After being converted to an armed military transport ship, the Wilhelm Gustloff would be sunk while ferrying refugees from the east back to Germany after being torpedoed by Soviet submarine S-13 in the Baltic Sea in January 1945 with the loss of over 9,000 lives, the largest loss of life in a single ship sinking in history.
