Headdress Depicting The Battle of the Arimaspi and the Gryphons, Bosporan Kingdom, 330-300 BC
This woman’s kalathos-shaped headdress was found in Stone Crypt No. 1 of the Bliznitsa Barrow near the Vyshestebliyevskaya Cossack Village on the Taman Peninsula (map), Russia.
The Arimaspi were a legendary one-eyed people of northern Scythia who lived in the foothills of the Riphean Mountains, variously identified with the Ural Mountains or the Carpathians. All tales of their struggles with the gold-guarding gryphons in the Hyperborean lands had their origin in a lost work called ArimaspeabyAristeas of Proconnesus.
