts daily with a different theme (and corresponding hashtag) for each weekday to help spur our creativity and get a few scenes under our belt before the new month starts.

The PLHL’s Daily Prompt List

Miscellaneous Monday— Anything goes! These prompts don’t have a consistent theme to them, but will instead offer different challenges to keep in mind as you’re writing your scene.

Character Trait Tuesday— Tell us about your character! All of these will be related to certain qualities about your character that you can exemplify in your scene.

Workup Wednesday— Practice your planning skills! We’ll be posting a final line for you to consider, and the goal will be writing a scene that builds up to that line.

Theoretical Thursday— Change things up a little! These prompts posit a “What if” scenario that challenges you to look at your story/character from a new angle, offering perspectives that you may not have considered otherwise.

Photo Friday— They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and we want you to write them! Each prompt will consist of a single picture (with no dialogue or writing) that you can use as a basis for the scene you write.

Worldbuilding Weekend— It’s exactly what it sounds like! Each weekend, we’ll ask a new question about your world to help you build and develop the universe your characters live in. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a scene, but should help to get the ball rolling to save you a bit of time later!

I’m very excited to be introducing these prompts, and I’d very much like to hear about what you’ve decided to write and your thoughts on the process. As such, I’ll be regularly monitoring all of the above hashtags, as well as our NaNoWriMo-specific tag (#plhlsuperscribes).

I look forward to talking to all of you! Good luck with your planning, and happy writing!

Love,
Penney

I wanted to follow up with the results of last week’s fundraiser and say thank you to everyone who helped raise $1,807.80 for urgent humanitarian relief! Full details in this blog!

incubus-absolution:

They’d be able to know intimate life details, stuff about upcoming projects, how to accurately sound exactly like whoever they were imitating - things only that person would know.

writing-prompt-s:

Near your city is a forest of giant concrete spikes protruding from the earth. Nobody knows why they’re there, and everyone who goes into them comes back mysteriously and incurably ill. You and your team have been working your whole lives to unravel the mystery of these strange monoliths.

“You won’t get away with this, Villain. Superhero will stop you.” A rather brave civilian spat.

He smiled, sad and bitter. “No she won’t. She doesn’t even know I exist. Why would she? I’m just a small-time villain, and she’s got way more important things to do than stopping me. Still, one can always dream, right?”

“I can only officially be recognized as a superhero by defeating a supervillain, like you. Until then, I’m categorized as an illegal vigilante. That’s why cops chase me.”

“Wow, you really know how to sweep a girl off her feet.” Hero weakly smiled as Villain scooped her up in his arms. She broke into a coughing fit. Blood dribbled from her lips.

“Save your breath.”

“Sorry handsome, I can’t do that. You took my breath away.”

“Seriously?”

“Hey, I was in between that or ‘you left me breathless’ or 'you’re just too breathtaking’.”

“Finally! It’s been hours, but we’ve finally been dug out!”

“About time.” The villain muttered and pressed a sharp piece of debris against Hero’s neck.

“Are you kidding me? I thought we built a real connection back there.”

“Nothing personal, but I need a shield to keep the police from arresting me.”

“You’re the worst.”

“Yes I know.”

“Why do you hate me so much? I haven’t done anything to you!”

“No, you haven’t. But you will, very soon in the future.”

“I don’t want your help or protection or whatever this is. I’ve been helping the city for a long time before you were even a blip in my radar, and so far, I’ve done a really good job.”

“No, you’ve been lucky so far. And it’s only a matter of time before your luck runs out, Hero.”

“Is that a threat, Villain?”

“Wait, how will we find you again? It’s a big city!”

“Exactly. Big city, big crime. Don’t worry, it’s only a matter of time before we meet up again.”

“Hold up, have we met before?”

No, we most certainly have not.”

“Yeah, I’ve definitely seen you before.”

“No you haven’t! This is the first time you’ve ever seen me, and the last before I grind you into dust!”

*Snaps fingers* “It’s you! My old best bud! I remember how you’d always use that phrase back when we were kids.”

“Listen here, I am not your anything except eternal mortal enemy.”

“Yeah, I remember you’d always say that too. Good times.”

“Last time, you only managed to defeat me with the help of your team, and where are they now, hmm?”

“Down on the ground, everyone! This is a bank robbery! Hey you! Didn’t you hear what I said?”

“I did. I’m old, not deaf.”

“Why you-get down on the ground, right now! You have five seconds, old timer!”

“Well, I may be an old timer, but you’re a brat in a serious need of a time out.”

Bang! The gun fired, but suddenly, the robber froze in place like a statue. The bullet remained suspended in mid-air.

“I’m terribly sorry about this, Hero. Is there anything I can offer you other than freedom or a means to obtain freedom?” Henchman asked.

“How on Earth did you get past my state of the art security? Actually, you know what, I’m so sleepy I don’t even care right now.”

“You don’t have any superpowers!”

“No, I don’t. So what?”

“What do you mean ‘so what’? You’re in way over your head. When the other villains find out, they, unlike me, won’t hesitate to kill you.”

“They always want to kill me anyway, powers or no.”

“I won’t let that happen.”

“Oh yeah, what are you going to do? Follow me to all my fights to keep the other baddies from hurting me?”

“Yes.”

“…I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think I liked you more when you used to want to kill me.”
