Deborah Brown’s newest body of work, a series of small-scale still-lifes she started during quarantine, focuses on the domestic with its attributes of consumption, decoration and femininity; painted to look as if they were alive, Brown’s subjects are inviting but also strange. The viewer is brought into intimate proximity with these chosen objects and staged interaction, forced to confront their significance. Brown states: “The most successful works in this series simultaneously attract and confuse. That mystery is the source of their fascination.”
