There are two main kinds of vegetation on the avian homeplanet, black plants and blue plants. Blue plants are closer to what we think of as terrestrial plants on Earth, black plants are actually photosynthetic worms. They have trilateral symmetry, frond-like appendages, and a calcium carbonate tube that they will retract their limbs into when night falls or they are threatened. The tube may be underground in smaller species or young individuals, In larger individuals it’s usually a thick above-ground structure like a tree trunk.
The largest continent on the avian homeplanet is slightly smaller than Australia and is home to the biggest cultural group of flightless avians, the Hotsuuv. They propagate picture frame “orchids,” a kind of flowering shrub with complex, often landscape or symbol-like patterns on their upper petal/ovary structure. The colors and lines of the flower preserve well on the dried seed pod, and selective breeding to change the picture on the flower is common. Many Hotsuuv settlements have a distinct seal symbol, derived from the image on the local strain of picture frame flower.
