Life is easy to claim, to call one’s own, to say it’s understood when, really, only one life of countless can be experienced. Who can state that their life is representative of what life could be and not that of, say, a bumblebee or a saguaro cactus or a shield lichen or a Cambrian shellfish the size of a penny that propped itself up on calcareous stilts so that its filter-feeding tentacles could wave about freely above the dirty seafloor?
