In the past I’ve heard a number of people, particularly some outside of the Care Bears fandom, comment on how the the “A New Generation” part of the second Care Bears Movie doesn’t make sense.
Their argument has been that the because the movie is a prequel, it’s actually going back in time from the first movie or even the earlier versions of the Care Bears that had already come out. (I wont’ get into the plot discrepancies between the two movies right now).
Basically it’s saying that it’s not a NEW generation, since it’s the same generation of Bears/Cousins we had already seen. Instead it’s going back in time and showing them as cubs. So it’s not actually anything NEW.
While I agree that this argument makes sense, and that most likely the creators didn’t even bother thinking that through and just wanted to come up with a catchy title…..I’m going to try to come up with an argument for how “A New Generation” could make sense.
I think it’s mainly that the New Generation doesn’t make sense when you look at it from OUR perspective. If you’re saying that WE already know who the Bears are, then they aren’t new to US. (and some would argue that the audience is the only part that matters).
But….to the Bears themselves, when they’re cubs, they ARE a new generation.
Now, where this argument might fall apart is if you’re saying that they’re the FIRST generation, then it doesn’t make as much sense to call them NEW. I mean, I guess the first of anything is new, but usually we don’t think about it that way…usually we think about there being an old generation, and then a new one.
But….now we have to think about…who were the cubs’ parents?
This is where everything is murky. We are told that the Bears/Cousins are orphans, so it’s clear True Heart and Noble Heart are not their biological parents.
But….were their actual parents actual Care Bears/Cousins? Or were they random Bears/Cousins that have no caring powers?
On that same note, you can ask the same thing about True Heart and Noble Heart themselves….are they just a random Bear/Horse, or are they biological Care Bears/Cousins who just haven’t gotten their powers yet?
I tend to go with the latter becuase they have white tummies. To me, that makese it seem like they were always meant to have tummy symbols and powers.
So MAYBE….there was an entire generation (or many many generations) of Care Bears in the past. And…tragically, somehow they all got wiped out by some evil force (Dark Heart, No Heart, the Evil Spirit, or some other villain we don’t know about).
If that was the case, then this new set truly is the NEW Generation of Care Bears and Cousins. It kind of reminds me a little bit of the first Star Wars being called A New Hope. It was the original movie, but it was a new generation.
So it’s hard to say, but I think that’s an interesting way of looking at it.
