In Super Mario 64, a cork box that has been picked up by Mario and then set down will remain in place for 25 seconds, after which it will blink and then despawn. In addition, a cork box will also despawn if it touches the death plane below any floating course, like Whomp’s Fortress. In both cases, after despawning, the cork box will respawn at its initial location.

However, the code that runs the two despawn scenarios does not check whether one of them already applies before running the other. As a consequence, if a cork box both despawns due to its timer running out, and due to touching the death plane on the exact same frame, the code will run both scenarios and since both of them involve the cork box respawning afterwards, it will respawn twice. This can be seen in the footage where the already blinking cork box slides down the slope into the death plane.

This results in two cork boxes being placed at the same coordinates at the cork box’s initial position, as can be seen in the footage when Mario picks one of them up, revealing another one. This can be done indefinitely many times for an unlimited amount of cork boxes, each containing 3 coins, which allows an infinite number of coins to be collected.
